My husband has always insisted that the 'made in Thailand' DM's were inferior to the 'made in England' ones. I thought he was just being a shoe snob but it appears he is right. I really hate when he's right.
LOL! Why? Pride?
my name is helen and my last name starts with a d
The doc martens i have now fooled me. I thought they'd be good boots if made in England but they are crap . The leather upper is cracking up at the fold lines . Shouldn't happen. I'd allege that manufacturer sabotaged the leather deliberately by maybe exposing to high heat . I've had two other doc martens with exactly same condition . Other comments say the same stuff . Avoid doc martens, also avoid blundstone. For blundstone though they sabotage the sole .
@@michaelcorbidge7914 I had the same problem with both the made in Thailand & made in England boots, the made in England took longer to crack, however, using wonder balm and or mink oil before wearing them and a couple applications after, completely stopped the problem, the leather as received is too dry without conditioning and will crack no matter what, however when you soften the leather they will last just like vintage docs, I have had another pair since 1987
My gf also hates when I'm right XD
This has been a really interesting watch. I "graduated" into my first Made in England pair a few years ago and I had high expectations but the stitching ended up coming undone which had never happened in my many years of wearing Made in Thailand. So this has been interesting from a professionals perspective and i've really enjoyed watching the comparisons between the boots over the last few days.
Excuse me, are you going to introduce us to your cat or what..?
I know! Beautiful wee Cornish Rex!
He did, it’s called Pussy Galore
He will cut it in half next week.

Oh dear 🙀
This video series is a blessing, this is some very interesting information on the technical aspect of Dr Martens products where we only find aesthetic/fashion videos on RUclips.
So you're the JerryRigEverything of boots and leather goods huh? I'm in.
shekels ha ha I wish! zack is a close friend of mine though so he definitely inspired this whole cutting open/review series
@@RoseAnvil idc keep doing it
Not bought DM's for over 10 years, at least they still make good boots but you gotta pay for it. Interested in Solovair review as they are made down the road from me
Nrthn Munky So are the made in England’s aren’t they?
@@oxfordrc1613 Yep, Northamptonshire
send him a pair
Hi Nrthn Munky. I'm in Wollaston, where abouts are you?
Really Rose Anvil had already decided he didn't like the Thai boot before he cut one open, he doesn't emphasise the difference between poorly made and not as well made. The Thai boot does not suck, it's a perfectly good boot for its' price. If it did suck they wouldn't sell the Made in England boot. Rose Anvil is effectively holding the Asian made boot to a standard that's too high for its' price. It's like saying a BMW 3-series sucks because it's not a Rolls Royce.
I've sent these videos my friends who wear docs, can't wait to see how the Solovair compares as they helped produce the doc martens boots at one point.
My docs in high school had dr. Martens by solovair on the back loop. Brings back memories
I never owned a par but I remember back in the day the yellow tag behind the boot saying solovair.
Yesssss, please do Solovair! I'm inbetween Made in England vs SoloAir and have months to go before I make a decision on one of these.
Love your videos and looking forward to future videos from this series!
I was torn too, but I went ahead and got the Made in England 1460’s for the look :P
I knew they were better than Thai ones and I thought they looked better than solovairs
solovair brother
Solovair are great boots, but they’ll just never be Docs I’m afraid.
Hope your channel grows A LOT! Because you have a lot to teaches us about your craft and you have a natural gift for it. Thank you and keep it up!
Red Wing tear down and Timberland would be great! I've had the 6-inch classic Timbs for a while and they definitley feel tough if a bit uncomfortable.
I used your break in technique on a pair of Red Wings that I've never been able to break in enough to be comfortable and oh my god it's fantastic. They've gone from hard to wear all day to possibly my most comfortable shoe. It's amazing it.
They are drastically darker than they were pre-treatment, from a rich red/brown to almost black. (I used Obenauf's Leather Oil instead of mink oil, as liquid mink oil is hard to find here.) I've worn them for about a week and it does look like the oil will slowly evaporate and some of that red will come back, which I'm happy with.
Super awesome tip!
I’m down with chopping up the red wings. They’re sooooo frickin heavy. Hahaha and the dad comment, I resisted commenting about that but it did bother me.
Phil Meeks ha ha my dad literally called me after this video and got mad at me for cutting towards myself 😂
Very informative. Looking forward to the rest of the series. It's an expensive endeavor as you say. I'm sure there would be viewers willing to contribute to the cost of your boot 'deconstructing' if you were to set up a Patreon or similar. I certainly would.
