George and family had a scary day boating in a weir from the Corryvreckan Whirlpool. He, son, niece and nephew were rescued by a lobster fisherman passing. Search for the more details. We went on the ferry from Stranraer over N. Eire and so on. Hello from west coast Canada!
Interesting to see an outside perspective of Jura. I am one of the people who runs tea on the beach, glad you enjoyed the chocolate cake! That's my speciality. Edit: oh, I remember meeting you on the road to Barnhill now, what a surprise to stumble upon this!
@KingJellyfishII your enterprise is very fondly remembered by us on one of our many summer holidays to Islay and Jura -absolutely perfect tea and cake seated with the stags grazing around us, whilst overlooking the sun-kissed Inverlussa beach. Blissful! greetings from Grampian 🫖🍰👍🏻🖐🏻
@@viktorialangton5942 Hope you have a good time in jura! Unfortunately the horse box which we usually run tea on the beach from is currently unsafe, and so I don't know if we'll be able to run it this year. We may be temporarily relocating to the distillery at lussa gin, though.
To me Jura is Paradise. We lived here for a few years during Covid and it was wonderful. What we really miss are the people more than the setting- an astonishingly high number of top quality people in such a small population
I've been quite happy sitting in the comfort of my home, discovering and sometimes revisiting parts of Scotland, my favourite place on Earth, through your brilliant videos. I love Scotland's history, culture, the people but not so much the cold, rain, wind and midges in my older years... However, this gem of a video now makes me want to go back again and stay in Barnhill Farmhouse. I've been a great fan of George Orwell ever since I read Animal Farm and then 1984. Thank you so much.
Excellent video Ruth, I had no idea Orwell wrote 1984 on Jura, what an amazing isolated location. Very glad I found your lovely channel, such genuine enthusiasm and wonder! I love that even when splashed with muddy water or attacked by a swarm of midges, your good humour always wins the day in your videos! (Still I imagine you have a quiet curse & compose yourself before filming!) Your composition, editing work & aerial shots are all so well done. Even if unintentionally, you are a terrific cultural ambassador for Scotland, many people (the right kind of tourist) will be inspired to visit these places you portray with such affection and sensitivity. Wishing you good luck in your pursuit of otters, love from HK!
I love watching your videos, I'm addicted. Getting to see all these amazing places from the comfort of the living room 😂. You are very articulate, informative, brave, and a kind, friendly soul. Well done 👏 😃
In 1972 I spent a week on Jura specifically to walk the Paps, at the time there were thousands of adders everywhere went. We were allowed to pitch our tents in the new graveyard at Kells which is a tiny settlement about a mile north of the pub. Sadly the pub was owned by a cockney woman who adhered to the then strict licensing laws in Scotland which meant pubs shut at 10 o’clock. A local was enterprising enough to give us a lift in his van up the north where we visited the Corryvrechan whirlpool but it was so foggy you couldn’t see anything but there were what’s called raised beaches and other interesting geological things to explore. Curiously the distillery was closed and had been for some time, I believe it reopened a few years later. Love the wee travelogue.
Thanks! American “Oil brat” who had lived in Aberdeen 1975-1980. Very fond memories, particularly of the people. Beautiful country but the weather would leave anyone with PTSD😂. Still, the people made it worth it.
I remember reading Orwell's "1984" as part of an English class assignment my sophmore year [USA grade 10] in high school [1965]. What a TOTAL treat to see the house that novel was written in! A wonderful tour of this wild and remote Island. I ❤George Orwell's House - perhaps I will be lucky enough to stay there one day. The deer are magnificent. I once spent a memorable evening drinking a bottle of Jura whisky with a new friend, though we were nowhere near Scotland at the time. ❤
Loved Jura, been twice on our bikes. The second time a foot passenger was £1 and bikes free, the ferry sailed for our £2 fares. Camped at the Jura Hotel and then cycled to Tea on the Beach and had two rounds of superb tea and cake each sheltering from a storm in the horsebox. Past Lussa Gin (closed that day) and on to the end of the road. Also had the feeling of being the only medieval people on earth when met the cattle grazing the beach.
Hello Ruth, just wanted to see something relaxing to-day, so what better than to see one of your video's, and at the same time learn something new. Many thanks and best wishes. Andrew.
Great video. I live in the Ashdown Forest in Sussex. We have adders - we are mainly heathland. so we have lizards, adders, slow worms and grass snakes and lots of fallow deer.
Orwell's rented home on Jura is beautiful! When I was in high school in the early '70's, 1984 was required reading. I think I would need a bit of company to live there full time.
Great video Ruth! I love the drone shots of the landscape and the wonderful wildlife segments with the deer. The video shot from Ernie as you drive down the narrow roads is also wonderful to watch.
There's a yearly Paps of Jura race. Went through the Correyvreckan whirlpool on Waverley paddle steamer in May and it was fairly lively. Calmac dont sail to Jura , its Highland council that runs the ferry.
