  • Todai-ji (東大寺 Eastern Great Temple) was built in the Nara period (710 - 794 AD) at the behest of Emperor Shomu. The temple was officially positioned as one of many state-established provincial temples. However, since the chief object of worship of the temple is Vairocana Buddha ("Buddha that shines throughout the world like the sun"), a magnificent temple was built to reflect this importance.
The Great Buddha Hall (大仏殿 Daibutsuden) houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana, known in Japanese as Daibutsu (大仏). The statue was consecrated in 752 AD but damaged and repaired several times in the following centuries. It was burned during the war in 1180 and 1567, and the current building is actually the third generation construction, which was built in the Edo period.

You don't realize how huge this structure is until you walk closer to it. That they built such a structure in the Nara period that still stands to this day is testament to the ingenuity and skill of the builders back then.

This tour is so cool! It’s videos and walks like this that make me really want to come visit. This temple is kind of mind blowing to me. I know so little about this history but it’s so beautiful and impressive that it’s made seemingly mostly out of wood. So grand and magnificent. Thanks for giving such a comprehensive history in the description as well. Much appreciated. - Henry

Yeah, at the very beginning look at the size comparison to the people next to just the doors. Then look at how huge the whole building is.

I'm just wondering they use the temple for religion worshiping ? because in other country, tourist is not allowed to make noise and respect to worshiper come to meditate. too much noise how to pray?

Christ means the light of God. The light of God is omnipresent. It's the light that lives in your heart, same as everyone else. "The Kingdom is within"-Jesus. Light of oneness. Shines everywhere. ✌️❤️

Salva nada.
