Been here before. We had our own guide as no one knew we was going over but it was fantastic. I was walking along the thick huge grass and just randomly seen a ww1 radio station
Nobody in their right mind would want to stay in a hotel if one was built on the island because they'd soon get fed up having to take a boat to and from Plymouth in rough seas..:)
It never happened. He sold the island for 1/3rd of his asking price, and now it's a heritage site. The tours are really good, and preservation are the main goal
It used to be a great adventure centre. Spent two weeks there on a school trip in the late seventies. Sailing, canoeing, climbing, etc. A special island. The tunnels are just amazing. I hope someone does something with it, so sad to see it abandoned.
My Dad worked there as an instructor, on sabbatical from the RAF. He was offered a permanent position (Warden?) but my Mum couldn't face living on the island. I was just a young kid at the time
I love drakes island and been on there 3 times . It says private property no trespassing but last year plymouth live actually said go and explore it before someone buys it !
See it all the time have always wanted to go over there I live in Plymouth and have always wonderd what was there shame it’s going to be a hotel there 😱😐🤔
If I owned the island I'd certainly think of ways to turn it into some kind of tourist attraction, for example by running boatloads of tourists there several times a day so they could wander round for an hour clicking their cameras at say £25 a head..;)
You can tell immediately that this is several years old because Drake is referred to as a hero - today's woke BBC would describe him as some sort of bigot. The BBC must be destroyed.
My grandmother, Maria(Margaret) McGarry was born on Drakes Island. Her father John was a Gunner in the RA. My grandmother came to the USA in1891.
How fantastic. I'm Plymouth born..
Spent many happy times there as a seascout on the sixties, met the Duke of Edinburgh there. Give it back to the people of Plymouth

I love Plymouth and it's people 🏴 💖
I spend a year in Plymouth and I can't wait get back there and meet my English friends 🏴💖
I love ocean city
Plymouth city centre is horrendous. It was beautiful before the war.
This should be protected by English Heritage as a place of historic importance.
My Great Grandfather Charles Payne was Battery Sargent Major on the Island in 1890
What a bloody shame... ANOTHER bloody hotel we don't need!
Cumudgen

It is a real pity that it is no longer an adventure centre. It would be of much more use to Plymouth than some ridiculous 'luxury hotel'
This is a great video. I've always been fascinated with this island, so thanks for sharing.

@@skyelliott1859 Wow! I'd love to go.
If I ever win the Euromillions I'm buying it...but I'd keep the name.
Sir Francis Drake was a legend.
I sometimes wonder about the lives of the people who built it. The hard work and effort they put in to build such a amazing place
3 people from Exeter disliked this video
lol
Haha, Exeter is just that boring place people pass through on the way to Plymouth..;)
Distressing neglect of an impressive landmark.
was there on a school journey in 1973...spent 2 weeks there

I'm a distant relative. So I'm glad to see it .
I wish you had a better light

Two years in 1975?

Best chance of getting there is to get a small boat and leave the hoe at night time there's no security just watch out for police boats going by
Sames but no boat
the drake island should not be touch leave it has it is
i thought this was drake's island, turns out its just drake's island
I spent two weeks on Drakes Island as a 14 year old when it was used as an outward bound center.
Those tunnels are creepy as f*ck......
Another hotel for the few, sad.
Who's this dolly presenter, with the blush? I'd like to kiss her toes.

My thoughts exactly no BAME presenter no people of color in any of the historical segments.
