    I'll never criticise them for wanting to make the best game possible and not wanting to force out a game that's not finished.
    However, they do deserve all the criticism they get for the other stuff. Development updates announcing features being removed, announcing the game with no details of what's in the game, a roadmap with nothing to note on it and the final straw being asking for pre orders then 10/11 days later delaying for another 4 months! They would have known on 30 Sept that the games in a bad way. If they had just announced the delay then it would have being received a bit better.
    Si also contradicts himself big time by saying they wouldn't have known 10 days ago but then goes onto explain that the decision to delay would have been discussed before 30 Sept.

    • @TheFMShowPod
      @TheFMShowPod  3 месяца назад +2

      Hey,
      Si here. I think I explain that but for clarity;
      What I mean is the original decision to delay was likely taken more than 10 days ago and would have been submitted and subject to approval by sega, partners, etc. Approval on that could have taken any amount of time (it’s irrelevant really). In between that delay request being submitted and yesterday they anticipated that it will take them longer, for whatever reason(s). I’m this scenario they then have to go back to Sega and partners and ask again, maybe with a greater sense of importance and urgency given the impending announcements and release, and the game going up for preorder. The decision to announce and put the game on preorder, or delay the game originally was likely made months ago. Even if they knew more 10 days ago they aren’t allowed to just change it.

      @@TheFMShowPod Appreciate the reply but I still stick by my point, I'm not implying they did it as a money grab or anything. The June 2024 blog laid the foundations for them struggling by removing features, the 4th Sept blog was another admittance by them the games in no state. They shouldn't have even got to the point of announcing pre orders or anything on 30 Sept in my opinion.

    • @Just-Wool
      @Just-Wool 3 месяца назад +1

      It's entirely possible they had no idea on the 30th September things were as bad as they thought in terms of timelines. I work in software delivery and what looks on the surface to be a one or two sprint fix can morph into a 5 month job the more you get into debugging. I'm releasing software next month that we should have delivered in Summer because the new tech we were using to replace our old systems suddenly had big problems translating responses and we found that we had to re-write 25% of our codebase because it would never be truly stable otherwise. Originally my devs told me they could get it fixed in a week. Snowballing is real. (Watching a dev slowly unravel when they realise the enormity of what they have to do is fascinating)
      It's very likely SI hit a huge performance show stopping issue, that their devs looked at and said originally "Give me a couple of sprints and we can get it fixed" only for them to get one sprint in and be "Actually, no, this is a whole rewrite of the module" or "our third party vendor has to write something new to fix this and they have a lead in time and can't start till January" or any number of things of that nature.
      It's very simplistic to say "They would have known at the time" because from experience it's common that isn't the case at all.
      They would have planned for delays, all good product owners do, they will have a contingency plan for "If this isn't done by November what do we do" and possibly already had agreements in place ready to go for a March release in case of emergency when they had the original conversations with stakeholders and licensors. However it doesn't mean that just because they plan for something, they know it's gonna have to happen.

      Yes. they released the launch date, the pre-orders and roadmap knowing full well that game was nowhere near ready for release. No idea if that was from pressure by Sega or not, but they've now painted themselves into a corner where it has to be amazing when it's released in March.

      Why would they do that? That doesn’t benefit them in any way.
      Remember it’s not one person. It’s a studio that needs approval for everything from partners and sega.
      For example- maybe someone in the match engine team realised it probably won’t be ready to the standards they want, but pressure from Sega was that it was close to a state ready to at least release.

      @@TheFMShowPod 1. Getting money from pre-orders (in the same financial quarter as planned) is benefiting them in a very obvious way, no? It's not that everyone is cancelling their pre-orders now ...
      2. Also the other 'strong' message they send out with this is: 'the game will be released, dont worry, everybody stay calm, it's alive, you can pre-order it, see' ... which btw puts even more pressure on the poor development team to potentially crunch ...
      About the 'it could be one thing' that's causing the delay suddenly and this wasn't planned: What supports this theory?
      In the majority of cases of development delays it's because of a lot of quality concerns summing up and becoming too much too handle - and that is very obvious to people working on the games before 1,2 month of the planned release. Pretty sure if it would be 'one surprise issue suddenly' they would pull all sorts of strings to fix it (with quite a lot of money and support from Unity - it's big for them too), because like you pointed out the misery of secondary issues this causes - looking at you fm 26 - is gigantic.

