As somebody who came years after the end of British and American mainline and short line steam, I've always been fascinated by the British Southern Railroad Pacifics. Their design features are some of the most unusual I've ever seen and Oliver Bulleid crossed lines in the design specs that I didn't even KNOW were possible. I even heard the original ones don't produce any hammer blow to the track.
As usual this video popped up and I watched it from start to finish. I do so wish we had today's technology back then so that we could have recorded in much higher definition and at lower cost the end of an era. Thanks to those who did record these halcyon days of my youth. Thank you again.
Wow, really nice !, i saw many of the west country class shown as a wide eyed train spotter with my mates spending days over watching the main line at Woking ,my fav's were the flat tops[''Bude''Tavistock'Chard'] seeing the distant light & tell tale smoke pouring out, hurtling through at 120km,then getting home & ruling off the number in that fantastic thick glossy book of train numbers
1:07 This Famous Train Station Waterloo In London In England Was Opened In 1848 From The London And South Western Railway When The Southern Railway Took It Over In 1923 And Also British Railways Took It Over In 1948 Just After The Second World War Ended On May 8th 1945 And It's Bigger Than Paddington Station Which Is The Home Of The Great Western Railway. Towards the end of steam the brits are running their locomotives up to a 100 miles an hour if not more at times because they didn't care and just wanted their engines to go out in a blaze of glory
Its bizarre seeing working Locos like Blackmoor Vale on screen compared to her awaiting restoration at Bluebell Railway, as well as Sir Archibald Sinclair!! Brilliant compilation of footage, I'm miles away in Northern Ireland now but soon to return home to near Sheffield Park for a break. Nostalgia