The adder you show in the video is probably Vipera berus, also known as the common European adder and the common European viper - in the family of adders. So there are other species also called adder in that family. The UK, like Belgium and the Netherlands, may only have Vipera berus, but one or more other species can be found in Europe, still. A bite from this species can be more severe than from V. berus and is very painful. According to Stemmler (1971), about 4% of all untreated bites are fatal. Responsible for 90% of all cases of snakebite in Italy and it is the only mortal snake in Italian mountains. (parts from Wiki)
Thank you Ruth. Just amazing. In response to your question yes i would live there in Barnhill & on Jura. Your channel is an absolute must for van lifers & Scottish travel information.😊
Lovely to see you enjoying the Islands of Scotland i was born at Bunnabhabhain in Islay in 1960 looking onto the paps of Jura every day i can shut my eyes and can see them and have wonderful childhood memories and can also remember the deer swimming from Jura to Islay
If you are scared of ticks, then I recommend that you avoid walking through ferns or long grass in the summer time. This is where they tend to hang out, as they can easily attach onto a passing deer (or you) when brushed against. A pair of wellington style boots can help keep them off and will also help with walking through boggy terrain. They are small, but you can easily see them. You are unlikely to get a disease if you remove them within an hour of their attachment. Be sure to disinfect the wound afterwards.
Another excellent blog Ruth. Jura is easily my favourite. We did hike to the end of the path and we were rewarded with an awesome show from the whirlpools. It's a tough old hike at the end, very wet and not well defined - it certainly tests your map skills 😁 Where to next I wonder .. 👍

Just found your videos. We’re doing a trip to the northern and western isles this September. Had already heard of Lusaka Gin and plan to visit. If the weather allows, will take a walk to visit Orwell’s house.
Loved seeing and hearing about your visit to Jura, where Orwell lived and wrote, seeing the deer, and yet abother distillery! I went in search of a distillery on the island state of Australia once years ago, down a dirt road, far into a forest in the rain. Never found it, vut did buy some in a shop in Port Arthur and also on the excellent ovenight ferry from Melbourn. Have you traveled to Tasmania (highly recommended) or elsewhere in Australia? Oh, I had also wanted to see Tasmanian Devils there, and saw several in sanctuaries.
Great to view your visit to Jura. I stayed in one of the bothy’s a couple of years ago. Saw loads of deer and a couple so adders. Stayed in the hotel on our last night which was fad and the food was superb.
Hi Ruth, yes love your videos, and keep them coming, I was born in Scotland, Buckie was as far north as I visited, moved to Canada when I was 31 yrs old, now on Vancouver Island.
Jura looks like a lovely place to explore. I'd really like to visit someday. Ruth you are living a life I envy. And I'm enjoying travel vicariously thru you and your wonderful videos.
I used to live in Wigan, where George Orwell stayed for a while researching for 'The Road To Wigan Pier'. One of the old Pier buildings is named after him and I used to enjoy visiting the pub. He certainly got around back in the day :) Beautiful island.
You have made the Isle of Jura a must see adventure for me as I was intrigued that George Orwell wrote 1984 here, in this remote house in the middle of nowhere . You asked, could any of your follower’s live here ?” I would find it FAR too remote and FAR too lonely as I am very gregarious . Although I live alone , I live within walking distance of several friends , AND I have all sorts of bakeries , cafes and grocery stores within walking distance in my village of Dundas. I love that this isle has a distillery ….the Jura Distillery ….and that you found a lovely place to buy treats on the honour system . You have such a gift of drawing your viewers into your journey , as if we are walking along with you . Warmest regards , Mary 🇨🇦
You take us to the most beautiful places! Yes, I could live there. New subscriber here, and I'm absolutely loving every video! Have a lovely, beautiful adventures kind of week.
Outstanding! Such a beautiful Island with so many interesting & fascinating things to see & experience! Including the majestic deer, the breathtaking scenery, the wee tea hut, George Orwell's holiday Cottage & much more! It is so interesting to hear about the Island & the sea & all the details you have shared here! It really is fascinating to see these wonderful remote, wild, places that most folks do not even hear about, let alone, get to see or visit. Thank you for sharing this delightful experience!
@@ruthaisling Animal Farm is a classic and easy to read and, despite its serious purpose, amusing at times. My favourite quote is "Two legs bad, four legs good" - (might be the other round to be fair!)
I recall seeing Islay and the Paps of Jura on my drive from Inverrary on the way to the Mull of Kintyre....I live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina which are somewhat like the Outer Hebrides...
Thank you for taking us to Jura, Ruth. I've often seen The Paps on videos from other islands and wondered what Jura was like. So beautiful, but I know from living in Canada 🇨🇦: where there are deer, there will be ticks. Here on the Pacific coast of course we also know that where there are deer, there will be cougar! That's something you don't have to watch out for in Scotland! Just adders and midges, I guess.