You should do a tear down with a pair of Chippewa or Solovair boots just see how well there made and materials used.
You had me waiting for this for way too long!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Really looking forward to the solovair video!
Some of the original DMs and Solovair plain welt boots (no yellow stitching)have Goodyear welts that have hidden stitching. As I think I previously mentioned they were never premium quality but used to be cheap in the 70s and 80s so we’re not so harshly judged.
Can you please also talk about new Vegan version of them
I think it will be interesting comparison
This has me intrigued...
The Tall Girl +
This is interesting. But I think a wear test would be a good feature if it was to be done. Vegan leather v real leather. I'm interested.
A thing I noticed was that their sizing were like 2 times smaller than regular docs.
yes cut open a vegan :P
I just ordered a pair of Redback boots for work a few days ago. So yes, please do a Redback tear down. I would love to see it!
Great video, I have both the normal Doc Martens 1490 and the Made in England Doc Martens 1490 and I can only say that the Made in England boots are way better in terms of quality. I do however prefer the looks of the cheap Doc Martens. :)
You are right about doc martens not having an insole but I always save them from my sports sneakers that have removable ones and recycle them into other shoes, including my doc martens.
I'm a big fan of the Made In England boots but, I got a pair of standard 1460 DMs in Gaucho/Crazy Horse about 5yrs ago purely for the colour. Look a little like the Vintage ones you have there have the standard sole pattern. I swear they're better quality than the standard corrected leather fellows, certainly more comfortable.
thanks for going into this much detail. i went to replace my pair of made in england docs and was extremely disappointed in the decline in quality even within the "prestige" line. the leather is so much thinner than my pair from 2008-ish. i'm very much looking forward to see how the solovair compares; i think that'll be deciding factor in me purchasing one.
Well, people want lighter and less hot boots.
Can’t believe you’re at almost 300k subs. Amazing.
Thumbs up for the Devon Rex. The cat you get, when you really want a dog.
Made the mistake of working roofing, up and down ladders with shingle bundle on shoulder, in Doc Martins, no shank - pop, the sole was done. Took forever to get replacement. Never did that again - not a work boot- just comfortable walking boot.
Man, this channel grew fast. No wonder, such good quality can't be neglected.
Please buy and wear another pair of made in England doc 😭 I’m really curious about if it’s worth it compared to the regular one
I have had my made in England boots for over a year now, I wear them almost daily and they still look like new, completely worth paying the extra for them. For anyone hesitating, don't, honestly don't waste your money on anything else, GET MADE IN ENGLAND'S!
Callum Daniel yeah man I’m planning on getting one for sure. But I must say if the regular smooth leather is on sale,it’s not a bad deal either. I got mine for about three years now,got it for about $100. Travel with them around the world, don’t care about rain or snow. Yet they still don’t look bad at all 👌
@@cd7246 RUBBISH BOOTS for 2-3 weeks ..tread gone and holes everywhere !
I am glad I joined this cutting-boots-in-half-journey
Ouch!!!!!!!!!!! That hurts….but well done 👍 I’ve still got a pair I bought in 1979…a bit knackered now but I love em……🥰
you don't introduce that cat and you'll jinx your channel...cats rule the interwebs!
I just got my first pair of Docs, and googling them led me to this channel...it hurts to see these boots I already like so much getting torn apart, haha, but these videos are super informative and interesting.
Same lol I was like I can’t watch this lol
Just get solovairs. Same type style for cheaper with better quality.
Proud of you!! Congrats on the new subscribers I love this channel I lowkey wanna work with leather now
yes! i wanna see those solovairs
Twisted X boots. That's what I swear by for work. So comfortable and resilient.
waiting on the solovair video! i got a pair of the black greasy 8 solovairs few days ago and their way better than the dr martens made in thai that i had, would you recommend using the oil to break in on these too?
Hope to see the Redwing and Timberland boot comparisons! Also, kitty is cool to help with your videos (s/he's adorable)!
Thanks! Timberlands are coming soon!
I recently bought a pair of the Dr. Martens 1460 Panel Dockyard +Ventile (26875001) in black, they are a made in england special edition. I bought them in EU45/UK10 (the biggest i could still find) they almost fit perfectly, they are a bit tight but i have only tried them on like 2 times at home so far, and i have also not broken them in yet in case i decide to sell them because of the this problem. It is my first pair of footwear that i bought on my own with my own money, and i bought it because i wanted a pair of boots. I liked the look of Dr Martens and the look of this particular pair of boots and the materials used to make them were also looking good. Im no expert in materials or manufactoring, but they look and feel well made and high quality.
