I went to Scotland’s wild island. The Isle of Jura is a remote gem in Scotland's Southern Hebrides. Situated on the west coast near Islay, it's the eighth-largest island in Scotland, yet it's sparsely inhabited. Around 200 people share this untamed space with a staggering population of 6000 deer, creating a unique blend of untouched nature and wildlife.
The Isle of Jura is known for a few key things: the Jura whisky distillery, deer stalking, trout fishing, and, of course, its stunning landscapes. Up north, you'll find the treacherous coryvrekkan whirlpools and Barnhill, the former residence of George Orwell where he penned "1984."
In this video, I take you along on my journey to the Isle of Jura. Together with my campervan Ernie, we explore this rugged island, giving you a glimpse of its wild beauty and simple charm.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
Interesting to see an outside perspective of Jura. I am one of the people who runs tea on the beach, glad you enjoyed the chocolate cake! That's my speciality.
Edit: oh, I remember meeting you on the road to Barnhill now, what a surprise to stumble upon this!
I remember meeting you on the walk. Your chocolate cake was SO good!
@KingJellyfishII your enterprise is very fondly remembered by us on one of our many summer holidays to Islay and Jura -absolutely perfect tea and cake seated with the stags grazing around us, whilst overlooking the sun-kissed Inverlussa beach. Blissful! greetings from Grampian 🫖🍰👍🏻🖐🏻
@@freeforester1717 Glad you enjoyed it!
Hopefully I’ll have some of your yummy cake at tea on the beach.I’ll be staying on Jura this June 2024
@@viktorialangton5942 Hope you have a good time in jura! Unfortunately the horse box which we usually run tea on the beach from is currently unsafe, and so I don't know if we'll be able to run it this year. We may be temporarily relocating to the distillery at lussa gin, though.
As a big Orwell fan, I'm grateful to Ms. Aisling for taking her viewers to the author's writing refuge for a look.
I'm happy to hear that and glad you enjoyed it!
George and family had a scary day boating in a weir from the Corryvreckan Whirlpool. He, son, niece and nephew were rescued by a lobster fisherman passing. Search for the more details. We went on the ferry from Stranraer over N. Eire and so on. Hello from west coast Canada!
love the videos, think this may be the 1 and only channel i dont skip the sponsored segment. ENjoying all your whisky videos, cheers from Inverness!
Glad you like them, really appreciate you watching! Thanks!
Thanks for this introduction to an island I did not know existed in Scotland. Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Paps of Jura are just impressive !
In 1972 I spent a week on Jura specifically to walk the Paps, at the time there were thousands of adders everywhere went. We were allowed to pitch our tents in the new graveyard at Kells which is a tiny settlement about a mile north of the pub. Sadly the pub was owned by a cockney woman who adhered to the then strict licensing laws in Scotland which meant pubs shut at 10 o’clock. A local was enterprising enough to give us a lift in his van up the north where we visited the Corryvrechan whirlpool but it was so foggy you couldn’t see anything but there were what’s called raised beaches and other interesting geological things to explore. Curiously the distillery was closed and had been for some time, I believe it reopened a few years later. Love the wee travelogue.
Thanks for sharing about your trip there Neil, what great memories!
She sounds a real pain in the neck, a jobsworth.
Thousands? That seems like a bit much, we barely see any south of tarbert

Loved Jura, been twice on our bikes. The second time a foot passenger was £1 and bikes free, the ferry sailed for our £2 fares. Camped at the Jura Hotel and then cycled to Tea on the Beach and had two rounds of superb tea and cake each sheltering from a storm in the horsebox. Past Lussa Gin (closed that day) and on to the end of the road. Also had the feeling of being the only medieval people on earth when met the cattle grazing the beach.
I've been quite happy sitting in the comfort of my home, discovering and sometimes revisiting parts of Scotland, my favourite place on Earth, through your brilliant videos. I love Scotland's history, culture, the people but not so much the cold, rain, wind and midges in my older years... However, this gem of a video now makes me want to go back again and stay in Barnhill Farmhouse. I've been a great fan of George Orwell ever since I read Animal Farm and then 1984. Thank you so much.
Thanks so much, really glad you're enjoying the videos!
Outstanding video, thank you.😊
Thankyou Ruth for your videos regards Mike
I've always wanted to see George Orwell's house. Thanks.
Beautiful baps!
another nice video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello Ruth, I have just subscribed. In fact I am following you in France on your travels. I live there. Today I have taken a step back to an older video of yours. Lovely Jura. Shame about the midges in Scotland, a well know fact. Be careful with ticks you can get Lime disease from a bite.
Thanks for subscribing!
Great video Ruth! I really enjoyed all the historical information you talked about. Love the stories of George Orwell. Such beautiful island! Thanks for such a wonderful tour!❤
Thanks so much!
Great video Ruth! I love the drone shots of the landscape and the wonderful wildlife segments with the deer. The video shot from Ernie as you drive down the narrow roads is also wonderful to watch.
Thank you for watching David, I'm happy to har you like the drone shots and driving videos!

