- "Pax Romana" or the Roman Peace, which the Romans achieved mostly by sending the Legions out under their Centurions to conquer and demand taxes from anyone who might potentially be in a position to maybe, at some point, disturb that peace.

You know Jingles hasnt played WoT for a long time when the Centurion fully upgraded is considered one of the best t8 meds
Correction on the 20mm cannon. It was only used on 5 prototype machines and was in an independent ball mount, not coaxial to the main gun. It was replaced by a machine gun in all production versions. A machine gun was more useful for shooting at infantry due to the additional ammunition carried and larger magazines, and the main gun was better for shooting at things like trucks and armoured cars.
The Polston cannon was a more simple design, and thus cheaper to produce, than the Oerlikon, having only 119 parts as opposed to 250. It maintained similar effectiveness and reliability to the Oerlikon. It was fed from a 30 round double stack magazine, or a 60 round drum magazine. It might have been single loaded during testing, but it would not have been intended to be used as such had the 20mm cannon concept been adopted beyond early the prototype stage.
its funny bc jingles has mentioned all this in a replay he featured like 7 years ago. although i think it was a WT replay of a centurion not WOT. i specifically remember him talking about the ball mount, and how he thought it was odd a ball mount would be used for range finding.
Later marks of the Centurion and the early versions of the Chieftain used a .50 spotting rifle and frequently won the Canada cup with that combination, so in practice it clearly worked better than Jingles seems to think!
Watching him taking apart that BZ was deeeeeply satisfying.
I'm surprised he stayed in that position given he was just doing no damage and kept getting eaten away...

Sorry Jingles. Still to this day nothing can even touch the ARL V39 stock grind. You are issued a tank that you may as well afk in because it even bounces off arty.. if it is even capable of hitting it at all. The TD lacks the view range to spot the end of its own gun barrel, the armor is just wet tissue paper soaked in shattered dreams and the thing is slower than a pig stuck in cured concrete.
Seeing a Centurion I show a BZ-176 who's boss can't get anymore satisfying. Heck, any tank that does that makes it worth watching.
I suppose that the 20mm spotter round concept was to conserve main gun ammo for shots that are absolutely going to hit.
In fact is to find the range quicker, if you don't hit, when the shell hits the ground you have another one ready to go
also, main guns kick up dirt and dust and give away your position, a coaxial gun can allow you to rapidly find the range and shoot your main gun only for a kill. there is a reason WW2 tank battles were often settled by who shot first, as they could find the range faster.
I'd think more that if it misses, you can then eyeball a correction and fire the main gun without needing to reload first.
the thing that I love telling people that they never seem to get easily is one simple fact
the Centurion IS a WW2 tank. 6 were built before the end of the war, though they didn't see much action. I believe this is something shared with the Pershing. There's a theory that they debated sending some to Russia before the Wars ended but didn't on account of military secrets. but regardless, this tank is a legend of the military world, taking part in conflicts EVEN TODAY. Israel has the Sho't tank, which is the Centurion, along with several derivation from the Hull (the Puma and Magmachon for instance).
just makes me think that all the time we were faffing around with Cromwell and Comet (not bad tanks mind, but Cromwell when it finally came along 4 months late was already outdated) we could've been working on Centurion.....c'est la vie I suppose
Most people argue about wether or not you can call it a WW2 era tank if it never fought in those battles/got past the prototype stage/went into full production during the war. It's just up to how you personally view the definition of WW2 tank.
They did not see any action in WWII. They arrived in Europe in June 1945, after the war ended.
The same is true for the IS-3.

@@emberfist8347 no that's not true - the goblin wasn't submitted until march 1945, and the first prototypes weren't built until 1947. The Centurion physically existed in prototype form by the end of the war
Actually Jingles the 20mm is a Polson gun on an independent mount, it’s not a ranging weapon it’s supposed to be used against soft targets and aircraft

Watched his videos all the way back in 2013. Stopped playing WoT, but coming back and seeing him still at it in that same distinct flavor is a real good feeling.

