AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on RUclips are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!
If you would be interested in a bit of unpleasant history, Lone Pine is a very short distance from the Manzanar relocation camp where 30,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated for 4 years during World War II. The camp is being reconstructed by the National Parks and open for public visitation. This is part of US history we should all be aware of.
Yes, we stopped there and although the visitor center was closed (covid), we read all the signs and did the driving tour. We are homeschooling our kids and this was an important part of history to show them. I highly recommend people going to visit the site. Thanks for mentioning it here!
It’s not unpleasant, it’s important. The only way to keep from repeating history is to remember and learn from it.
I'm Italian and my ancestors were interred in the US also...but no one speaks of it.
I’m part Cherokee. We are all something. Let’s get together.
They did a fantastic job on the visitor center at Manzanar - the sounds, the quotes, the names - I found it fascinating. Sad, but fascinating. I did a video on our visit to Manzanar, as it’s a place people should know about.
If you are able to get a site, at the base campground at 7,000 ft ( the start of the Mt Whitney climb ) is also incredible , it is just above the Alabama Hills
Completely on point about the Alabama Hills. One could spend a lifetime exploring the Owens Valley, Panamints, Sierra Nevada, White Mountains, Bristle cone pine forest and so on. The water wars and role of William Mulholland and Los Angeles is of interest.
Glad you discovered it.
God bless. At a time when we are hunkering down due to COVID Sean you and Kristy keep us hoping, positive and enjoying the best in life. Thank you for a truly scenic peaceful and always wonderfully candid video about friends and the outdoors. Stay safe and well you two!
Mail-in points came in after the game and Auburn won 147-42!
Lol!
I have driven by the Alabama Hills at least 400 times.! I am a regular 395 traveler. I did not know! Thank you! Thomyt.
I drove semi through that area on US 395 twenty years ago. Several vantage points along US 395 offer unbelievable views. And, a bit north of Lone Pine is the site of the Manzanar World War II Japanese detention camp. The geography and the remains of the old structures and their interpretive center provide quite the education for travelers.
"Serving the RV community since 2006." I love it. 😁
Mt. Whitney is a very special place for me and my husband. We hiked to the top 19 years ago and my hubby proposed! We are now retired and traveling in our RV. Lone Pine and Alabama Hills is a destination of ours next year!
If you keep heading north on the 395 you will make it to Mammoth in a bout 2 hours. Lots of boondocking spots in the forest around there. Wooded mountains with lots of hiking trails, though snow in the winter. There is a really cool geothermal spot called hot creek off the 395 I think near Mammoth. That whole eastern Sierra area is beautiful and not very crowded. Well worth visiting!
Shhhhissh! Don’t tell everyone. I’ve been coming here since the 60s. Great place to boondock. It can get crowded.
Yes from video too late! My mother owned a restaurant in Lone Pine for many years. She lived there for 30 years 69-02. Every time I visited in summers I'd hike and camp. No one around! Beautiful area.
Be sure to try Eric Schatz Bakkery before you leave the area. Line to get in was completely around the building today. Everything there is awesome
You always produce the BEST videos. They are informative , humorous in a good way, polite and above all the BEST personalities on the net... Thanks for all you produce for us all.
Thanks, I am humbled by your kind words! 🙏🏻
The key to be able to enjoy any area to its potential is planning. With good solar, plenty of fresh water, and propane, you will make the most of your time!
This is a really accurate assessment of this spot. We were sharing the same camp "site" area with them, in fact you can see our minivan and tent in the background, and my parent's airstream! It's an awesome area and really excellent for kids, our kids (and dogs too!) had an amazing time. Breathtaking views, and our site was only about 20 minutes to town even though it felt really out there. For water you can go to Portuguese Joe campground on the way in, and there's a spigot next to the bathrooms. Great video!
We were just there in October. It was our second time there and I will say that we arrived on a Tuesday afternoon and it was a challenge to find an open spot that would accommodate our rig (35 ft 5th Wheel). It is definitely getting more an more popular these days. It is definitely becoming a more popular destination. :)
Sean & Kristy ...thanks for sharing Alabama Hills....
