Visiting The World's Whisky Island | Islay
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 авг 2023
- I visit the Scottish Island of Islay, the world’s only whisky island 🥃. The Isle of Islay, located on Scotland’s west coast is one of Scotland whisky regions, known for its Islay peated whisky and home to 9 working Islay distilleries. Islay can be accessed by a 2-3 hour ferry from Kennacraig or Oban or it’s possible to fly with flights from Glasgow taking around 45 minutes.
I take the Calmac ferry to Isle of Islay with my campervan Ernie and aswell as exploring the island, I also do my own Islay whisky tour. I taste Islay single malts at some of the distilleries on the whisky trail near Port Ellen but I also pick up some driver’s drams so I can do my own whisky tasting and decide for myself which is the best Islay whisky back at the Islay campsite.
Islay scotch is renowned worldwide and I make it my goal to visit all 9 Islay distilleries during my time on the island - Kilchoman, Laphroaig, Lagavullin, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, Ardnahoe, Caol Ila and Bruichladdich. The more Islay scotch I try, the more of a whisky fan I become!
Join me on this Scotland travel adventure through Islay as I learn more about whisky, Scotland’s national drink!

WHO AM I?
I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland. I moved overseas after university in 2011 and I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in my home country Scotland and I’ve never even visited places like the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye or the NC500.
I am a huge fan of campervan travel and alternative living and while living in Japan, my partner and I converted both a van and a bus into campervans. We explored Japan extensively, sharing our adventures on our two Japanese language RUclips channels. I've spent over 600 nights living in vans, it’s my favourite way to travel due to the incredible freedom, adventure and the affordability.
My campervan is a 2001 Toyota Hiace high roof van. It was originally used by the Royal Mail and then purchased by the previous owner and self-converted into a DIY campervan. Although the van is already converted, in order for it to be an off-grid living van, it requires some campervan DIY, especially when it comes to electrics and plumbing.
On this channel, I’ll be sharing more about this van, any DIY I do, and most importantly sharing my road trip adventures as I finally get to travel my beautiful home country of…. SCOTLAND!

I think that was the most beautiful travel report on youtube I‘ve seen so far. No self-display, no stressful editing for an audience with the attention of a goldfish… just someone really enjoying the beauty of this place. I also really enjoyed watching it!
Wow, thank you!
this really is a very well done narrative. it doesnt hurt that she's very easy on the eyes too!
This is hands down one of the best Islay travel Videos out there and i say that as a Whisky nerd.
That means a lot, thanks so much for watching!
I hitchhiked through Scotland in 1977, and got picked up by the owner of the Glenfiddich distillery. He explained all about how Glenfiddich is made, why it is the best bar none, and how to appreciate Scotch in the best way. Back then there were not that many Americans hitchhiking, and he was glad to give us a ride.
That’s such a great story!!
The 16 years old Lagavulin is one of my all time favourites
I like it very much. My wife says it smells like an ashtray, so I can't have it when she is around.
I used to always have a bottle in the cabinet. But it's become a bit spendy; a bottle used to go for €50 for years. Now it's €110.
@@markburnham7512 Very accurate. My girlfriend, and also my mother, says it smells like a tire on fire. I love it.
Not all will like this whisky at first, but keep drinking it and one day you will start to like it, after a few days more you will love it.
@@markburnham7512 it smells like diesel fuel, as one guy told me. That means more of it for the rest of us :-)
お元気そうで何よりです。また日本に来てくださいね
11:44 standing right outside the very first house I stayed in as a child - really fond memories of my time on Islay.
Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland.
You can't go wrong with Lagavulin. I find it nice and smooth.
A Distillery tour of Islay is a dream trip for me. Thank you for showing me the way. Hopefully I will be able to do it one day.
Good Luck, Andrew!
My SPEYSIDE whisky video is now available to watch: ruclips.net/video/nfaksXDqXOY/видео.html
I had the BEST time on Islay learning more about Scottish whisky and by the time I left, I'd also learnt how to pronounce all the distillery names correctly. 😂 Let me know your favourite whisky below!
