@@RoseAnvil Which version of boot was this? Ive been after a nice 90s vintage 1460 and have not found anything even close to how nice these looked haha this hurt my soul..
The blueing is on the inside of the leather. If you look closely tou can see a strip of blue in the cross section. The reason it shows on the tongue is because they split the leather in half to make it thinner and more comfortable for the tongue, thus exposing the blueing of the leather. Good question!

Having worn DMs almost all my life, I can tell you that the original Made in England boots were certainly much better than today’s Eastern ones but still were not brilliant quality. They were certainly very fashionable but they were also quite inexpensive back in the late 70s early 80s so people probably didn’t judge them so harshly ( the standard boots cost about £20 back then and I even bought a pair of steel toe DMs for £10 in 1986 ). I cried watching you cut into the vintage boots, I miss my old pair that were exactly like those. But I was really interested in seeing what was inside.
Just bought some beat up old docs and I'm trying to check their age. Do you know any standout things you can look at to tell you what era they are from?
I love wearing Dr Marten boots as a schoolboy in highschool and as a university student also. Between the years 1982 to 1992. Seeing this content makes me want to purchase and wear Dr Martens again.
Great video, I would also love to see a video about the different kinds of leather or maybe a video where you take apart and compare a pair of red wings.
Also, pretty sure that brown leather was called Crazy horse. You can tell if it is by pressing fingers along the inside of the boot and seeing the outer brown leather fade lighter (if that makes sense).
Sooo i really enjoyed hearing about the quality in dr martens but now the question is: what kind of shoes do you recommend? Maybe similar style but good quality would be great
I got my first pair in 1976 and they are definitely different now to when I was a kid. Im in England and they were only made here then. Btw the 90's are definitely not long enough ago to be vintage haha!

They look like the ones I first bought when I was in high school back in 1995. I miss those boots and I never should have thrown them away. Back then I never ever dreamed they'd be made in freakin China.
How long should the sole of the shoe last, before getting into the honeycomb soul ? I buy a new pair every 2 years. Wear them 5 days a week. I am on my feet all day for work.
I had a pair of steel toe Doc's in the early 00's. They were some of my favorite boots. The next year my employer switched to Redwings so that's what I got.
Shanks are not really useful for casual city boots, tbh..for mountaineering boots, work boots and logging boots where you need stiffness for sure, but for a pair of boots you only wear on paved sidewalks they are less comfortable than a more flexible pair. Also, could the blueing just be the stains caused by coloured socks?
Eric Tan-W nope it’s from part of the leather tanning process! If enough people are interested, he’ll make a leather 101 video and go into more details about it!
I think any time a boot has a heel it needs a shank to prevent the collapsing of that gap area. You can feel it in your feet when you wear a boot without a shank. After a year or so it gets really painful
the blueing is on the inside of the leather. If you look closely you can see a strip of blue in the cross section. The reason it shows on the tongue is because they split the leather in half to make it thinner and more comfortable for the tongue, thus exposing the blueing of the leather. Good question!
Rose Anvil ..Thanks, just wondering cause the leather lining on my old hiking boots, which were perfectly clean at the start, got stained by the dye on wool socks when my feet were sweaty, or maybe even mould! So I’m guessing they are to do with the chrome tanning process then? Btw, I’m really more interested in footwear and am not a leather expert, so thanks for the informative videos.
Another great video. Can't wait for you to reach the 10k so we can see what's going on inside the modern MIE's. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
I've burned through three pairs of Docs in my life. The ones from the 90's took way more of a beating than the lame modern day version. The squared soles were less prone to slipping as well.
Good to see someone sacrifice for the guts and real facts. My pair of brown leather Doc's are still around, always gave them a mink oil soak and shine, just nicer with time. All of my black and colored boots look abused after a year or two and the top trim collar piece have all de-stitched and just don't have the shelf life, still fun to wear. The steel-toe edition is great for black and rugged, but heavy and not as breathable.
Sick man keep doing what your doing! Oo and could you look in to cutting up/reviewing some solovair who apparently make the better boot of the same style
I would be deeply appreciative of any consumer education videos. Leather quality and differences, the purpose /pros/cons of different features used in boots and other leather products. How to spot cost cutting and misleading construction methods. That’s what I’m really here for.
Squid currently I don’t ride any of them but I’ve got a 1973 750 unit and a 1962 pre unit 650. In half way through the 750 build but I got obsessed with dr martens so it’s been put on the back burner
Before I started covering my own seats for the motorcycles I build I knew nothing about high or low quality leather. I think a video explaining to everyone would be awesome.
