Mustaine said 'Set the world afire' was the first song he wrote after being fired from Metallica... it was originally titled 'Megadeth'. But he wasn't happy w/ the initial version, so he rewrote it multiple times and finally made it onto Megadeth's 3rd album...
'Into the lungs of hell' had a keyboard intro that wasn't prominent on the original version... on the remixed version, u can hear it like a cinematic entry.
The 3rd album was recorded w/ guitarist Jeff Young and drummer Chuck Behler... both were fired by 1989... Mustaine & Ellefson were jacked out of their mind on alcohol & drugs when this record wss made...but it sold better than 'Peace sells'🤘🤘

I read somewhere Dave wrote it in one sitting after hearing about Cliff's passing, bombed out on H. Keep going man, you should hear this stuff live, unreal. Did anybody see him on Celebrity Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? First person to win the fastest question, so he was the first to play. Won the million for his charity of choice and split. The rest of the celebrities did not win the million, even though they all stuck around and helped each other by shouting out what they thought were the correct answers from the peanut gallery. I am in the minority but I like this album better than Peace Sells on the strength of Into the Lungs of Hell, Set the World Afire, Hook in Mouth, In my Darkest Hour, and Liar. Those are by far the strongest songs on the album and the leftover 3 songs are a mixed bag. All those songs aren't directed at Metallica but he was able to channel his anger at Metalllica and create some really good music. The guy who replaced Chris Poland is named Jeff Young, and he plays that big solo at the end of the song. Young is not as talented as Poland, but he is a virtuoso, too. The opening of Set The World Afire are a sample from The Inkspots - I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire from 1941. The song was originally written in 1938 by Bennie Benjamin, Eddie Durham, Sol Marcus and Eddie Seiler. It was first recorded by Harlan Leonard And His Rockets three years later. The Inkspots version reached number 4 on the US pop chart. Got very popular after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. The song was also used in Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76

I love that this album reminds me of the Fallout Games even though this album predated them by several years. It also perfectly encapsulates what Megadeth is and embraces their snarky, cocky attitude (using a 50s crooner about the same subject matter before literally dropping a bomb on it to show that the oldies are dead, Megadeth is where the kids are at!) But it definitely gives an impression of nuclear war and embraces the paranoia of the cold war which was rampant in the late 80s and early 90s. Thanks for checking it out!!
I love all of Megadeth's albums but this one is about a B tier for me. I prefer the tightness and melody of albums such as Endgame and Countdown rather than the overt punk influence of this album. But this one sounds unlike any other album I've heard. The gritty slightly off key lo-fi production Gives So Far So Good So What an atmosphere like nothing else.

Recording technology improved a lot in the 90's, but I'd argue that the murky production values of a lot of lower budget 80's metal enhanced the atmosphere.

YES!!! I’m so glad there’s a new Megadeth reaction!!! You should react to the song “When”. NOBODY has reacted to that song on RUclips EVER!!! I know it’s not on So Far So Good So What, but it is an AMAZING song.
If you’re looking for another SFSGSW song, then I HIGHLY recommened 502. SEVERLY underrated song!!!

Megadeth was and is still just awesome! Dave has amazing talent. That's why he still makes music like no one else now a days. New edge but still the old feel. Great lyrics. Riffs to make your head headbang. Try Ashes in your Mouth.

Hook in Mouth is super underrated and one of my favorites also! This album in general in fact is underrated! So many great tracks!!
Set the World Afire was originally titled Megadeth and Mustaine started writing it on the bus ride home from being fired by Metallica, I believe.
    Great reaction!!
Chris Poland wasn't on this album, it was Jeff Young, not to nitpick lol. 🤙🏻🤘🏻

That last solo by Jeff Young on set the world afire is simply wicked. Gives me chills everytime i listen to it. I have yet to hear any other megadeth guitarist give it justice. They all do a descent job but lack that substance Jeff Young puts on it.

Love those two tracks. The instrumental has very much an orchestral feel given the arrangement. If I'm not mistaken, this was Dave's response to Metallica's Master of Puppets release and was much anticipated. Not one weak song on this release.