"Looks like a good place for an ambush" or "It's quiet, too quiet" Will be running through my head when we finally visit there. Thanks for the great video. This place is now on my list.
The desert can be so gorgeous! I love these videos where I can enjoy the beauty and learn new facts about the country we live in! Thank you again for the effort you put into your videos.
Forgot another fun place is Aston canyon off intestate 15 north of Barstow, steep drop off into the camp ground,if your trailer has good brakes not a problem....I would go in with my 1964 1/2 ton and a 26 foot trailer years ago and never had a problem..
Watched this last night...I was so overwhelmed with wishing we could do that, I had to go to bed. We have a trip planned for Spring break 2021 to Vegas staying at the Oasis. But, boondocking is what I'd really like to do. We've never really tested our RV out on how long/well the batteries, tanks, fresh water would last. Plus, we're gynormius...41ft...makes it tough. Amazing video - thank you!
Your rv trips are a perfect "stop and see" on a swing trip to California and back to Boaz.
I'm glad you made it to the Alabama Hills. It's one of my favorite places. Potable water is usually available at nearby Tuttle Creek Campground, which is also a nice place. The last time I stopped at Boulder Creek RV Resort they had stopped letting guests use the dump station due to vandalism. Someone had thrown rocks down the drain and plugged it up. I don't know if that situation has been rectified. The WWII Manzanar Japanese Relocation Camp is a few miles north of Lone Pine and shouldn't be missed.
We camp at Tuttle Creek for water and the outhouses.
I’ve been there many times on photography trips but never camping. It is truly a magical place.
Great post! The Alabama Hills are awesome! Not overcrowded like the Western Sierra side. Big enough to see something new every time we return. And the place is a drone paradise.
Wife and I camped there during the big fire this last summer and it was an eerie slight to see the smoke drift over those mountains.
The areas for bouldering are reminiscent of the formations in Joshua Tree National Park.
This truly does look like a hidden gem. Great video. I said it once and I'll say it again; Sean's drone footage has completely upped the game when it comes to getting the perfect shots. Lastly, as a native New Orleanian, I always love the reference to Mardi Gras!
Thanks for showcasing dispersed camping in California. Great video great scenery great people!
Stayed overnight last year on my way to a travel nurse gig in Cali (in one of the pullouts you showed) - absolutely beautiful!! If anyone's worried about cell service, finding a spot on the East side of the Alabamas (i.e. the Lone Pine side) you should get decent service - you can also hike up to the top of one of the hills (from the West side) to pick up enough signal to get a call out or check email
As usual...thanks for the video, Sean & Kristy. We travel all over the country, but this reminds me to spend more time in our home state of California.
There is a Chevron fuel station on the south side Lone Pine that sells freshwater.
Love camping in the Alabama Hills. There is a BLM campground there Tuttlel creak that does have dump station and water Mar - Oct.
How big of a rig can get in at Tuttle creek camp
@@rickmadison7241 BLM recommends 30' feet but some sites would fit a larger unit they have 83 sites and some are pull thru
And Tuttle creek has great internet service if you turn to the west and stay in one of the sites at the far end of the loop.
Free water is also available at the visitor center in Lone Pine. They have a spigot in the parking lot near the walkway to the center. Also, do any food shopping in Bishop as Lone Pine only has one small very expensive market.
Everyone, check first for permits to enjoy the Alabama Hills. No more spur of the moment camping there. Strong restrictions now.
Hey guys!!! Smash that thumbs-up button...
One of our favorite places to go.
Thanks for the info on the Alabama Hills!
And....... RTR
Loved it so very cool I love dry camping but worry about being on my own for safety sake as a female solo
Traveler
Love the Alabama Hills. So glad to see you in our favorite part of the country. Hope you went north of Lone Pine along Hwy 395. So many other beautiful areas to explore. Fun video. Stay safe.
Looks like the perfect time of year to visit. Enjoyed the hiking clips. Thanks for sharing......
Loved our time there! We camped there a few years back in early March - cold, but not very many people.
