I was going down a typical star wars rabbit hole (i see the irony in using that term too) when i saw some people debating that star wars is happening in the matrix and the comparisons of the clone wars (people against machines and in a way a third party of duplicates after anarchy (agent smith/the clone troopers). I re-watched aotc and matrix and sure enough matt doran (mouse was sleezebaggano/deathsticks guy) and Fiona Johnson (girl in red dress) were there. Also ironic both movies dealt with The One or Chosen One who could bend the will of things to their desire (neo could defy the artificial structure of the matrix more than any other and Anakin could do the same with the force)

Over 20 years later, many subsequent world events and societal changes still seem very misaligned, artificial, and idiosyncratic - very similar to what's the described in the initial Morpheus and Neo conversation. That movie has more resonance now than it did back then, and even then it was still the biggest thing in the world. I love your videos, Minty!

I honestly can't picture Will Smith as Neo, so I think he made a good call, even though Will Wild West was awful. This was Keanu Reeves big break and I can't picture The Matrix without him.
‘Wild West’ is one of the worst movies that I’ve ever seen and I have seen many. Yet, if I was in a situation where I absolutely had to chose between it and ‘Citizen Kane’ ............... yep, ‘Wild West’ it is. Oh my, ‘Citizen Kane’ should at the top of lists that are for most boring movies ever made (instead of at the top of the most perfect movies ever made). It took me seven tries over a 20 year time span to watch all of it!!! Then, I wanted that time back.
I wrote a philosophy midterm on this movie, revolving around Rene Descartes I think therefore I am philosophy, and expanding upon his evil genius puppet master pulling our strings. Touched on some symbolism as well, such as when Neo truly awakes, he goes up into the light, as if ascending this plane to another, etc. Nailed it too

The Matrix is one of my favorite movies of all time. Even aside from the special effects which are impressive, the message and storyline resonated with people. I agree with you about the endless parodies on the bullet time effect and I'm glad that came to an end, but the effects itself still look great in the movie. It's hard to believe it's 21 years old. Yikes, I was 21 when I saw it.

This is one of the MANY movies that I feel shouldn't have had sequels. This movie would be held in much higher regard if there weren't the sequels to muddy up it's legacy, and I don't even hate the sequels as much as other people do.
the biggest issue with some of the sequels is the adaption of cgi which is just ludicrous in some scenes....(like when neo is fighting unlimited agents in the courtyard, it is just SO poorly done). I started watching the old Bewitched tv show and their practical effects are brilliant compared to the cgi in the sequels.
My problem with the sequels is the fact they took an amazing lore and executed so poorly. The other two movies could have had the same nuance as the first one but it was just all action at that part. It's a problem with a lot of sequels. People love explosions...so lets give that to them instead.

After all the excellent mind bending ideas in the ‘Matrix’, it switched to less mind bending reality and more .....ok, let’s give them lots of the usual blow-em up stuff. So very disappointing!!! Dear Minty, first of all, I’m a huge fan of your work. I’d like to let you know about 2 more things about this movie (it’s actually my #1 movie of all time). 1. The Bullet-Time effect was first used in Mexico during 1990. It was created for a government’s TV spot. The idea of the TV spot was to show reality (economy) being stopped. Unfortunately it’s impossible now to find that TV spot, but I saw it during that time since I am a Mexican citizen, old enough to have watched it aired on national television. During the spot, there was an scene where a girl is sitting on a fountain while several doves starts to fly. Then, everything stops while the camera moves throughout the scene (then the narrator says: “Mexico can not stop”). Additional source: Acclaimed video game director Hideo Kojima once said during an interview that the Bullet-Time effect was created in Mexico (he also used the effect in his critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 2 video game, after The Matrix was released.) 2. The Matrix story is actually an allegory for spiritual enlightenment. If you watch the movie under this particular point of view, I can assure you will find it very interesting, and with a deeper meaning. Additional hint #1: Hugo Weaving says during an interview in the film’s Behind The Scenes documentary that Smith is actually Ego itself. The sequels maintains this point of view. Additional hint #2: The main theme for the entire trilogy, called “Navras”, contains fragments from the ancient Hindu book “The Bhagavad Gita”, which is about spiritual enlightenment -and it even features traditional Hindu musical instruments. It's the difference between a character actor and a leading man. A character actor creates the persona to fit the role. A leading man just puts themselves into the role. Character acting is much tougher - and when it misses it can miss hard. Gary Oldman is amazing, but misses from time to time.

I remember when this movie came out IT WAS EVERYWHERE even in my country. I remember my and my friends who were kids back then we tried to use a normal camera to do the bullet time thingy and the slow motion thingy WITHOUT computers too because we didn't even know how to use one back then! Man amazing stuff.
"Bullet Time" is actually called 'time slice' and was created a couple of years earlier by a school teacher and his class. It was then used in a film clip 1985 . Matrix only modified the set-up, renamed it and lied for the publicity.
I agree!!! He was just getting into his own when that terrible on-set accidental shooting took place. Just like his father; Bruce Lee, he died before his (cult classic) very successful ‘hit’ movie was premiered.