I’m not the biggest fan of peaty whisky. So I tend not to go for the Islay malts with the exception of Bruichladdich which is definitely one of my favourites. Thank you for showing me part of my homeland that I’ve never got round to visiting. Slàinte mhath. 🥃
Beautifully done video! I have to agree that the peated expressions are some of the most unique and have the most character. Laphroaig and Ardbeg make a beautiful whisky but it's hard to hold a candle to the Lagavulin 16!
You were wondering if there are more square lighthouses.
Well, on the island of Terschelling here in the Netherlands there is a big squared lighthouse called 'Brandaris' named after Saint Bandarius and dating back to 1594 (though the first issue of the lighthouse dates back as early as 1323 as top of a church). The lighthouse is still in use and manned for sea traffic control.
The island features also it's own whisky called 'Saint Brandaris', though it is distilled at Islay.
There's also a whisky version called 'The Lost Whisky' named after an incident by which after a storm in 1969 dozens of whisky barrels washed ashore.
Now this new whisky, distilled by Ardmore and after aging in bourbon and rum casks, is shipped on board of the Dutch barkentine (tallship) 'Thalassa' to sail around the world before being bottled.
That's so interesting, thanks for sharing!
Another fab video Ruth, I am not a whiskey person but love how you tasting and giving your opinion on the whiskeys. Like you I think there are so many nice places to visit in Scotland. 🏴
I agree! I wasn’t a huge whisky fan either but visiting Islay converted me 😅
Amazing video, amazing whisky tour, very beautiful island!
@@ruthaisling
Amazing tour! Great video! I really enjoyed watching it. Thank you for the great content, dear Ruth!
Happy New Year ! This is Simply Splendid THANK YOU !! 😎💯❤👀🕺🌹💎🎩
What a wonderful journey, having lived in Shetland years ago i have always been wanting to get out to the Western Isles. Right, now time to make a brew, and watch the new Speyside video! ❤
We LOVED Islay! We'd go back in a heartbeat.
Love whisky from Islay. Another trip to add to my bucket list!
Found you this morning and binged to this episode. Enjoying your fun. Thank you

Maybe I will haha!
Terrific video! Great views of the island and of all the distilleries. Great information in a well-crafted package.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Ruth - this was a fantastic video, well made and lots of great info and shots! I'm going to Islay in a few weeks and planning to go to most of the places you did, I'm super excited!
Laphroaig is my favorite of the peaty scotches, but I can't wait to try them all! Cheers!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I hope you have an amazing trip there!
Excellent, cheers
Thanks for watching!
Lovey video and Laphroaig 10 years old is my favourite thanks again ❤🥃
Glad you enjoyed it
Lovely video and you did such a great job with it Ruth. This trip is on my bucket list!
Thanks Geoff, please make it happen, I'm sure you'll love it as much as I did!
I am from Australia, and only found your interesting channel last week. For a Scot you are easy to understand, and your shows are informative and very interesting. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for watching the videos!
I love this young woman’s videos! She is so informative about a place that I have ties to, and plan to visit.
Thank you Donna, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Its always more refreshing to hear and listen to a cute person when pondering over something so important as peaty whiskey. Good job.
Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed this tour. I am now researching renting a camper van for our upcoming trip to Scotland. And you are such a charming tour guide!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for doing this. Am a great fan of Islay whiskies and hope to make this tour one day.
Great video Ruth! Very interesting about all the different whiskeys. Love the part was when you turned around and all the cows were behind you. Lol! I love the Scottish cows. My husband and I were in Scotland in 2014 before we had our daughter and I got the see Scottish cows up close but behind a fence. I’ve always wanted to pet one but only got to touch a stuffed replica in Edinburgh souvenir shop. Thanks so much for your lovely videos. You have a beautiful country. ❤
Seeing the cows was a bit surprise! I get how you want to pet one, they look so soft!!
Wow that’s a tour for my list! Nice fun video as always. And thanks for sharing. Lagavulin and the Ardbeg blends are my favourites….but all of them have something special….😀👍
Thanks for watching!
Great vlog thank you so much for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this video. What a great experience and one day my wife and I will go. Thank you!
Enjoy it when you do go!
I live in North Carolina and absolutely love the Bowmore product. Thanks for a relaxing and very watchable tour.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another "I really must go there" gem Ruth, and yet again it looks perfect for cycle touring!
I saw lots of people on bikes!