Cromwell, Comet - I'm doing perfectly fine.
The second I got to Centurions, I started doing horrible. Even full upgrades.
Now, admittedly, I got my Centurions before the buffs. And honestly, Centurion 1 was quite horrible - the turret these days is pretty solid with with 235mm in weakest point and over 250 in most other frontal areas. But back in the day... It was basically 152mm, which is nothing, and couple of virtually impenetrable, but thin bars or mantlet armour.
On top of that, the thing used to do only 40km/h. It was agile, but slow speed simply did not work where there were plenty of heavies capable of keeping up with you.
And it was exactly the same story for Centurion 7/1. These things were objectively not very good.
Now it got better speed, better turret armour and better gun handling. DPM is still abysmal, but it is still a substantial improvement.
Also... I'm pretty sure Centurions did not have hull mounted machine guns.
I >loved< the cromwell, comet was kinda okay but grew to hate it more and more due to the fact you basically had to fire gold to get anything done unless you were top tier, and to stick with that gun vs almost exclusively tier 10 where not even firing gold saves that gun just killed it for me, that's where I abandoned the line.

Stock tanks only able to use high explosive to do any damage is one of the reasons HE nerf was so bad. It was a nerf to newer players/progessive players. Used to be if you struggled with a tank at least you where able to do some damage vs no damage.

Both the 20 pdr (from Centurion Mk 5 onward) and L7 105mm used a .50 cal ranging gun in addition to a coaxially mounted BESA (later Browning 30 cal) machine-gun. As someone commented earlier, this was intended to enable a first-round hit with the main armament; azimuth isn't usually the problem when aiming a tank gun, range is. Indeed these .50 ranging guns were still in use with the L1 120mm gun fitted to Chieftain Mk5 when I first served on them in July 1978, being replaced by Barr & Stroud laser range-finders a few months later. The ranging gun fired a three-round burst of tracer ammunition which was good out to 2600 yds, when the tracer burnt out. Hits beyond that were theoretically visible because of the 'splash' on the target caused by the explosive tip to the round. Can't say that I ever saw it, either on the ranges at Hohne or at BATUS, Canada.

You are responsible for getting me exited about the centurion line back in the day as i started to play world of tanks. I loved the cromwell, uterly hated the comet and almost quit playing because of the centurion. Well its not quite the same tank as it was then ( a turret easily penned by 200mm of pen anywhere other than on the mantlet). Its is still a huge target and the armor profile is still not very good. Also tanks that you meet often shoot for 300/400 damage so they will always out trade you. I would not recomend centurion line for any new player. Its a hard tank to play and often you would do better in any other tank. As an example i wnt from centurions to t29 and it was a night and day swich. It makes a big difference to have actual armor and almost 100 points more damage per shot at a lower tier.
My experience in the Brit mediums was basically the same ^^ I already had all the US tanks by the time the brits came out, but I can certainly understand the sentiment.
The Centurion "medium" tank. All 50 plus tons of it. That thing beside it in the early game is a Tiger. That's how big it is. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I love the Cent 7/1, thing is better than the AX by a large margin. The 105 has lower DPM but it basically papers any tank it will see, cause the pen is crazy high with standard rounds.
Watching these replays makes me want to get back into WoT, jingles.

Time for an “Actually Jingles” moment, the Centurion was never fitted with a hull mounted machine gun, the co-ax was all it carried apart from whatever machine gun the commander had in front of his hatch.

