    Kev, if you have a somewhat dried out leather sweatband couldn’t you use a leather conditioner to help rehydrate it?

      They’re usually too far gone for that..when it’s cracked and flaking .like that? No. Usually the finish flakes off, and they crack,and it’s just not even a possibility.. just put a new, fresh leather band in there.
      You don’t want to put oils,waxes or lotions on the leather, there’s a finish there, and once you start breaking that finish,the dye underneath will start bleeding onto your skin and stuff..when you sweat, or it gets wet..I don’t suggest putting anything on the leather sweatband..not the side that touches your skin.. you don’t know what kind of leather it is, some of it is bonded, or painted, or raw or finished.
      The best best thing is wearing it, use your own body to keep the sweatband from being too dry. Wear it,and don’t keep it I storage for years without wearing it.. you have to wear your hat, and the oils and perspiration from your body will keep the hat fine.
      I understand wanting to keep the old sweatband for provenance etc, but it’s better to just change the band..that’s like $20-30. Don’t mess around with anything oily on the sweatband.
      I learned that lesson the hard way many years ago.
      There’s a clear coat on that leather, and those lotions deteriorate the finish and expose the leather underneath, that can cause the dye in the sweatband to bleed on your skin.
      I can understand wanting to keep an old sweatband for provenance,

    I think that my modern Akubra has a metal reed band. Is this likely?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  10 месяцев назад +1

      there’s a little piece of metal there sometimes to seal the seam,but I doubt it.. it would be something elastic like nylon

      @@KTGHATS It's probably the join in the nylon that I can see at the join in the sweatband then. Thanks

    Hey Kevin, what are your thoughts on storing hats in the boxes they come in? Any worries about acid free box vs regular cardboard?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  10 месяцев назад

      I haven’t seen any issues with old hats in boxes for 20 years or so
      I don’t think it’s an issue if it’s boxed correctly