Had a nice walk in Algonquin Provincial Park (Ontario, Canada) this afternoon. Our dog is tired tonight!! Drove through Mew Campground, which is open all winter. There is a little snow in the shaded areas. We were surprised to see several sites with tent on them. Even saw an Airstream!!!
Thank you for sharing this Gem!! I like that your channel was named after the Long Long Trailer. I saw that movie as a kid and instantly fell in love with RVing!
Thanks for continuing to share this content with us. I sincerely enjoy your humor and information on locations, gear and maintenance.
There's another channel I used to subscribe to, but they stopped sharing "available for free RV camping" unless you're a paid Patreon subscriber under the guise of people trashing sites, threatening their closure.
Translation: Availability is more competitive with the boom in RV camping and we feel we own it and we don't want to share it with others because we no longer have our choice of free camping.
If they really want to protect these areas from closure, they should double their effort on getting the message out, not treat it like their secret fishing hole.
I've been through Lone Pine many times over the last 30 years, and spent the night in town many times. Now that we have an RV, this spot is on our radar. This is a very timely review. I was just researching this area for boondocking literally in the last week! So, thanks!!
Just so neet. You guys do a great job showing what getting off the interstate has to offer.
You guys are Awesome, really enjoy seeing all the places you camp at, someday We will be able to some of that, for now still working in Olympia WA, The Alabama hills looks like a place that would be great this time of year, Safe travels 🤗🤗
Thank you!
There was another You Tube RVer that was over there recently. I have a buddy that takes his boys camping over there. They are dirt bike fanatics.
I have always wanted to camp there. We have traveled up and down 395 and camped all along it. Just got back from the other side, Death Valley but didn't take the road to Lone Pine. Maybe next year. Beautiful video.
Hey Sean, towing that Silver Airstream along those bumpy roads...the temptation to yell
"Hi-Yo-Silver" must've come over you once or twice...right? Ha. I've never been to the Alabama Hills but would love to see in person what is so familiar from watching Clayton Moore, Roy, Gabby and Hoppy hunt down the bad guys. Thanks for posting, made me smile:)
You got that right! :D
Great video. Another lace to add to our go to list. How do your friends like their Black Series camper?
They love it! It's a really cool little rig!
And you inspired us with your solar and Battleborn Batteries. We are having our dealer install a new controller and I ordered the new batteries.
Still an Auburn fan! We'll get you next year
Wow! We were just down the road (14) at Jawbone Canyon and Red Rock Canyon at the same time last week! And yes, we got the wicked wind as well.
Will have to check it out when we travel west, if it doesn't get over crowded now lol! Tonight I looked for campsite availability on 30A ,after watching your video of the area, for before or after Christmas . All campsites are booked!
Love that area , grew up camping all along the Eastern Sierra love it.
Love your travelogs!
Oh wow, I never knew of that place. Getting my Bucket List notepad out and adding the "Alabama Hills". Thanks Sean and Kristy for another great video.......Russell D.
Went through that area a few months ago. Very pretty, Lone Pin was nice, wish the museums had been open. Didn't think about camping there, might have to do that in the future.
Nice that you found this great place!!
A day's drive from where we live in SoCal, this is on my list of places to visit soon! Thanks for the video. I'm working on my TT's boon docking capabilities before heading up that way.
Looking forward to traveling to most of the places you all have been showing us. Just waiting for my wife to retire and our youngest to finish college. Also still researching for the right rig.
Lone Pine California, that sent me to Google maps. Another wonderful place to discover.
Back in the summer of 1969 a buddy and I decided to go explore around the Alabama Hills in my old VW Bug. We drove up Movie road (I don't think it was named then). There was no one out there back then. Few people went out in hills. Most went up to Whitney Portal. We were the only ones around. We came upon a old guy in a Toyota Landcruiser stuck in a flooded creek. He asked for a ride back towards town so I said sure. My buddy got in the back seat and let this guy in the front. Then I noticed he had a .30 cal ammo box and on top of he laid a handgun. My buddy in the back couldn't see the gun. As we drove back towards town I was pretty nervous. It was about this time that Charles Manson was running around the area. Anyway the guy told me he was working an old mine in the hills called the Honest Abe Mine. I was really glad when we dropped him off at a house just outside Lone Pine. I always wondered where that mine was and what he was carrying in the ammo box.
