      Turns out its actually Whisky, not Whiskey. Comes from a regional translation difference between Scottish and Irish Gaelics, and in the late 1800s Scottish Whisky was poorer quality than Irish Whiskey so they used the e to differentiate them. Then, the irish had a mass exodus to the USA cuz of the potato famine, so now Whiskey is USA and Ireland sourced, Whisky is everywhere else and traditionally Scotland

      Thanks for sharing this with me! A distillery that comes to mind you may want to talk to is the Barton distillery. The reason I bring them up is that about a month ago, their warehouse collapsed under the weight of all their barrels. This article reflects when half the warehouse collapsed. About a week or so later the rest of it collapsed. It may be a good learning opportunity to see how a company bounces back from a loss of that size. www.bizjournals.com/louisville/news/2018/06/22/bourbon-warehouse-collapses-in-bardstown.html

    I know this comment was a joke but for the people freaking out about sanitation here’s the rub. They use magnets and filters to remove metals and rocks. Then after fermentation it’s cooked and distilled. Distillation means boiling the shit out of something until it vaporizes, you catch the vapor, chill it back into liquid form and concentrate it. They do this step 2 more times…..please if I missed something fill in the blanks.

    Great video. I’ve subscribed to the channel to see more of like content.
    BTW...I’m amazed at how many posters are complaining about workers walking on the grain. I’ve watched many videos of distilleries like Laphroaig and Bruichladdich that also maintain similar floor maltings and I’ve never once seen a negative comment about hygiene. People who know about distilleries know that the mash is cooked at a very high temperature and that the distillate is converted into steam before it condensed into the final product, with a >70% alcohol content , which in itself, kills germs and bacteria. I guess people in this day and age just need to be outraged about something.
    I’m also amazed by how many posters suggested automating a beautifully traditional manual process. I very much appreciate the craftsmanship of traditional distilleries, breweries, bakeries, wineries, salumeria, cheese makers, etc.. I also respect civic-minded companies like Springbank that maintains labor intensive methods so as to preserve jobs in an isolated rural community like Campbeltown.
    Keep up the good work!
    EDIT: Bowmore has floor maltings, not Bruichladdich.

    • @gianlucapagnoni283
      @gianlucapagnoni283 4 года назад +1

      The Distilleries with malting floors on Islay are: Laphroaig, Bowmore and Kilchoman.
      Bruichladdich doesn't have yet a malting floor but they are planning to do it because they want to be more local. Can't wait to go to visit Springbank next year!

    • @11thstalley96
      @11thstalley96 4 года назад +1

      Gianluca Pagnoni I appreciate the correction...I toured five distilleries in two days on Islay and got confused, but my point is still valid....walking on the barley isn’t going to affect the process at all. I’m also jealous of your upcoming visit to Springbank, so you can observe the entire distillation process at one site! I hope that they’ll be working on Longrow when you’re there.
      I was blown away when I learned on my recent visit to Italy that peated whisky is so popular that it’s widely available, at least at the bars and restaurants in Tuscany that I visited.
      Are you planning to visit Glengyle and Glen Scotia while you’re in Campbeltown?

    At Springbank the workers look like athlets from shovelling the Barley. In other distilleries they look like office clerks from pushing computer buttons. I was there several times and this is an ancient place of making whisky. They really use their maltfloors. In other distilleries these floors are only for the visitors and the malt is delivered in big tank trucks from maltings like Port Ellen maltings. Last time, when I was there with the guys from Cadenheads Cologne, the credo was: "Look around yourselves. You know where everything is."

      chico11mbit Hahahaha fact. Most of this guys can run circles around people half there age. Respect to Springbank. I was grateful they let me come work and show the process of how traditional whisky is made. Thanks for your comment. -Jeff

    Unbelievable amount of work to make a quality whiskey.
    Certainly they could automatize some of the processes, but I am sure they are very proud of making it handmade as much as possible.

    • @theRabidCoon
      @theRabidCoon 5 лет назад +2

      Yeah they have around 60 employees because they do everything on site and the old fashioned way. If they outsourced tasks like maintenance, bottling, malting etc. and automated the distillery they would have around 8-10 employees like most other distilleries.

      All the shovelling made my old back twitch in sympathy, I'm sure an industrial vaccum similar to those used for mulch spreading would be an amazing addition to the process

      Step Up My Body You’re right, but Springbank is a very civic-minded and socially responsible company. They look for ways to employ local people instead of automating every conceivable process to take jobs away from people. I wish more companies thought this way.