Read many books on all of the islands, when I were a lad. Tried unsuccessfully to move to several. Doubt I shall see them now. Plenty of adders down our way
Okay, yeah, Ruth is awesome, the history interesting, and the scenery breathtaking, but isn’t anyone going to take note of the incredibly impressive racks in the thumbnail? What are they feeding those deer?! 😎
Great video thanks!! We spent a week in Islay last year and popped over to Jura for a day and just fell in LOVE, it is so peaceful, so stunning and just magical, really magical. We had lunch at Antlers (lovely staff and food!) and just explored. We loved it so much we had to go back at the end of the week for another visit. I would love to go back. It also has a very exclusive golf course/hotel called Ardfin, you may need quite a lot of money to play & it looks rather difficult/challenging! Great video of your trip to Jura. It is a special island and well worth a visit!
Remarkable!... you drove past and apparently didn't notice and certainly don't mention or show the new golf course and the conversion of Jura House to a five star hotel a few miles south of the ferry port... I wonder why?
Was on the island a few weeks back, beautiful place. The lussa gin is by far the best I’ve ever had! Unfortunately I’ve just finished the bottle…now I realise I should have bought two .
As a big Orwell fan, I'm grateful to Ms. Aisling for taking her viewers to the author's writing refuge for a look.

That's great, I hope you have an amazing time there!
Jura looks like a lovely place to explore. I'd really like to visit someday. Ruth you are living a life I envy. And I'm enjoying travel vicariously thru you and your wonderful videos.
You should visit! Thank you for watching 🙏
I used to live in Wigan, where George Orwell stayed for a while researching for 'The Road To Wigan Pier'. One of the old Pier buildings is named after him and I used to enjoy visiting the pub. He certainly got around back in the day :) Beautiful island.
It sounds like he did!
Thanks Mary, where you live sounds really nice!
I can’t believe you didn’t go down to the house where Orwell wrote 1984- after that long hike??!! 😢😮 Even to walk around outside? Oh well…
As of August 2024, under the leadership of the Labour party, the world Orwell warned of, has come to be in the UK.
@@LawrenceMclean You've had Tory for 14 years you tadger
You take us to the most beautiful places! Yes, I could live there. New subscriber here, and I'm absolutely loving every video! Have a lovely, beautiful adventures kind of week.
Thanks for subscribing! Hope you enjoy the other videos.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video!
@@ruthaisling My pleasure I'm sure!
Another really interesting video. I've read all Orwell's works over the years so a real bonus to see his house on Jura. Great work Ruth.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I need to start reading some of his books now! Which is your favourite?
@@ruthaisling Animal Farm is a classic and easy to read and, despite its serious purpose, amusing at times. My favourite quote is "Two legs bad, four legs good" - (might be the other round to be fair!)
_"Getatable"_ ... well that's a new one. Never heard that word before. Thanks for the education Ruth.
Haha, I hadn't heard it before either but I like it!
@@ruthaisling 13:38 ... George Orwell obviously liked using unusual & rarely used words.
I recall seeing Islay and the Paps of Jura on my drive from Inverrary on the way to the Mull of Kintyre....I live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina which are somewhat like the Outer Hebrides...
I enjoy this video, you had me smiling all the way through.
I'm so glad! 😊
A lovely lost world.very refreshing vlog.thx😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Beutiful scenery wow and those old Volcanos thats what they are fantastic 👏 ❤
Scenery there is so lovely 😍
Thank you for taking us to Jura, Ruth. I've often seen The Paps on videos from other islands and wondered what Jura was like. So beautiful, but I know from living in Canada 🇨🇦: where there are deer, there will be ticks. Here on the Pacific coast of course we also know that where there are deer, there will be cougar! That's something you don't have to watch out for in Scotland! Just adders and midges, I guess.
Thanks for watching! Wow, I’ve never seen a cougar before, do they attack?
Yes, come to canada i take thee to rge north see polar bear, grizzly moose@ruthaisling
Read many books on all of the islands, when I were a lad. Tried unsuccessfully to move to several. Doubt I shall see them now. Plenty of adders down our way
I could 100% live at that "cabin". Thanks for sharing, Ruth!
Okay, yeah, Ruth is awesome, the history interesting, and the scenery breathtaking, but isn’t anyone going to take note of the incredibly impressive racks in the thumbnail? What are they feeding those deer?! 😎
Glad I came across your channel. Entertaining and informative videos with high quality footage throughout, kudos from Norway!
Thank you so much, I'd love to visit Norway sometime!
Thank you for watching and nice to hear you had such a good time there!
Beautiful. I miss Scotland so much.
Please visit again soon
Remarkable!... you drove past and apparently didn't notice and certainly don't mention or show the new golf course and the conversion of Jura House to a five star hotel a few miles south of the ferry port... I wonder why?
Don't forget the 2 legged ones you meet at your local pub .
Fantastic video. Never thought of visiting but will do now
Thank you! Enjoy your trip there!
Paps of Jura are just impressive !
Was on the island a few weeks back, beautiful place. The lussa gin is by far the best I’ve ever had! Unfortunately I’ve just finished the bottle…now I realise I should have bought two .
Beautiful video, beautiful Scotland
It really is!
I went there last summer with a friend of mine who lives near Falkirk. Its an amazing place. You shuld have gone to the bothy!!