Dry interesting video. Thanks for taking me along!
Ticks and deer, always together, deer are a main carrier of ticks.
Thanks for taking us with you Ruth. Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Ruth, love the isolation and views of the islands. Quite envious!
Thanks!
Hey Ruth, a lovely video, and island. Thanks for bringing us along !

Thank You for a showing of Jura! Incredible place.

Stumbled on your channel and so pleased I did. A great introduction to Jura, it’s customs and wildlife. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Stuart!
Looks so beautiful. The scenery is really brought to life by the wonderful photography.
Thank you Mark!
It looks amazing! I'll be visiting Islay and Jura in March and found both your videos about those islands helpful and interesting to watch :) your channel is awesome!
Thank you so much for your kind words! ❤
Cool video. Watching the auto-generated CC subtitles wrestle with her Scots burr was also quite amusing..
Oh no haha!

Beautiful video, beautiful Scotland
It really is!
I remember reading Orwell's "1984" as part of an English class assignment my sophmore year [USA grade 10] in high school [1965]. What a TOTAL treat to see the house that novel was written in! I just discovered your YT channel Ms. Aisling and I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos! Thank you for sharing your journey. Be well - many blessings! Cheers...
Thank you Ross!
Amazing video, informative, and with your lovely commentary, a great Sunday viewing ❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you Ruth.
Just amazing.
In response to your question yes i would live there in Barnhill & on Jura.
Your channel is an absolute must for van lifers & Scottish travel information.😊
Thanks Sean! Maybe you’d write the next world famous novel 🙂
Excellent video production as always. Top job.
I appreciate that!
Hi Ruth, yes love your videos, and keep them coming, I was born in Scotland, Buckie was as far north as I visited, moved to Canada when I was 31 yrs old, now on Vancouver Island.
Was on the island a few weeks back, beautiful place. The lussa gin is by far the best I’ve ever had! Unfortunately I’ve just finished the bottle…now I realise I should have bought two .
Outstanding! Such a beautiful Island with so many interesting & fascinating things to see & experience! Including the majestic deer, the breathtaking scenery, the wee tea hut, George Orwell's holiday Cottage & much more! It is so interesting to hear about the Island & the sea & all the details you have shared here! It really is fascinating to see these wonderful remote, wild, places that most folks do not even hear about, let alone, get to see or visit. Thank you for sharing this delightful experience!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video!
@@ruthaisling My pleasure I'm sure!
Thank you for your videos! It is a great that you bring rural Scotland to people in rural West Texas!!
Thanks for watching all the way from rural Texas, I'm very curious what it's like there!
@@ruthaisling We are in the Panhandle of Texas where it is mainly flat farmland but we have the best sunrises and sunsets imaginable! It is a great place but Scotland is definitely on my bucket list! Continue your videos and adventures on life in Scotland!
Thanks Ruth great video. Please keep the great work going.
Thanks for watching!
Another place to put on my bucket list, especially the distillery... thank you xx
Another really interesting video. I've read all Orwell's works over the years so a real bonus to see his house on Jura. Great work Ruth.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I need to start reading some of his books now! Which is your favourite?
@@ruthaisling Animal Farm is a classic and easy to read and, despite its serious purpose, amusing at times. My favourite quote is "Two legs bad, four legs good" - (might be the other round to be fair!)
Lovely to see you enjoying the Islands of Scotland i was born at Bunnabhabhain in Islay in 1960 looking onto the paps of Jura every day i can shut my eyes and can see them and have wonderful childhood memories and can also remember the deer swimming from Jura to Islay
What a lovely place to grow up! I didn’t realise deer could swim let alone that far, wow!
Another excellent blog Ruth. Jura is easily my favourite. We did hike to the end of the path and we were rewarded with an awesome show from the whirlpools. It's a tough old hike at the end, very wet and not well defined - it certainly tests your map skills 😁
Where to next I wonder .. 👍
Amazing, that's great to hear you made it to the end, how much longer time wise did it take you to hike after Barnhill?
Glad I came across your channel. Entertaining and informative videos with high quality footage throughout, kudos from Norway!
Thank you so much, I'd love to visit Norway sometime!
Another great video Ruth.
Glad you enjoyed it
You take us to the most beautiful places! Yes, I could live there. New subscriber here, and I'm absolutely loving every video! Have a lovely, beautiful adventures kind of week.

