I've never understood why these ships carrying potentially millions of dollars worth of Cargo don't have a well armed security team on board. They could have sunk their little boat, or killed every pirate on board before they could ever reach the ship.
They get the ladder hooked, but boat turns and they can't get on, at that point if someone is able to unhook the ladder and dump it in the water they can't get up
Even if you were able to get to where they were, saying you even saw them, when you went to unhook that ladder you would get shot in the face via high volume round which = 100% facial destruction and death.
This is litterally impossible if the crew had just a few firearms.....good luck climbing the side of a ship when there's a shotgun aimed down at you, Hellen Keller couldn't miss that shot.

Or at the very least nearby military vessels ready to assist? If it's a large group of pirates then one guy with a gun isn't going to be able to do much especially since many of them would presumably be armed and only a few of them would be climbing up at a time which leaves the rest of them free to provide covering fire.

Most countries won't allow a vessel carrying weapons into port - and if caught with them, the captain and crew face some pretty serious criminal charges. Smuggling weapons (which is the normal charge for something like this) in Singapore, for example, warrants the death penalty. Today, security forces can be hired that board the ship in international waters and leave before entering territorial waters. But, when this event happened, the norm was deploying barbed wire and use of fire hoses.
