Ruth, I'd recommend you search out a 1945 film 'I Know where I'm Going' A love story, it features a small boat battling the Corryvreckan whirlpool as a key part of the plot. The film itself is steeped in folklore and captures the etheral, almost mystical sense of the Scottish Isles. Great video. Thank you.
Love that film. The journey on the sleeper train takes me to memories when l travelled to stay with my granny in the Highlands every school holiday. Though did go by car sometimes. ❤

Once sailed through Corryvreckan. Our speed increased from 14 knots to 22 knots whilst caught in the tidal flow. Then going against the flow it decreased to just 11.
Just seen your vlog and I can confirm that there is much fun to be had in the Corryvrecken Races! I went in there with a 21 foot rib and a 150 horse power engine. When I went it was on a spring tide, the whirlpools roar! There were plenty of dolphins in the water. Be careful and watchout for standing waves. We measured the current at 8.5 knots! The reasons for there being no woodland stem indirectly from the Act of Union. 1. And of course the British navy was huge. 2. Following the Jacobite risings we had the clearings. The indigenous people and their ragged cattle were cleared from the land to make way for sheep (which eat the tops out of young saplings, and for sporting estates for the new rich (industrial revolution) - they paid gamekeepers to annually carry out planned burnings of the hills and moors to provide new growth heather for grouse to feed on.
andyallan2909 -- that is all very true. Also, it is said that all the trees in Fife were cut down to build the Great Michael for James IV's navy. It was the largest warship of its day, and put the fear of god into the English. Incidentally, much of the Black Forest was cut down and floated down the Rhine to build ships for the Dutch East India Company, Holland being somewhat deficient in the forestry department. The Germans had the good sense to replant it.

Yes, the whole island should be covered with trees, maybe a little stunted and windblown in places, but growing nevertheless. Less sheep and more trees. Nakd bars are excellent and vegan. Lovely video, Ruth, thanks. We went to Jura twice on a trip to Islay last year but didn’t get as far as the whirlpools - did have our 5 year old son with us so not sure that would have been wise. Loved Jura and did say the tide between Islay and Jura is fierce - not sure I have seen anything like it and it was a comparatively calm day when we went over - I wouldn’t imagine it would be an area for an inexperienced sailor! Loved this video and LOVE Jura - definitely a place to go back too - stunning wilderness and just literally magical

im from strangford lough, the entrance of which is the strongest tidal current in europe youve to navigate a series of whirlpools known as the routen wheels, nice video 👍👍
Wow. !!!!! As someone who isn't as young as she was 😂 I am no longer able to hike or climb like I used to in The Highlands and on the islands. We still travel way up north because we love it, but are only able to stroll. Therefore I love watching your videos, dreaming that I am you.!!!! This particular one was marvellous.
Jura is a very special place!
Saw elsewhere on YT recently that Scotland is a focus of the tidal power experimenters, due to its many strong currents
Interesting!
