Love how you stop, and look at your surroundings. So often we focus on getting to our destination, we forget to do that. I deal with chronic nerve pain in my legs, so I have no choice but to stop, and sit a few minutes now and then. It forces me to stop and take in the surroundings. Some might see it as a negative thing....I think it's a blessing in a way.

Ruth, I'd recommend you search out a 1945 film 'I Know where I'm Going'

The reasons for there being no woodland stem indirectly from the Act of Union. 1. The huge Caledonian Forest was gradually cut down to provide timber for the wooden warships of the growing 'British" navy, not just timber for the actual frames, decks and planking but also for the masts and spars, etc. The trees were cut and floated down rivers to the coast. And of course the British navy was huge. 2. Following the Jacobite risings we had the clearings. The indigenous people and their ragged cattle were cleared from the land to make way for sheep (which eat the tops out of young saplings, and for sporting estates for the new rich (industrial revolution) - they paid gamekeepers to annually carry out planned burnings of the hills and moors to provide new growth heather for grouse to feed on.

andyallan2909 -- that is all very true. Also, it is said that all the trees in Fife were cut down to build the Great Michael for James IV's navy. It was the largest warship of its day, and put the fear of god into the English. Incidentally, much of the Black Forest was cut down and floated down the Rhine to build ships for the Dutch East India Company, Holland being somewhat deficient in the forestry department. The Germans had the good sense to replant it.

A very sad history and it's been repeated in many places. The people had lived on that land God knows how long. Seeing it taken over and robbed. No trees left and who knows what wildlife was killed out. I grew up in forest land and would have hated seeing it destroyed.
Aggressive and greedy people always get their way in this world. I'm sure the Spanish were also robbing and clearing huge lands to build their armada.
I wish they had done something to protect some of the lands, forest, and people.

Ruth, I can imagine the Coryvreckan Whirlpool getting pretty fierce, if tides are right! In your rundown of world's biggest whirlpools, I thought you were going to mention that one monster off the coast of Japan --- forget exactly where it is right now, but Kuga-san of Kuga's Travels did a great piece on it, and even very powerful boats had a great deal of trouble getting into an out of it!

Ah yes! I wonder what size the one in Japan is, I must look it up. I have find the trip in it too. The Naruto Whirlpools.

Thank you so much for this episode. My eldest son worked on Jura for one of the owners there. He said it was one if not the most beautiful place he had worked. I had to make do with his photos and stories, you managed to bring it alive. As usual a fantastic episode.

I took a similar, albeit shorter, trip with Islay Sea Adventures in May during Feis Ile 2024, and it was magical. Sipping Islay whisky while exploring the beauty of Islay's and Jura's coasts was amazing. Thank you, Ruth.

Oh wow! Did they leave Scotland for North Carolina? I read a plaque at the beach there last year about how they loaded the boats which left for North Carolina. I suggest you to watch the other video I made about Jura so you can see the beach, maybe that’s the exact point your ancestors left from!

Lovely video, Ruth, thanks. We went to Jura twice on a trip to Islay last year but didn’t get as far as the whirlpools - did have our 5 year old son with us so not sure that would have been wise. Loved Jura and did say the tide between Islay and Jura is fierce - not sure I have seen anything like it and it was a comparatively calm day when we went over - I wouldn’t imagine it would be an area for an inexperienced sailor! Loved this video and LOVE Jura - definitely a place to go back too - stunning wilderness and just literally magical

Yes, the whole island should be covered with trees, maybe a little stunted and windblown in places, but growing nevertheless. Less sheep and more trees. Nakd bars are excellent and vegan. '1984' is one of the best books ever written and can be applied to what's happening today... psychologically I think we're all in the whirlpools of Corryvreckan. Glad you enjoyed the trip and had great weather.