I would love a review about them (their materials and build quality etc) with maybe even cutting them in half like you did with other Docs in your videos.
But more importantly i would love to know if the "size problem" i have goes away when breaking them in or if there is another way of solving it (other than getting a larger size, since that seems to not be possible anymore).
I bought mine from someone for like 40$ and now I learned they're vintage! and now i'm super proud of them.
I'd love to see a video about how to take care of these boots so that they last forever
17k subscribers. and now today you have nearly 400k. wow its cool to go back and see this kind of stuff
I’ve been on the fence about buying DM boots, wasn’t sure if the quality/cost was there compared to others. Then I heard of Solvair so I might wait to make my decision if you do a Solvair video.
Glad to see your channel blowing up!
I love the vintage out of all of them
Lol when you're one of the "dad's" but are probably younger than him
I'll be watching for those nicee boots vids👀👀
I constantly get lost in relation to the which boot is being talked about ...." this boot" " this boot" " "this boot"
i kinda hope he tell us which is which but hey hopefully he did that on future video
Someone must have ADHD. Short attention span. Figures. A wiseman once said. When you are doing something. Anything. Pay attention. Plonk.
What a beautiful devon rex!!! My friend has one and they're so soft!!! I'm so happy to see you dissect other products now!!! God way to transition to other things.
“Tis but a flesh wound!” ~Dr. Marten Boot
Would love to see the Timberlands cut away, and also, not sure if you already have one- a video on which boots you would recommend for quality leather and construction? Thank you for doing these!
Thanks for the video! Now waiting for the Solovair boots!
i just got them in the mail!
I was so waiting for this. Keep them coming, please.
I'm really excited to see your breaking in process that you mentioned in the other video.
I believe this is the video

@@mattmiller4778 Thanks! I don't know how I missed that.
Yyoooo yes please do a redwing. I would prefer a wolverine 1000 mile boot tear down but redwing sounds good too
Thumbs up for RUclips.. But thumbs down in my heart
It seems you are getting almost 1000 subscribers per day now. I was wondering if you with break 50k by New Year’s, and you’ve already done it! Congratulations! 🏅
Omg when the cat came in the picture i thought it was someones arm
So, bottom line is that the welt is super STRONG! Long live Dr Mar
I have a New Balance made in England, it’s about 3 times the price of similar range of shoes made in Asia, but the quality is really impeccable, you can see fine craftsmanship even in the tiniest details. Two main reasons probably is thar the materials used in England are of higher quality and they were hand made. It’s pricey but it’s gonna last longer. Im keeping my hopes high for this Doc Martens made in Endland. Hope it wont be a disappointing experience.
This cutaway examination and comparison really needed to happen. Look out, boot companies.
Yes! Please do the timberland, comparable to the DMs. They have a leather boot with rubber sole. Thanks again for doing this! It's so interesting and incredible! I have worn docs my whole life. First pair of docs were 6 hole 101s, and they lasted me from (1989 made in England) 13-22. Only because my foot grew. Then a special edition Pascal from 25-30. They wore out fast. The top part. So now I wanted to get another pair and I'm watching this video to help me decide! So comprehensive! So gutsy! Love it!💗
NEVER PUSH THE CAT OUT OF THE SHOT AGAIN :3
Lol same! I'm amazed he doesn't realise the value of a cat's arse obscuring the frame.
@@JagoffCitizen excactly !
I have a cheap ones made in Vietam i think, they have 7 years of abuse and they look mint, also they stay confortable to wear.
Great video... THanks... now 20K and the Cat gets it next :)
Thank you so mush! I bought my first dr martens pair! And I choose “made in England”
Pretty excited for the redwings and timberlands. I have 8 pairs of RW in my collection. So it’ll be wonderful to see such comparisons.
Hi yes, the good old days when you didn't have the band saw. Lol I actually remember watching this video way back.
Looking at a pretty nice pair of vintage doc martens locally on Facebook right now I can't remember if I should buy them or not. Lol
I’ve been wearing DM’s since about 1990 (I’m in the UK) and then DMs were the boots and for me shoes to have but... we always new the ones that came before were better. When my school shoes were DM’s, by choice, I’d buy the older kids, worn in DMs, from them
Got tricked by purchasing the “Made In England” DM’s. I knew immediately that they were not what they were years ago. Very uncomfortable, etc... I’m done with the brand.
Do the 6 inch premium Timberlands, and next do a pair of Red Wings!