I got to ask, is their even a POINT to having HE shells in WOTanks anymore? From what iv heard its been nerfed to shit.
Ironicly I recall War Thunder, though various patches actually made HE shells worth using. Provided you can aim well and understand how The shells work that particular patch. (Been a while, i think they introduces Overpressure a few patches back.)
They nerfed the effects HE has against spaced armor. For the rest, nothing changed.
Which means that if you want to do small amounts of damaged against normal armor plating, you can still do that.
What you can’t do is get a Type 5/BZ-176/Caliban/FV183 and just fire anywhere random and splash for 300-700 damage.
It hasn’t changed that massively it just requires a bit more brain usage to be effective.
It depends on what you want to use those shells for. If you want to chip away at heavy tanks because you can't pen them then: No. Thats not useful anymore, don't do that.
If you want to pen lightly armored targets, kill enemies on very low HP or use it to decap the base, then: Yes. HE is still as good in those situations as it used to be.
A tank with like 40 rounds of ammo should take 2-3 HE shells for those circumstances - maybe 5-8 or so if you get those nice 105mm or 120mm HESH with 105mm or 120mm penetration.
The only thing about HE that got nerfed is the damage it does when it does not penetrate. That made derp guns pretty aweful of course since they quite often rely on spash damage of non-penetrating shells. So basically try to penetrate your AP/APCR/HEAT shells unless you can *reliably penetrate* your HE, or the very few points of HE splash damage is enough to do the job.
For those interested:
HE has 2 cases:
1) Penetration. It does the listed damage +-25% RNG.
2) Non-Penetration.
Damage = 0.5 x nominalDamage x (1 - ImpactDistance/SplashRadius) - 1.1 x nominalArmorThickness x SpallLinerMultiplier
Looks scary, is easy to understand.
- You take your listed damage. Lets say 480.
- You apply RNG. So lets say you get an above average damage roll of exactly 500. Thats "nominalDamage".
- You half it. 250 remains.
- The damage is reduced by the distance from impact (only for arty shells). If you hit something thats half your splash radius away you only get half the damage and so on... lets say it is a direct hit, so the distance is 0. The bracket equals 1 then, so nothing changes.
- You subtract the armor thicknes of the impact point with some multipliers. Lets say the enemy does not have a spall liner equiped and you hit a 100mm plate (angle of impact is irrelevant). Thats another 1.1x100 = 110 damage subtracted.
You therefor deal 250-110=140 damage.
The splash radius is only relevant for arty since you can't damage tanks with regular HE anymore if you don't hit them directly. Back then the shell explosion would "search" for the point in its splash radius where it would deal the most damage, e.g. it you hit the turret front you would still deal a significant amount of damage since the lightly armored engine deck was right below it. Now it does not do that anymore. Thats the nerf you mentioned. It only taked into account the actual point of impact. There is a 1mm plate 5cm away from the explosion? HE does not care anymore, you hit the 250mm gun mantled. Back then you could shoot the turret front of hulldown heavies and the explosion would splash into the engine deck to deal damage. Now you only hit the turret front and deal more or less nothing...

@@NavGTIThat is probably a very sensible change. Those tanks, the Type-5 in particular, were insanely overpowered with its premium HE.
A range firing MG is better as you aren't wasting limited quantities of main armament trying to determine range. Also certain that the Centurion never had a hull MG (5:05), but its Jingles.

If I remember correctly before the changes on both Caernarvon and the Centurion gun didn't they actually share the same gun ? Because I remember the stock Caernarvon had a Black Prince turret

When I played the Centurion was a love/hate tank for me, the 20 pounder made the tank but the armour was terrible beyond the turret; the worst part of it though? The ammo cost, it was one of the worst per shot of any tank at any tier.

I quit the british heavy line at the Centurion I, as you said it was pretty bad, and having loved the Churchills and the Black Prince, the Centurion was one tank too far.

Was the 20mm tracer gun thing meant/envisioned to help reduce the cost of ammo used/wasted by some penny-pinching officer(s)?
It was something that pretty much every tank had at the time. Co-Axial guns are designed with the purpose of making your first shot landed on target as that is what you really need to do. Miss and you are likely dead. In the years before laser rangefinders a coaxial weapon is your best bet. They did the same thing with recoilless rifles putting .50 cal tracers on the rifle to mark the path with a tracer.

Everything that was listed as being bad when this tank is stock is also true about the stock mk7 cent at tier 9, except it’s even slower and has worse pen. The mk7 cent it both the worst and best tank in the game just like the mk1

The Pershing is much worse; it's top turret has more weak spots than the Centurion I's best turret.
I have a Centurion 1, 5/1, 7, Strv81, FV4202 and the damn AX, and over years of playing, NONE OF EM, not a single time performed that well accuracy wise on a single game, what kind of rng bullshit is that, and iirc, i have below .29 on all of em, with roughly the same 7 skills crew. Wtf

Power creep is real. The Pen values you talk about arent bad, but nothing to write home about anymore. Certainly the Prem. ammo isnt „tier 10 medium level“….
I think most T9 Meds have 250pen … Just thought its funny, how you think this game is playable with 220mm of Pen and not loading the gold all the time 😅

I've been away from the game for a while and I'm not a big fan of them making the sound of the 20 pounder the same as a 76mm gun even though the 20 pounder is an 84mm