Red Wings are made in China are not near the quality they once were. If you want a true Quality Boot Wesco still family owned and handmade. They're just really expensive
I wore Docs from about 1992-1995. I only had one pair of shoes/boots at a time, they were virtually identical to the boot in this video except with a different tread pattern on the bottom. They were amazingly comfortable after break-in, but never quite made it thru one calendar year before the sole would embarrassingly separate from the rest of the boot near the toe. I was just a high-school kid with a busy life and a job after school, always expected the boots to last longer... but never made it to the 12 month mark.
I had many pairs of Doc Martins in the 70's in the UK, none had the sole of the boots you have there. Mine had the classic airwair pattern. Made popular by skinheads & suedeheads way before punk. Comfy but the soles were not long lasting. Girls/women originally wore monkey boots not dockers. Was hard to watch a beaut old pair of boots destroyed.

I’m late to the shoe-cutting party, but when I saw those vintage Docs, and I knew you were going to cut them, my heart already started breaking ☹️
This is well worth watching! Thank you! You help folks know how these boots are built!
Thank you!
I'm in for the leather 101 too. Any informational video from you will be good as far as I am concerned.
Mike Calhoun look for Brian the Bootmaker. He showed some DM resoles. Adding a shank would be no problem I guess.
Thanks mike!
I love watching Brian the boot maker he is such a sweetheart
@@dfh-video3269 I just watched 3 of his videos. This guy is gooooood. Thanks for the info.
@@RoseAnvil I just watched 3 of his videos in a row. He is gooooood.
11200! we've done it! great review. i love your channel!
🙌🙌🙌 thanks for the support
Do you think these were made at the old 90s NPS / Solovair factory?
DevonReviewer I’m not sure. I’ve been trying to identify when exactly they were made but there is so little info out there on these. Also your channel is awesome thanks for the support!
I bought those boots in 1998 junior year, they were a little different almost looked exact, got rid of them recently! Best boots I ever owned.
Literally the second video I’ve seen of you and oh course I want to see the boots cut it half! It hurts my soul but I MUST KNOW
It’s starting to become a problem!
In less than four weeks you gained over 20,000 subscribers. Good work people.
Crazy right!? It’s been super fun
Yes to 101 leather video!!!
whatevergabby it’s in the works!
Gosh, I never thought a reconstructed boot video would be so intriguing to watch. Well played👍
Thank you!
100% interested for the leather 101 video
Shaina Anderson next week🤞
Cracked up at the Mulan reference. So thanks for the giggle.
On the more affordable side of quality, check out chippewa. They are really comfortable.
Miguel Vargas I’m a huge fan of Chippewa. My main hunting/hiking boots are Chippewa
Miguel Vargas my absolute favorite brand! Why don’t more people know about them?
@@White000Crow The Poor Man's Red Wings.
I cried watching you cut into the vintage boots, I miss my old pair that were exactly like those. But I was really interested in seeing what was inside.
Same! But there are a lot on eBay and Etsy
Just bought some beat up old docs and I'm trying to check their age. Do you know any standout things you can look at to tell you what era they are from?
1970‘s outsoles don’t have the sign „made in England“
I love wearing Dr Marten boots as a schoolboy in highschool and as a university student also. Between the years 1982 to 1992. Seeing this content makes me want to purchase and wear Dr Martens again.
Great video, I would also love to see a video about the different kinds of leather or maybe a video where you take apart and compare a pair of red wings.
Mandie Klessens I’m hoping to do a series on redwing next!
Danner after that
They were made just like I remember. Feeling nostalgic!
Also, pretty sure that brown leather was called Crazy horse. You can tell if it is by pressing fingers along the inside of the boot and seeing the outer brown leather fade lighter (if that makes sense).
Cool!
Sooo i really enjoyed hearing about the quality in dr martens but now the question is: what kind of shoes do you recommend? Maybe similar style but good quality would be great
That’s a good question. I’ve been pretty happy with my made in England pair of dr martens so far but time will tell
Makes me miss my old boots even more, the only 2 boots I ever really enjoyed were my old docs and my keen gypsums
I got my first pair in 1976 and they are definitely different now to when I was a kid. Im in England and they were only made here then. Btw the 90's are definitely not long enough ago to be vintage haha!
Absolutely right! You and I are about the same age I guess, we KNOW what the REAL Doc Martens are like. 90s ain't vintage hahahah. I'm near Northampton btw, where they were made. BTW the guy cutting up the boot in the video, that ain't even a DM! look at the thread, nothing like DMs.
My aunt gave me her old Mary Jane's she got 35 years ago when she was 16. Theses shoes are so pretty and cool
I am definitely gonna wait for that new dr.martens made in England get cut in half.. i've been rocking vintage doc's for the past 6-7 years and i am really satisfied with it even it doesn't really last long as i got it from a thrift shop.. currently rocking my third pair of Doc's i just want to know if the new one were as good as the old one
Iskandar Khairul Anuar I’m dying to know too! I just found a ton of good vintage pairs on Etsy too
@@RoseAnvil currently rocking my dr.martens 8457 !! The other 2 pairs was 8460 it was a really good shoes.. thanks i will try to look on etsy if i could get some Doc's myself 😁😁 really enjoy your content by the way 👍👍👍
Agreed, I wish they put the commando sole on their new Made in England boots, so much better wearing.
