I've seen this movie so many times and somehow never caught that. That's friggin hilarious 😂
With the rise of the internet, this character and arguably the whole movie aged so well.
Like, I can't even count how many people like Hal I've seen both online and in real life.
Especially now that Queen E is dead, it’s aged even better.
To me Hal was that guy you knew at college or at work who thought they were the good guy when they aren't and try to make people think they are better than the other person when they fail to see their mistake or being able to give back

I read on the internet that the way he accepted Megamind's farce of being his space dad later in the story implies that he has no parental/father figure, so maybe that's why he's like that. It's pretty sad, since in the training sequence with space dad he seems genuinely happy, just to later be furious when finding out that it was Megamind all along.

It's a touch of genius that Hal's first line is mocking Roxanne's writing. It shows that the problem isn't just Roxanne not liking him---he doesn't actually like Roxanne either. He's just infatuated with the fantasy of her.
I love it when the villain is a goof no one takes seriously and then becomes the biggest threat possible. I wish films had more villains like that.

I sorta feel bad for Al since the entire premise behind him was being a nerdy, awkward guy who never really accomplished anything, but overall they really nailed the type of guy he's supposed to be, and how he never really addresses the root of his problems as "he himself". Al might actually be the only main character that through the movie does not learn anything to overcome his personal issues: Metro Man's lack of responsibility during his whole life, Roxanne's judgemental behaviour towards others, and Megamind being too stuck in his past and busy with his antics to ever grow up as a person, everybody in the end becomes a better person except him, or at least he's not shown to.

I love how Roxanne's eyes slightly widen upon hearing his creepiness. The first night scene with him still "normal" is probably the moment she realizes how unhealthy and borderline dangerous the situation is.
Honestly it takes on a creepier aspect when you take into account that he thinks Metroman is dead. By all accounts he could have been planning on doing anything because now he doesn’t have to worry about Metroman coming for him if he did

it's a shame. maybe not a romantic relationship, but i could see hal being like the chill, reliable nerdy friend and comic relief sidekick character to roxanne if he went to therapy instead if acting on his possessive, sociopathic creep tendencies.

I just realized: I actually kinda want a sequel to Megamind where Hal learns how to stop being a jerk and a loser. But not in an easy or cliche way, but a realistic one. The story shouldn't be about him finding love or whatever, but more about gaining some self awareness and growth. There are probably a lot of people out there like him, and a lot of times they feel too far gone, but we need a lil bit of hope. That story might be too dark, and I don't know how to make it fun. But there's gotta be a way.
As someone who used to be in Hal's shoes for years and only lately realised this would only keep me in eternal misery and loneliness, I would've appreciated any movie animated or not with that same plot when I was deep in my "NiceGuy" and 0 self confidence years. It would've helped me improve way earlier.

every time he tries to flirt, he's very in her face, or when he's trying to get her to go get coffee, he is slow-walking. trying to manipulate her to walk with him. or whenever she tries to get away, he moves with her to try and keep her in one place.
maybe not body language per say, but i liked the detail.

You can clearly tell Hal is desperate for Roxanne and has no self confidence at all. Going after the same woman over and over again, lying to her face in an attempt to impress her and beating himself up over his issues instead of focusing on a way to improve his living situation. After you gain self confidence, you start to not really care if you can get a date or not and you're not as desperate as you were before