Tron, however, was 1982 and didn't have any of the elements common to The Matrix, Dark City, 13th Floor, or eXistenZ. There were several other films in the 90s as well that touched on virtual reality that didn't really go this route, like Johnny Mnemonic or Disclosure. I'd say Strange Days probably straddles the line as there's no actual virtual world, but there is a question as to what's real. I remember in 1999 thinking this movie would be a nice appetizer before The Phantom Menace released. Turns out The Matrix was the far better movie and held up much better as well.
The best line in the film is Lawrence Fishburne's quiet "You think that's air you're breathing?" When all the flash and thunder of the amazing visuals and masterfully choreographed action scenes is removed, that little question persists.
I saw it twice in the theater, once with my wife and once with my brother. Both times people cheered during the Fishburne/ Reeves training fight scene. Amazing movie!

Dark City is an awesome movie, I remember watching it on HBO many years ago when I was younger. Also, another good movie similar to Dark City is Gattaga. Except the message in Gattaga isn't "Some Evil is hiding the truth from us." But more along the lines of classifying people based on their history, up bringing, and physical defects from birth. In other words, Discrimination. Because not being born "perfect" and being born with defects means you're not able to get a job better than being a janitor. :)
Thanks for all the nice info and again a great piece Minty. My brother and I enjoyed the movie at the time as well as its occasional trilogy runs. We were also avid FPS gamers and loved ID for Doom and its help with Quake. While watching the movie during the Bullet Scene we instantly noticed the visual effect from the Railgun in Quake 2. Although there may not be any legitimate reference to this visual to Quake 2, it was where we first saw it. As far as the sound I cannot remember if its the same BUT just a fun fact and trip down memory lane for FPS gamers that loved that era.

Two inspirations from the Matrix that isn’t listed. Johnny Mnemonic which was Reeves first dabble in cyberpunk action and his Neo character is so close to Johnny Mnemonic. And finally The whole Giant computer and virtual world was done in Doctor Who(the Deadly Assasin). From 1976 till 1989, the series talks a lot about the Matrix. Then the 2005 revival, nothing of the Gallifreyan Computer is ever mentioned. Is it because the Wachowski brothers now copyrighted it???

The ‘Matrix’ gave the viewers absolutely mind bending ideas and thought provoking visuals. The ‘Wild, Wild West’ had such good actors (Will Smith and Kevin Kline), but the story just became too ludicrous. That Dr. Loveless character was just plain pathetic, as was a lot of the story line. What a mess that movie turned out to be. I haven’t met a single person who liked it.
When I first saw The Matrix, I thought it reminded me of an episode of Red Dwarf called Back To Reality. Where the Red Dwarf crew die, only to wake up in a different world as completely different people. Being told the life they thought they lived was just a computer game.
I believe people now don't appreciate the impact The Matrix had when it was released. It was an absolute phenomenon.

This was one of those movies that I had to watch twice to really appreciate it and love it. 9.7/10 Great movie.

This is one of the MANY movies that I feel shouldn't have had sequels. This movie would be held in much higher regard if there weren't the sequels to muddy up it's legacy, and I don't even hate the sequels as much as other people do.
the biggest issue with some of the sequels is the adaption of cgi which is just ludicrous in some scenes....(like when neo is fighting unlimited agents in the courtyard, it is just SO poorly done).
I started watching the old Bewitched tv show and their practical effects are brilliant compared to the cgi in the sequels.
@@muskokamike127 agreed, I actually still love the endless Smith fight other than those few bad shots.
My problem with the sequels is the fact they took an amazing lore and executed so poorly. The other two movies could have had the same nuance as the first one but it was just all action at that part. It's a problem with a lot of sequels. People love explosions...so lets give that to them instead.

After all the excellent mind bending ideas in the ‘Matrix’, it switched to less mind bending reality and more .....ok, let’s give them lots of the usual blow-em up stuff. So very disappointing!!! I thought that the sequels would involve more of the mysteriously controlling matrix patterns that would now want to stay hidden to defend themselves against ‘the one’. More cerebral and thought provoking movies.
Dear Minty, first of all, I’m a huge fan of your work.
I’d like to let you know about 2 more things about this movie (it’s actually my #1 movie of all time).
1. The Bullet-Time effect was first used in Mexico during 1990. It was created for a government’s TV spot. The idea of the TV spot was to show reality (economy) being stopped. Unfortunately it’s impossible now to find that TV spot, but I saw it during that time since I am a Mexican citizen, old enough to have watched it aired on national television. During the spot, there was an scene where a girl is sitting on a fountain while several doves starts to fly. Then, everything stops while the camera moves throughout the scene (then the narrator says: “Mexico can not stop”). Additional source: Acclaimed video game director Hideo Kojima once said during an interview that the Bullet-Time effect was created in Mexico (he also used the effect in his critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 2 video game, after The Matrix was released.)
2. The Matrix story is actually an allegory for spiritual enlightenment. If you watch the movie under this particular point of view, I can assure you will find it very interesting, and with a deeper meaning. Additional hint #1: Hugo Weaving says during an interview in the film’s Behind The Scenes documentary that Smith is actually Ego itself. The sequels maintains this point of view. Additional hint #2: The main theme for the entire trilogy, called “Navras”, contains fragments from the ancient Hindu book “The Bhagavad Gita”, which is about spiritual enlightenment -and it even features traditional Hindu musical instruments.

