      Some of the oils can be expensive but you can still save a lot of money doing it yourself. Just be careful when going under the car, you can probably just get some ramps and always chalk off the back wheels and use your parking break especially for FWD. 😀

    "Use retained or new 14mm bolt and washer." ALWAYS replace the washer! You can re-use the bolt. With a copper washer (not plastic) you can torque to specs. Which brings us to the next point...since the video creator used a TORQUE wrench, it's worth pointing out that proper torque on the drain plug is 25 ft/lbs. IF you don't have a torque wrench & you're in a bind, you can tighten it snug but not too tight...especially w plastic washers (I prefer copper).

    • @MINUTEDIYVIDEOS
      @MINUTEDIYVIDEOS  3 года назад

      Go for it! I’m poor, I need the $5 bucks. Ive never had an issue with Fram filters ive used them for 25 years. Oil filters are a $29 Billion market so I’m sure most of what I hear about the inferiority of Fram is to take more of their hold on the segment. If you don’t like Fram filters, and stay awake thinking about the horrors of a cheap paper filter not doing a good enough job, even tho trillions of cars use them everyday without issue, then by all means buy into the hysteria and propaganda and give some marketing geniuses more of your money ;) I am constantly given shit about my use of Fram filters, you’ve been the most direct and kind about it! If they are junk and you know that to be true then go with what you know. I don’t know that to be true and I don’t believe cutting oil filters open and looking at them has proven anything valuable to me. Thanks for asking!

Great question, best thing to do is take them with you when you dispose of the oil filter and oil at Autozone or other auto parts that accepts oil, they have special bins out front for empty oil lined containers and oil contaminated waste like paper towels. Me personally as a technician, I would not go 10k miles on an oil change. With oil getting better now days, you can definitely go 10k miles on an oil change. DEPENDING on driving habits. The harder you run your engine the quicker your oil life degrades. Id just stick with the oil maintenance reminder on your instrument cluster. When its down to 20% is when I would change it so sludge build up is not really a concern to your engine.

    I looked online the manual says you can put 0w-20 or you can put 5w-30 ,under the hood it says to put 0w-20 ,while the manual seems to say you can put either?
    Will I ruin my engine by putting 5w / 30? It's a Nissan Altima 2016 model SR

    • @mayeri3083
      @mayeri3083 5 лет назад

      @BaggedWater Yup did the same in the end. Mine is the SR model but only takes 4.9quarts the whole bottle was accidentally put in. I hope that's fine.
      When I stopped in AutoZone the guy behind the counter used to work in the Toyota dealership he told me most Toyotas say to use 0w / 20 while you can really use 5w / 30 which would be better for your engine ,but they don't tell you that even though a regular mechanic would put in 5w 30, by the dealership they want to get away cheap and only put what the car recommends. 0w-20

      I like Mobile One and Fram filters (most people prefer k&n, but I think Fram work just fine) Costco has 6 quarts of 0w20 Mobile One on sale just about every other month for $28 and Walmart will usually have the 5 quart jug of Mobile One 0w20 on sale for about $27. Thanks for watching!

    hey i was told to pour some oil in the filter because the filter holds a good amount of oil,, may i ask , did you do that in this vid?

    • @MINUTEDIYVIDEOS
      @MINUTEDIYVIDEOS  7 лет назад +2

      +Kwame Mcdonald hello! Thanks for the question.
      I hear this question a lot about oil filter changes. As it isn't harmful to do this I would say it's optional to fill the filter with oil. But I don't recommend it as it will make a mess as you go to install the filter on some cars like this Altima where the filter is put on horizontally. This would mean all the oil will simply pour out as your tip the filter to install it. So in the video I don't recommend filling the oil filter for this basic reason.
      Additionally, the oil filter is very small and retains a very small amount of oil after the engine is shut off and cold. If you are concerned about insuring the level of oil is accurate when installing a new filter, you can run the engine briefly. This will circulate the oil into the empty filter. Then turn off the engine and let it rest for 10 minutes. Then you will get very accurate reading from the dipstick. For the Altima the difference between readings taken without running the engine first and/or without filling the oil filter with oil before installing will be very negligible and most likely unnoticeable difference. A greater but vary slight variance might be seen on cars with filters installed upside down which trap more oil, or with much much larger oil filters like earlier model Mercedes where running the engine before taking the readings can be important.
      The other reason I've heard for perpetuating this almost mythical step is the idea that the inside of the filter needs to be lubed or primed with oil first. This is definitely not the case for engines I work on, I'm not sure about every possible engine style so check your particular manual if you have a very rare engine. The filter will instantly be filled and thoroughly "lubed" with oil as soon as your engine is turned on. Maybe it came from a misinterpretation of the necessary step to lube the oil filter gasket with oil.
      I hope this gives you the answers you were looking for :) and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks so much for taking the time to ask I really appreciate it! -luke