That's what I had planned for my wife and I to have been doing when I retired back in 2009. But her still being too young to retire she didn't want to quit her job and live off my retirement fund and travel.
In January she'll be 61 and hopefully she'll retire when she's 62 and then maybe we can finally travel. That's if I am physically able to...
You kids keep having fun and I'll be here watching be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗
Great video! Can't wait to go there! Hugs to you both!
You guys are the bomb, you make everything seem so easy that’s why I love your videos 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I'm with you, Kristy……Go Auburn!!!
We stayed at a campground on the south side of town in October 2019. We love the museum. But the Alabama Hills area was a real find. It’s almost magical. It’s definitely on our list to go back and visit. We also enjoyed the road up to Mount Whitney. We ate at the Whitney Portal Store store while there. Had one of the best BLT sandwiches we’ve ever eaten, albeit the most expensive at around $12!
We spent most of last week there. We returned home Thanksgiving day because of the winds. Wish we would have seen you.
I always enjoy your videos!
It's a shame you didn't see catgphoto from Instagram and she has other sites, she is a full time truck camper and she was there at the same time, she does alot of hiking and photography. I'm sure you would enjoy her site and I'm sure you have many you follow but she is worth it and her utube is fantastic..I was at Alabama Hills for the 4th of july..great post...
Long,Long trailer. We used to have movies at school when I was in grade school in the 60s. The 8th graders sold us soda and popcorn to raise money for their 8th grade trip. Long, long trailer is one of the funniest movies we had. I'm sure that kind of thing is a big no no now, but life was free and easy in the swinging sixties.
My wife's mother grew up in Lone Pine. We've talked about going out there some day. Taking our Camper on a cross country voyage would be really cool. I didn't think this would be an option. Thanks.
We so hope to get there soon. Quartzite first.
Thanks for sharing looks like a cool place to visit.
Thank you for sharing this. It is now on our list.
War Eagle, Kristy! I love the old-school Aubie tee.
Awesome, thanks for sharing
Broke a brake wire there and found that the local hardware store has nothing. Bought a bit of wire and wire caps of all things. Got her done. Old telephone guys rule!
Awesome story, Brian!
I have a house in Lone Pine. Great fishing.
Sounds awesome. We are definitely checking it out.
Thanks!
Definitely on my bucket list!
Camping with friends is the best fun.
Also the museum looked like it would be a great visit.
Another great vid. Thx.
I drool and have pangs of jealousy when I see how beautiful it is out west. My wife and I live in the southeastern U.S. in Charlotte, NC. I would LOVE to travel west and see more of this beautiful country, but camping for three nights in a row is her limit. After this COVID thing is over I'm going to find a guy friend that wants to take several weeks and travel the country with me. Until then I'll just keep watching your videos. :-)
The Alabama Hills Cafe has the best breakfast in Lone Pine. Try the chicken fried steak! :-)
Next time come in september or october and a little north of Lone Pine you ll find the acces to White Mountains and the Bristlecone NM. Its the nearest to Mars you can find on earth and the old pines are outstanding.
Well done once more.
Nice. Thanks for sharing. Have you tried All Trails app? I find it to be fairly comprehensive and maps can be downloaded.
Alabama Hills during the Iron Bowl?
Putting it on my list, thanks guys.
Danny is from Alabama. Roll tide roll! Lynn and Danny
LOL...sounds like you were going to say that Alabama 'won one for the Nicker (Nick Saban)", but my guess is that you rethought it after listening to how it sounded in the edit room...Not sure if anyone else caught that! Keep up the good work!
War Eagle always!
looks like a great place. keep that long long honeymoon going!
Yep, the "Ahills" are a jewel destination. We were there for the first time in May. I'm going back soon with our RZR to explore more of the trails. Nice episode, good drone shots.
I can’t wait for Covid to be over so I can travel again and boondock! Stuck in stationary mode at a seasonal campground until then on Vancouver Island.
Great area, we are parked in Bishop at RV park, came to this area on purpose.
Just missed you guys. We were there the week before.