Love my NOS (90s) pair with those soles.
Maybe one day they will
Thank you for making this series! I’m in the market for my first pair of docs and you’ve saved me from buying the shitty Thailand ones. Curious to see how the made in England ones compare. Keep up the good work!
glad i could help!
Crystian they make a good woman. 😉
Best vids i've stumbled upon on Utoobe of late.Fantastic...educational and entertaining.
Leather 101 will be highly appreciated.
They look like the ones I first bought when I was in high school back in 1995. I miss those boots and I never should have thrown them away. Back then I never ever dreamed they'd be made in freakin China.
Would love to see some Danners or Red Wings
Those are exactly the model I used to wear in the 90s. Love those boots. I believe they remain in mum's house
How long should the sole of the shoe last, before getting into the honeycomb soul ? I buy a new pair every 2 years. Wear them 5 days a week.
I am on my feet all day for work.
michael R that’s not bad for the price I guess. Thank for sharing your info!
That’s much longer than any shoes I’ve ever had has lasted. So id day you’re getting your moneys worth.
yes! looking forward to see the next cut-in-half boot :-) Love it
Damiano Cecchelin thanks we are on our way to 10k pretty quick!
Now I'm happier that I bought my Doc"s in the '90's!
That’s super interesting. I’m 99% sure the blueing is from the tanning process but you never know ha ha
I loved mine. Bought from River island. I still have mine. But I wish I could have s replacement sole. So comfortable!
what kind of cutting knife did you use in the video?
Robert Wang it’s a leather working knife with a hook blade. I think district leather supply sells some.
Another great video. Can't wait for you to reach the 10k so we can see what's going on inside the modern MIE's. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
timmytrousers thanks! It looks like we should get there maybe by the end of next week!
I find the "open body" inspections of boots very intersting.
Woudl like to see more of tham, not juat about Dr. Martens.
Great Vid btw
That’s the 🥅
Ha ha oops *goal
It was cool to see the difference!!!
OopsNoName Found as painful as it is, it is really interesting
I've burned through three pairs of Docs in my life. The ones from the 90's took way more of a beating than the lame modern day version. The squared soles were less prone to slipping as well.
Good to see someone sacrifice for the guts and real facts. My pair of brown leather Doc's are still around, always gave them a mink oil soak and shine, just nicer with time. All of my black and colored boots look abused after a year or two and the top trim collar piece have all de-stitched and just don't have the shelf life, still fun to wear. The steel-toe edition is great for black and rugged, but heavy and not as breathable.
Y'all gotta comment more to help the RUclips algorithm !!!!!
rocky beans amen brother!
I bought a pair of vintage docs for $20 at an antique shop 6 years ago, they’re in way netter shape than the new pair I bought 2 years ago.
😢 those boots were so perfect
It hurt
Your series is super interesting! I hope you do more!
thanks! thats the plan!
Already sub bro and ace video on the vintage docs if you could do a 101 on leather that would be ace too
Rafael Star hopefully next week!
Sick man keep doing what your doing! Oo and could you look in to cutting up/reviewing some solovair who apparently make the better boot of the same style
Rafael Star that’s the plan for the video after the made in England doc martens
I would be deeply appreciative of any consumer education videos. Leather quality and differences, the purpose /pros/cons of different features used in boots and other leather products. How to spot cost cutting and misleading construction methods. That’s what I’m really here for.
Yo what kinda triumph do you ride? I got a street triple, it's a sweet shirt
Squid currently I don’t ride any of them but I’ve got a 1973 750 unit and a 1962 pre unit 650. In half way through the 750 build but I got obsessed with dr martens so it’s been put on the back burner
I've had a pair of doc mart for 5 years, still good
You have surpassed 10K subs, when are you cutting the “MIE Boots”?! We have a deal!
Before I started covering my own seats for the motorcycles I build I knew nothing about high or low quality leather. I think a video explaining to everyone would be awesome.
I'm going to save my money and buy a pair of Red Wings ...
Ha ha ya redwings are awesome
Red Wings are made in China are not near the quality they once were. If you want a true Quality Boot Wesco still family owned and handmade. They're just really expensive
Thursday boots are great option as well. For 200 bucks not a better deal
Walter Thomas Red Wing Heritage boots are made in the USA.
I have my subscriptions page as my youtube shortcut, so I see the ones I'm subscribed too all the time.
still waiting for the current MIE DM to be cut in halfff.
This hurts my soul - I live and die by Docs, but also fantastic content and yes please for the leather 101 video!
🙌 thanks
the soles on the vintage ones are gorgeous