      i appreciate the response, yea i was taught on my 97 nissan maxima, so now that i have this 5th gen altima, i was going to replicate, but i do agree, that the oil ALWAYS spills when i put oil in the filter and have to go sideways to tighten the filter

    • @hm3426
      @hm3426 6 лет назад

      Yes. It's called priming the filter. It hold s up to a quart of oil.
      Reason for priming is because it will take sometime for the filter to fill while the parts in the engine is running without oil. Is bad in the long run, for the engine. Specially, those old engine with lifters. If you don't do it, you will hear lifters tapping

    Very good.....Also, start the engine and let it run about 15 seconds to let the oil circulate into the filter and then check the oil level again!
    Good job!
    Thanks!

    I took my 2015 Altima to get oil change at local Nissan dealership and on the invoice it stated they used 5W-30 but on owner's manual stated 0W-20 (Synthetic). The service dept said my car uses regular convention 5W-30. I told them no, it should be synthetic. I thought the service dept would look up the car on the comp to know the vescosity of the oil. Will the 5W-30 ruin my engine? My car has only 25K miles. Oil change every 5K miles.
    I will need to learn how to change my own oil from now on (your video makes it look so easy, thank you) or take it to and diff place.

      Foodie they have been putting the same in my car all this time when the hood underneath says synthetic as well I took it to another place and they said they would only put synthetic in cause that's what it require they was getting over conv oil is cheaper breaks down sooner requiring you to come back as to up sell you on other products now I don't have to go back for 7000 miles why would they delibertly not put the specific oil type something is shady here.

    • @Foodie_888
      @Foodie_888 6 лет назад +2

      Mark Cleveland Exactly! Nissan dealerships are shady. I made copies of my past oil change invoices and circled and underlined the conventional oil 5W-30 and mailed them to Nissan Corporate office. I wrote a cover letter (with a copy of owner's manual of the page stating the oil type) detailing the service advisors, techs and service dept mgr whom I've spoken to about my car's oil type and no effort was made to correct. I hope they all get fired (especially the service advisors and svc dept mgr) trying rip people off. I even called Better Business Bureau on the dealership.
      Now I buy the full synthetic oil 0W-20 and filter and take it to a car shop for them to change my oil. We know the owner. The shop only charge $15.

      Foodie yeah I got mine as well I didn't think they was like that but I guess I was wrong like why would you delibertly put something you know that's not recommended I'm blown away by this Discovery today and I'm pushing for this service in the extended warranty plan they offered

    • @Foodie_888
      @Foodie_888 6 лет назад +1

      Mark Cleveland To be honest, I think each Nissan dealership took their queue from corporate. I will keep making a huge fuss until Nissan Corporate and local Nissan dealership acknowledge they were in the wrong. Granted they will never officially admit it but for damn sure I will make sure consumers are aware. They hire consultants to run numbers on payoffs when they get caught. You can be sure they thought it through ripping off consumers in oil changes would be minimal impact to their bottom line b/c why else would they go forward with it? Heaven only knows what other services and products they have pushed, are pushing or will push on consumers that only benefit corporate greed.

    • @Foodie_888

      Mark Cleveland Keep your receipts and all things Nissan service related, I have a feeling a few class action lawsuits will be on the horizon for Nissan. I pray the lawsuits will be very favorable to consumers.

      Check your owner's manual. 5W-30 is fine I think. My 2013 Altima takes either 5W-30 or 0W20, but 0W-20 is preferred. Strange, one is conventional oil, and one is fully synthetic, and oil need to be changed every 3750 miles!