It's the difference between a character actor and a leading man. A character actor creates the persona to fit the role. A leading man just puts themselves into the role. Character acting is much tougher - and when it misses it can miss hard. Gary Oldman is amazing, but misses from time to time.

I remember when this movie came out IT WAS EVERYWHERE even in my country. I remember my and my friends who were kids back then we tried to use a normal camera to do the bullet time thingy and the slow motion thingy WITHOUT computers too because we didn't even know how to use one back then! Man amazing stuff.
"Bullet Time" is actually called 'time slice' and was created a couple of years earlier by a school teacher and his class. It was then used in a film clip 1985 . Matrix only modified the set-up, renamed it and lied for the publicity.
The effect was used in the Lost In Space movie a year before The Matrix came out

I agree!!! He was just getting into his own when that terrible on-set accidental shooting took place. Just like his father; Bruce Lee, he died before his (cult classic) very successful ‘hit’ movie was premiered.

He was talking about the trend in the late 90s of movies about people being in virtual or unreal worlds and getting out or not knowing what constitutes reality. One he didn't mention was eXistenZ. Tron, however, was 1982 and didn't have any of the elements common to The Matrix, Dark City, 13th Floor, or eXistenZ. There were several other films in the 90s as well that touched on virtual reality that didn't really go this route, like Johnny Mnemonic or Disclosure. I'd say Strange Days probably straddles the line as there's no actual virtual world, but there is a question as to what's real.

I remember in 1999 thinking this movie would be a nice appetizer before The Phantom Menace released. Turns out The Matrix was the far better movie and held up much better as well.
The best line in the film is Lawrence Fishburne's quiet "You think that's air you're breathing?"
When all the flash and thunder of the amazing visuals and masterfully choreographed action scenes is removed, that little question persists.

The Matrix is a classic. One of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. I went to see it at the cinema in 1999.
I saw it twice in the theater, once with my wife and once with my brother. Both times people cheered during the Fishburne/ Reeves training fight scene. Amazing movie!

Dark City is an awesome movie, I remember watching it on HBO many years ago when I was younger. Also, another good movie similar to Dark City is Gattaga. Except the message in Gattaga isn't "Some Evil is hiding the truth from us." But more along the lines of classifying people based on their history, up bringing, and physical defects from birth. In other words, Discrimination. Because not being born "perfect" and being born with defects means you're not able to get a job better than being a janitor. :)

Thanks for all the nice info and again a great piece Minty. My brother and I enjoyed the movie at the time as well as its occasional trilogy runs. We were also avid FPS gamers and loved ID for Doom and its help with Quake. While watching the movie during the Bullet Scene we instantly noticed the visual effect from the Railgun in Quake 2. Although there may not be any legitimate reference to this visual to Quake 2, it was where we first saw it. As far as the sound I cannot remember if its the same BUT just a fun fact and trip down memory lane for FPS gamers that loved that era.
Love the content of your show start off everyday with it even if it's a rerun keep up the good work it's informative and funny , can't wait to see what classic movie you pick next .

Johnny Mnemonic which was Reeves first dabble in cyberpunk action and his Neo character is so close to Johnny Mnemonic.
And finally The whole Giant computer and virtual world was done in Doctor Who(the Deadly Assasin). From 1976 till 1989, the series talks a lot about the Matrix.
Then the 2005 revival, nothing of the Gallifreyan Computer is ever mentioned.
Is it because the Wachowski brothers now copyrighted it???

reloaded was good...not earth shattering great like the first...but then revolutions not quite as good...great ideas and vision though...execution meh...the original has that intense sense of urgency

The ‘Matrix’ gave the viewers absolutely mind bending ideas and thought provoking visuals. The ‘Wild, Wild West’ had such good actors (Will Smith and Kevin Kline), but the story just became too ludicrous. That Dr. Loveless character was just plain pathetic, as was a lot of the story line. What a mess that movie turned out to be. I haven’t met a single person who liked it.

When I first saw The Matrix, I thought it reminded me of an episode of Red Dwarf called Back To Reality.
Where the Red Dwarf crew die, only to wake up in a different world as completely different people. Being told the life they thought they lived was just a computer game.