I so love you Ruth for Whisky tasting. So funny great tour also x
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching the video!
Ruth, Your voice is delightful, peaceful, and easy to understand. We visited Scotland (but not Islay) this summer and had some trouble deciphering our tour guide's words. I'm looking forward to enjoying your other videos. Thank you!
Glad to hear that, some people do have very strong accents 😂
What beautiful country! If I'm not mistaken, depending on the angle you are looking the land across the water could be either Northern Ireland or the Republic. Pretty cool!
I am a big lover of Scotch whisky. First time I see your channel. Excellent review and landscapes. thank you!
Thank you for watching, feel free to check out my Speyside video too, you might like it
Another great video, Ruth!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Totally professional video............... the BBC could learn a trick or two from you................... congratulations.
Wow, thanks!
Excellent video Ruth, very interesting. Now I want to visit!
Thanks for watching Steve, you totally should!
The breathtaking landscapes, rugged coastlines, and the rich history of whisky-making all came together to create a truly unforgettable experience.
It was a fantastic trip!
@@ruthaisling You are absolutely stunning x
So beautiful place
It really is!
That was a dream - beautiful views and a visit to ALL of Islay's distilleries! I thought if you drank the contents of ALL of those driver's sample bottles, you wouldn't be driving anywhere the next day! Excellent video.
Hahaha, they took a few weeks to get through and I enjoyed them with friends too!
Your videos are so refreshing and interesting you would make a brilliant tour guide, as someone who finds it difficult to spend much time on my feet it's great to follow you on your journeys in our country of Scotland, thank you 😊
I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos and can travel vicariously through them, thank you for always leaving nice comments!
I have been watching your video's but particularly liked this one as I love visiting Islay and drinking whisky.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely video Ruth. Really enjoying following your travels from south of the border. 🏴🇬🇧🏴
Thanks Matt, I really appreciate it!
Amazing, thank you for a nice tour. It was very brave of you tasting those rough spirits. What a beautiful journey. I will definetly go on this trip one time as well.
Have fun when you do go!
Great content as always ❤
Thank you, that means a lot! ❤
@ruthaisling You are lovely and your content is great ❤
We found your video yesterday, very beautiful. My husband and son are big whisky fans. So we visited Islay this autumn. The video gave us lots of memories of our journey, many places we also visited. Had a selfcatering accomodation on the road to Carraig Fhada Lighthouse.
We love Scotland 🏴
Awesome, there is another whisky video coming very soon so please look forward to it! 😀
Aye lassie! This was another beautiful, captivating & truly fascinating adventure! Islay is such a wonderful place! The scenery both from & on the whole Island is just breathtaking. The Seafood on the Island looks so delicious too! Every time I watch your videos I get so hungry each time you eat at these amazing Seafood places. Then, I go & eat my cheese sandwich! LOL. Oh my! I am so jealous! Beyond that, those bonnie Highland cattle there are just so cute & quirky! The beige colored laddie standing behind you there is really amazing! I truly love those fluffy Highland 'Coos & the bonnie Land of Scotland! Thank you for sharing another amazing Scottish adventure!
Thank you so much for watching! Islay is such a wonderful place, I agree!
@@ruthaisling 'My pleasure!
Ruth you'll have a sore head in the morning 😂😂 great tour thanks
I’ve actually found that single malt whisky doesn’t give me a hangover 😂
@ruthaisling good stuff what was the brand I'm partial to a single malt when I'm home from work 3 day bottle ha ha
Really enjoyed your video. It brings back memories of the time I spent working on Islay with a small company from South Wales. Worked mostly maintaining buildings in Ardbeg Distillery and lived in a rented a house in Bowmore. That was back in 1968 and I was 17 years of age the time. A beautiful island is Islay.
That sounds great, what lovely memories!
My great grandmothers brother washed up at Port Charlotte. I hope to visit Islay some day !
Great video. I have been lucky enough to have visited Islay 3 times and love it and all the whisky
3 times, amazing!
That was an outstanding video visit to Islay. It's now on my short list of places to visit.
Thanks Dave!
Hello Ruth, thank you for sharing this nice video of your country and the water of life. Great video and also an educational introduction to Ardnahoe the newest distillery which many may not know yet..