Famtastic energy another great vid ruth
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, how have I just found this? I spent my childhood hols in this neck o’ the woods and this evokes so many memories ❤ great vid 👍

Love your introduction to Jura ... " ... where human influence takes a back seat to the rhymes of the land ..." 🤍

Beautiful scenery outstanding filming. What a wonderful place to go and immerse yourself with mother nature.❤
It really is a beautiful place!
Was there, cycling ,a few years ago, definitely something other worldly about the place.
Lovely place to cycle!
Midges, adders, and ticks - ick!!
Go in Spring or autumn to avoid the first one, also ticks and adders are around throughout the UK but people don't usually see them, and with ticks, just keep your legs covered when walking past undergrowth and check yourself in the evening.
Another great video Ruth, I certainly would love to visit this island as it looks so nice.
You should..It is very special!
Jura whisky has been my favorite ever since visiting Wales. Definitely a bucket list destination. Thank you for finding the Jura distillery.
You need to go there!
I could 100% live at that "cabin". Thanks for sharing, Ruth!
Nice one Lass.
😊, absolutely smashing, Thankyou Ruth ❤
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hello 😉 brilliant Jura and it's paps are worth a look. 😁!!.. As for the deer we'll they can make a racket when there in the mood, 😅 George Orwells, gaff looks amazing and could easily live there while i write.. Inspirational but I agree you would need company and a wee dug called scampi🐶.. Plus music, imagine no one to bother you... Would be an interesting Friday nite with some Jura or gin or both 🤣.. Anyhoo thanks again plus you would make a great midgy destroyer... X Rob 👏👏👏👏🍻
Another great video.
I live in North Northumberland at Cornhill on Tweed.
I go walking in the Cheviot Hills.
It's Dodge the Adders up there in the summer if your wanting to see any😂😂
Oh yikes 😳
Ruth, you're the best!
Thanks! 😂

Please visit again soon
You are so great. Thanks for sharing.

I'm just glad that you are doing fine in Scotland. Hope to see your Vlog more! がんばってね!

Sounds like those bog walkers needed to invest in waterproof socks. They are not cheap but they are an absolute revelation! 😂
Just discovered your channel and have really enjoyed these videos of Islay and Jura. Thanks for sharing. From Cape Town, South Africa . 🇿🇦
Thank you very much for watching all the way from South Africa!
The west coast of the north half of Jura is stunning, raised beaches, caves. arches , waterfalls. Hard walking but well worth it.
A reason to go back!

Great video. Jura is now on my bucket list. Best wishes from Michigan, USA.
You definitely need to visit!

Absolutely Beautiful!
Nice, thanks!
cant believe ive just stumbled across this video, just started planning my trip to jura, thank you so much for this
That's great, I hope you have an amazing time there!
Hi Ruth, wow, what a tour of Jura, a real wilderness. I liked the addition of the 198 to the 4 miles on the sign. A trucker friend of mine stopped for a toilet break in the middle of nowhere when he went to the side of the truck to "go" on the grass there were a couple of adders basking on the grass. The fuel is very reasonable for somewhere so far from civilisation. looking forward to the next episode.
Haha yes the 198 edition was funny! Your friend must have got such a fright!
What a clever idea ... Tea on the Beach! 🫖🍰🐚
It's amazing!
@ruthaisling I also saw the honesty box idea in New Zealand for vegetables. Sadly, in South Africa, it would be stolen! lol

