Review of the Seneye automatic aquarium monitoring system - is it worth it?

  • In this video I show the Seneye, which is an automatic aquarium monitoring system that can measure your pH, ammonia, and temperature. It has added features you can purchase to measure light, but I don't discuss them in this video.
    The Seneye can send you an alert to your phone if there are any dramatic changes to your tanks parameters. In addition, you can monitor it from your phone when you are away.
    Overall, my opinion is that the Seneye is not worth the money for most people. It could be worthwhile if you have go away frequently and have someone who can tend to your tank if anything goes wrong. Additionally, if you are keeping sensitive livestock, corals or plants and want to monitor your parameters accurately and frequently, the Seneye is going to provide more convenient and automatic readings than a manual water test.
    Cons
    - The device itself is $175, then you need to replace the slides to get pH and ammonia readings, which sets you back ~$15-20 per month
    - It requires either a computer to plug into next to the fish tank, or you will need to buy an expensive connector for $300+
    Pros
    - I found the device to be accurate and work effectively
    - The app and website work well
    - You can be notified if anything goes wrong in your tank and have the potential to act on it

    I was thinking of buying one for my reeftank but have now decided against it considering the ongoing costs for pH. Thanks for the great info

    I love the technology. But it is inconvenient, impractical and very expensive...
    great video, BTW.. 😍😍

      I agree! The system they've created is cool, but the execution not so much 🤣 And thank you so much 😄

    Nice review, it looks a good concept. However lots of extra purchases needed etc. What PH do you keep your aquarium at?

    • @eurospage1
      @eurospage1 2 года назад

      Sorry meant to say what do you do to keep PH relatively high?

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  2 года назад +1

      Yes, it adds up a lot! I'm not sure the expense is worth the utility. I use a mix of the Texas holey rock and crushed coral spread throughout the sand and in the filters to keep it up. Then I also add an African Cichlid buffer to help maintain it. No matter what it always creeps back to the 8.2 mark so I always have to be careful with big water changes. I believe I've lost a couple of fish before from having too big of a swing in pH

    You can use a mini pc for around $100 to use in place of the Seneye server.

    I am questioning the accuracy of my seneye. It reads an ammonia level close to toxic, whereas the water tests I use show no ammonia. I even put 10 kg of brand new zeolite into the filtration system to see if it would drop the reading of the ammonia. It hasn't. I am wondering if you have compared the ammonia reading of your own seneye to other test methods?

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  Год назад

      I compared mine to the API ammonia test kit when I had it, and I always found the seneye to be accurate

      @@Kaityscichlids Personally I wouldn't use API ammonia tests. Thank you for replying, I do appreciate it. I was speaking to a few people who, like me, also found the seneye inaccurate for multiple readings, not just ammonia. The solution was to use a Hanna checker and then change the parameters manually on the seneye to match that of the Hanna checkers. This has to be repeated each time a slide is changed. With doing that you get a consistent reading that is 95 percent (or more) accurate. I am sure that seneye are aware that their device has a chance to be wrong, why else allow for manual calibrations. There's some videos of people testing just the PAR with a 200 percent over reading from the seneye as opposed to PAR dedicated devices

    What slides need replacing? Is it all of them or just ammonia?

    • @deathproofduck6897

      It's one slide that allows the device to monitor both pH and ammonia.

      @@Kaityscichlids About 10 years ago I had a 6 foot tank same as you full of lime stone rock and crushed coral substrate, With Mbuna ,Here in the UK we have some good shops / websites selling a large choice of both tank bred and WC F1 F2 etc ,I walked down stairs one morning to the sound of water flooding out of my tank ,it some how cracked and flooded my living room and that was the end of my Mbuna journey 😢🤣

    Do devices exist that can measure nitrites and nitrates?

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  2 года назад

      Not that I'm aware of, but it would be great if they did! It would make it a little bit more worthwhile

    • @zlamanit
      @zlamanit 2 года назад

      They do exist, but you either need to calibrate and frequently replace sensors or spend over £1000 just for one probe. So it makes no economical sense - it may be cheaper to pay somebody to do the maintenance.
