I hitchhiked through Scotland in 1977, and got picked up by the owner of the Glenfiddich distillery. He explained all about how Glenfiddich is made, why it is the best bar none, and how to appreciate Scotch in the best way. Back then there were not that many Americans hitchhiking, and he was glad to give us a ride.

You were wondering if there are more square lighthouses.
Well, on the island of Terschelling here in the Netherlands there is a big squared lighthouse called 'Brandaris' named after Saint Bandarius and dating back to 1594 (though the first issue of the lighthouse dates back as early as 1323 as top of a church). The lighthouse is still in use and manned for sea traffic control.
The island features also it's own whisky called 'Saint Brandaris', though it is distilled at Islay.
There's also a whisky version called 'The Lost Whisky' named after an incident by which after a storm in 1969 dozens of whisky barrels washed ashore.
Now this new whisky, distilled by Ardmore and after aging in bourbon and rum casks, is shipped on board of the Dutch barkentine (tallship) 'Thalassa' to sail around the world before being bottled.

I've tried quite a few of the Islay whiskys, and for such a small island they definitely taste a lot different to each other. Each have their own charm and almost always I can find a new nuance to the taste.
A few hints for those who want to test peaty Islay whisky: Start at the lower end of peatiness, and move on to the heavier ones as you get used to them. That leaves your taste buds a fair chance to notice smaller differences. If you have a strong (say something like above 55%) and it is non-chill filtered, it might benefit from a few drops of water to open it up and give you even more flavour.

Ms Aisling. Today I had a 12 year old Highland Park. I had asked for an accompanying glass of water and the barmaid said "Should I pour that in the whisky"? I don't think I have screamed No with such anguish or emphasis in my life. As a regular in my local I have some incredibly small influence over which whisky they bring in. I suggested Laphroaig. Your vlog has reminded me after too many years of what a damnably civilised thing sipping a single malt can be. Many of the other regulars are necking lagers, some of which I appallingly understand to be Australian. I remain however a Scottish gentleman. With thanks.

Hey Ruth ! A very lovely video. I was aware of Islay, and Lagavulin through the American TV comedy series "Parks and Recreation". In my favorite episode, Ron Swanson,(perhaps America's manliest man) follow a series of clues to Lagavulin where his favorite Scotch is made, and is reduced to tears. Most, if not all, Bourbon barrels come from my home state of Kentucky, White Oak barrels can be used only once to make Bourbon. I hope that when you find yourself near Glasgow you will visit Renfrewshire, origin of my family name.

I first heard of the island after reading a story about a young man called Leonard Dawson who moved to the island age 34, originally from Lincolnshire. The story goes from a little Portnahaven church over 200 mourners followed Leonard along the winding road to the foot of Ben Tart a’Mhill. On the way to the top every man had helped to carry Leonard to the hilltop as his last request was to be buried at the top. Hopefully I’ll visit one day soon. Great video Ruth, lovely introduction to Islay and its whiskys!
I've tried Laphroaig, but find it to perfumed for my tastes
If you visit Orkney, or are just curious about other whiskys, I can recommend Highland Park whisky - I find it has a very smooth taste (for a single malt whisky), though I've only tried the 10 year old
Did any of the distillery tours mention what they are doing to make peat consumption sustainable - I guess they use additional heating so the peat is only used for the flavour its smoke provides ... I doubt the whisky industry is ready for artificial peat smoke, though it is probably technically feasible!

    • @ruthaisling

Your absolute joyousness comes through in every bit of your dialogue (hmmm, the whisky might have something to do with it?). I have enjoyed a lot of the Speyside whiskys as well as Laphroaig, Lagavulen, Bowmore and Ardbeg in my time (I'm 74 now). A trip to Islay is definitely on the cards...all the way from Mumbai, India. I've lived in Scotland for over 20 years and have only ever visited one island, Islay. Oddly it was during a trip home to Ireland that inspired the trip to Islay. We sailed over in a yacht race and stayed for two days. We hired a minibus and drove round the island visiting the pubs and sights. I absolutely loved it.
Now my retirement plan involves climbing munros and visiting all of the islands and touring the Highlands.