You should try to put them back together Maybe even mix and match
Wolverine vs Red Wing vs Thorogood's. With Wolverine, specifically the 1000 mile boot. I guess that would be comparable to the Iron Ranger from Red Wing and you could company those with a Thursday Boot Company Captain as well
Made in England is great but BOBBER made in your shop is even better..... Can't wait for more uploads mate😜
What's with the recent obsession with cutting Dr. Martens in half?
He's just trying to compare the durability and construction quality between them but It would be too expensive for a small channel to just spend 500 euros for boots to destroy. He also made videos comparing the leathers.
Cause people want to see
Ppl wanna see what they r buying. I'd never buy that foam crap if i knew about it
Blundstone boots 501 classic Australian rough and classy boots. Please compare the Chinese factory to the aussie version. Massive challenge and everyone has an opinion.
Blundstone would happily supply a pair
I have some dr martins combs... And they've lasted me 5 years so far... And Ive gone to punk shows... Hiked through woods.. Walked through snow and rain... And they're made from canvas or something
great video - please keep them coming. The welt is so tough to pull from the sole because they are not glued on, but melted with a very hot blade and pushed together with rollers while still hot and soft. So the 2 pieces of PVC actually become 1.
If You can, please make a video of cutting in half Doctor Martens Jadon boot! The ones with the thick sole, I'm interested what's in it!
Thanks for letting us know about the Thai boots. I picked up a cheap pair of DMs and idk my gut said dont keep em.
In the early 90s I took apart a pair of docs and there was a steel shank in them.
I've had the same pair of whites boots for 23 years, even after 4 resoles you can't beat them. I would love to see a set of those dissected.
You should check out Solovair. They're the original Dr. Martens producers, and when Dr. Martens left them they continued making similar boots in their own name. I believe they will be even higher quality, and they're also made in England.
Yes please, please, PLEASE do this with Red Wings now! Fascinating stuff.
Can't wait for the Redwing & timberland deconstructions . Your friend (4:10) wants to know how they compare too . Guess it's just curiosity cause I don't think they make his/her size.
My Gen-x daughter loved these boots. Our millinial kids loved them and now our Gen-Z granddaughter loves them!
The steel toe cap Docs are made with a much thicker leather and in the UK are cheaper because there is no 20% VAT on safety items. There is a difference in quality of construction too IMO.
You could also buy used shoes or boots on Ebay from a certain brand for cheaper, then open those. Money saving tip.
A Thursday boot company boot would be interesting to see deconstructed.
my birthday video...two years ago.lol best videos on youtube for boots
lol mate thanks for the shoutout, great video too, my better half owned a pair of these for years and loves them
Would be very interesting to compare with some Timberland 6 inch premium boots. They should be about the same price as the made in England Docs.
I've got the English made 1460s but am strongly considering Red Wing Iron Rangers.
I live in western Montana. Big logging country. When the day is done, and the Whites come off, most folks slip on chelsea styled Georgia Boot low quarters. They are comfy and able to do duty in town and for limited trekking around the homestead. We wear them everywhere but the shower. It would be nice to see what we actually get for our hard-earned $$s, and if there is a better choice slip-on out there with lug sole and shank.
--Thankx 🐴
Idk man I’ve had a pair of 1460’s made in Thailand for 6 years and they still look and feel great. I think it just comes down to the person and how they wear and treat the leather.
There was not a problem with the leather. It was the poor quality of the welt, and the nasty foam in the sole that is the deal breaker. Even the present day DMs from England kick the Thai ones into the bin. By vintage DMs for best quality.
No idea how I came to your channel but I certainly appreciate it 👍
RM Williams boots 🥾, scarpa, zanberlan, red wing, 1000 mile, Wolverine, now you got a sub and a few varieties
Yes would love to see you do the same series but with the iconic Timberland 6inch boot
Haha I say the same thing " STOP cutting toward yourself " !😂 Congregations on the success of your channel and nice video!💯🐷
Would love to see some Canadian boots reviewed. Maybe the "Canadian Iron Rangers!" The WM. Moorby 2817?!
First, awesome video! Good to see what they are doing with these!
I must have won the coin toss with the Asian boots. I have a pair of the 1490's and have had no issues. I do agree though that they are slightly larger than the MIE and had no break in period to speak of. Two years in and the soles are still good.
The ones that really surprised me were the Winch Industrial boots. Also Two years old, not expensive and live at industrial sites (power plants, paper mills etc..). Fantastic durability with proper maintenance. Needless to say, I wear these the most (work....).
Looking forward to the Solovair videos. This will steer my next purchase.
Fun channel. Glad it's growing.