Thank you for your lovely comment! Appreciate it
Adders, ticks and three paps. What a place, what a woman x
Thank you for taking us to Jura, Ruth. I've often seen The Paps on videos from other islands and wondered what Jura was like. So beautiful, but I know from living in Canada 🇨🇦: where there are deer, there will be ticks. Here on the Pacific coast of course we also know that where there are deer, there will be cougar! That's something you don't have to watch out for in Scotland! Just adders and midges, I guess.
Thanks for watching! Wow, I’ve never seen a cougar before, do they attack?
Yes, come to canada i take thee to rge north see polar bear, grizzly moose@ruthaisling
Loving it stunning 🎉🎉🎉
Great video. I live in the Ashdown Forest in Sussex. We have adders - we are mainly heathland. so we have lizards, adders, slow worms and grass snakes and lots of fallow deer.
Oh wow lizards! I never knew there were lizards in the UK!
お久しぶりです。お元気で何よりです。
Ruth, thanks for the nice report. The closer you get to the north, the clearer the air becomes, but it seems to be a cold area, so alcohol to warm you up is essential. Photo prints are nostalgic, and now most of the photos are gone, but the atmosphere is nice. It is rich in endemic animals, plants and insects, and has a rich sense of life unlike the quiet scenery. The densely packed islands resemble Japan's Goto Islands(五島列島).
Yes so much fresh air, it was amazing! I never made it to the Goto Islands, I would love to spend some more time in Kyushu someday!
There’s a place in Sweden called Djurö, it translates to animal island (djur=animal, ö=island). The Swedish word djur also comes from the old norse word for deer. The pronunciation for Djurö and Jura actually sound kinda similar, definitely related.
Mycket bra 👍
Thanks for sharing!
@@ruthaisling You're AMAZING
@@ruthaisling Of course, thanks for making such nice videos!

That sounds amazing Chris! Thanks for watching!
@@ruthaisling look forward to more great videos, greeting from the Netherlands 👍
You have made the Isle of Jura a must see adventure for me as I was intrigued that George Orwell wrote 1984 here, in this remote house in the middle of nowhere . You asked, could any of your follower’s live here ?” I would find it FAR too remote and FAR too lonely as I am very gregarious . Although I live alone , I live within walking distance of several friends , AND I have all sorts of bakeries , cafes and grocery stores within walking distance in my village of Dundas. I love that this isle has a distillery ….the Jura Distillery ….and that you found a lovely place to buy treats on the honour system . You have such a gift of drawing your viewers into your journey , as if we are walking along with you . Warmest regards , Mary 🇨🇦
Thanks Mary, where you live sounds really nice!
Nice papa ruth
Hi Ruth What a fabulous video with fantastic drone footage. As a very long exiled West Coast Scot I did not realise the midge would be around so early in the morning. |n my day the did not appear until the early evening! Jura is quite stunning to say the least and the only bit of Jura I have encountered is having a wee dram of Jura supplied in an attractive tin case. I look forward to your further videos. Kind regards Crawford
Thanks Crawford, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I was surprised also with the midges appearing in the morning!
Late on seeing this post. A fascinating trip to a place that is truly 'out of the way'. Your enjoyable narrative is quite informative. Finding tea and cakes along the way is a treat. I'm with you in choosing a piece of the chocolate cake. Yum. Thanks for this post. I'm a new subscriber. I've got some catching up to do.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for subscribing!
If you are scared of ticks, then I recommend that you avoid walking through ferns or long grass in the summer time. This is where they tend to hang out, as they can easily attach onto a passing deer (or you) when brushed against. A pair of wellington style boots can help keep them off and will also help with walking through boggy terrain. They are small, but you can easily see them. You are unlikely to get a disease if you remove them within an hour of their attachment. Be sure to disinfect the wound afterwards.
Nice video, thank you Ruth. I love Jura and have been there a few times, but never by ferry. My friends and I were lucky enough to get a boat ride from Blackmill Bay on the mainland to Kinauchdrach harbour on the NE coast. There is a great route from there to the west coast of the island where you can explore and camp within some incredible cave/gloup complexes before heading south to loch Tarbert and the three Paps. I strongly recommend wild camping, but only for those competent with map and compass and fit enough to carry all your supplies and resulting litter. Only leave your footprints whenever visiting such wild and beautiful places.
That sounds amazing, definitely a more wild experience on the island that what I had!
..you've got some absolutely stunning paps yourself, judging by the thumbnail 😅
Love your videos and content!
Great video thanks!! We spent a week in Islay last year and popped over to Jura for a day and just fell in LOVE, it is so peaceful, so stunning and just magical, really magical. We had lunch at Antlers (lovely staff and food!) and just explored. We loved it so much we had to go back at the end of the week for another visit. I would love to go back. It also has a very exclusive golf course/hotel called Ardfin, you may need quite a lot of money to play & it looks rather difficult/challenging! Great video of your trip to Jura. It is a special island and well worth a visit!
Thank you for watching and nice to hear you had such a good time there!
That was so interesting