Thaks for watching!
You described this trip in the most charming fashion. I am only more convinced that we have the most amazing places to discover right here in Scotland!
Glad you enjoyed it!
There's a square lighthouse in Green Point, Cape Town, which has been operational since 1824 🇿🇦
That's interesting, thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
There's also a square lighthouse on the Isle of May - I saw it in a Steve Marsh video.
Hey Ruth ! A very lovely video. I was aware of Islay, and Lagavulin through the American TV comedy series "Parks and Recreation". In my favorite episode, Ron Swanson,(perhaps America's manliest man) follow a series of clues to Lagavulin where his favorite Scotch is made, and is reduced to tears. Most, if not all, Bourbon barrels come from my home state of Kentucky, White Oak barrels can be used only once to make Bourbon. I hope that when you find yourself near Glasgow you will visit Renfrewshire, origin of my family name.
That's an interesting story Mark, thanks for sharing! I'll need to give Bourbon a go sometime, any recommendations?
@@ruthaisling My favorite is Woodford Reserve. Indeed, give it a go ! Also happens to be the "Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby". You may be interested in the "Bourbon Trail" in Kentucky. A good way to explore the state, and our many state parks. Come see us !

Ruth.... I totally had a great time watching you tour the island. I spent two weeks touring Scotland and I now SO regret not making my way there. But at least I enjoyed it vicariously through you.
Hope you make it there soon!
Thank you very much for your Islay report. I enjoyed it tremendously. Hope to be able to make a whiskey trip soon.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can’t wait to go myself for a wee dram. 😮
Have a great time there!
Yes!! The wait is over 😊 another great video.. thanks @ruthaisling 😊
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed it! ❤
Beautiful Ruth.
Slainte 😊
Great music as well.
Thanks for all the info.
Laphroaig is my fav.
Highland cows are so cute & very peaceful.
Thanks so much for watching!
Your videos are brilliant Ruth. We were in Scotland in our campervan in May this year. Ìsle of Skye & a lot of the NC500. It's amazing scenery. I'm a whisky fan but not the peaty ones! Although Jura Smooth is very palatable 😊 keep on doing what you're doing.
Thanks Mark, happy to hear you're enjoying the videos. Sounds like you had a great trip, would love to get to Skye at some point, maybe after the summer when most of the tourists have gone!
This was just delightful! A trip to islay (from northeast US) is on my list of resolutions for the year and this is just so inspiring! Thank you for bringing us along with you.
Thanks for watching Grant! Hope you have a wonderful time there!
So glad to have found your content. 2024 adventures sorted! - thanks
I'm so happy to hear this video was helpful!
Just came across your travel Vlogs, we love Scotland, so was good to see your travels to give us ideas as where to visit with our motorhome, great vlog, great information, keep up the good work. Having worked in Scotland and the Outer Hebrides' and sampling some of the Whisky tours will keep us coming back for more, I so want to go to the Laphroaig distillery.
Thanks very much for watching, I'm glad the videos provide some inspiration!
Really enjoyed watching this. I’m 60 years old and always wanted to go to Islay. I love the whisky from that island and I’m certainly going to plan a trip now. Thanks so much for the informercial ! ! ❤👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your videos, Ruth! We have done two multi-week campervan tours of Argyll, Lochaber, Glen Coe, Wester Ross, southern Sutherland, the Cairngorms, and Perthshire. We adore Scotland and traveling by campervan. If you have never been to Kilmartin Glen with its Neolithic monuments, you should definitely go.
All those trips sound amazing, thanks for the recommendation. I’ll make sure to visit there sometime!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Peaty Whisky is my favorite Dram.. 👍😎
Hoots mon, I've never seen so many clouds. Good to see where my favourite whisky comes from.
Not a big whiskey fan personally but the history of the distillerys and Islay as a whole is amazing. Thanks for another fab video Ruth ✨😎
Thanks Todd, glad you enjoyed it!
Love a drop of whisky, never thought to do a whisky pub crawl but it looked fun. especially enjoyed the 'getting drunk with Ruth' part at the end :)
It was the most fun part, getting to try them all!
Although I am not a Whisky drinker I really enjoyed this Blog. Beautifully put together. Congratulations and well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