    There are a lot of community comments where you can justifiably say "that's tin foil hat thinking" Si, but trying to claim they didn't know a further delay was highly likely 12 days ago when they announced pre-orders with an empty roadmap is not one of them. Your explanation that they found problems that they hadn't found already only goes to prove the point that they must have been miles behind on testing at a point in which they should be getting to alpha/beta builds. No blame on the devs working on it, highly likely the time they were given to complete the job was doomed from the start. But those senior people pushing to get a game out in Nov and not having contingency plans in place to delay sooner is a justifiable criticism, no matter how good the final product may or may not be in March.

    • @ajprop99

    I will commend SI for pushing the game back to March, but i have to criticise them for doing it a week after releasing a roadmap. Surely they knew the game wasn't ready, if they are trying to be open and honest, that was a chance.
    I doubt they will add in international management to FM25, i think the delay would be the game is a mess as is. They won't add things back to it while its a mess. They have a few months additional now to blow people away with what the game will be, bht they have done quite a bit of damage to there rep with this years mess. Having spent some time working in develoment I'm almost 100% that they knew the game was nowhere near ready for release when they opened it up for pre-order (possibly under pressure from Sega, possibly not, can't speculate about that). If you've managed the project properly, a situation that would cause the launch to be delayed for six months doesn't happen overnight, or in the space of a week. This is all about project management and it looks like it's been managed very badly. I get that delays happen and it is what it is, but they really need to seriously look at their marketing and PR. It's likely their agreement with Sega means they have to release something before the end of the financial year and March is as late as that could be pushed back. As a company that only releases one game a year they also have to release something before the end of the financial year as otherwise they'd probably fold. They're now in the situation where it has to be amazing when it's released in March. There's A LOT riding on this now.

      Spot on. The commentariat keep talking as if SI is a single person. There are layers to this. The folks writing the code and the folks writing press releases are rarely in agreement, even when things launch on time. @simaggio tried to explain this too. It's how large teams work (or don't! )
      This announcement isn't a surprise to me at all, sadly. That September announcement when Miles was going to cancel holidays to help the team "focus" is project speak for 'we are in trouble, folks!' 😢
      It still could be awesome in March. There might be features back in. There is also a non-zero probability that the next FM release is not on unity. None of us really know how bad the new code is.

    I think they fully intended to release the game in November in whatever state it was in and, in part, rely on the goodwill of the community to carry it through a 4-5 month hell cycle of patching and hot fixing.
    The reaction to the first delay as well as the road map and other elements showed that perhaps the the goodwill isn't quite as sound as they'd hoped and it wouldn't be enough to see them through resulting in the decision to just pull it entirely (why else would you open pre-orders and offer no Beta less than 2 weeks before admitting you need 5 more months dev)
    As for the timeline of the delay, it's entirely possible that the game won't be in the a launch state in March and that the March date is a red line dictated by the financial year requirements of both SI and SEGA. If you budget/forecast for a yearly sports game and that game doesn't come out in the financial year it's a big hole to plug.
    I'd heavily temper expectations for March because, while I'd be shocked if it was delayed again (for the reasons above), I don't think this time will be used to polish and fine tune the game (or add missing features) but just to get it in a passable state to release.

I have pre-ordered (and wont be asking for a refund) the game on the fact that it is a management game that I have played since before there was even a 2D match engine and it was only text based so to have any form of match engine is fantastic and I am happy for. I definitely agree with the delay being delayed by corporate paperwork/timeline. There are some disgruntled fans who claim the 10 day window for accepting pre-orders was a money grab (or a way of adding "profits" to the accounts, even if those then had to be refunded). Here's the thing, if that was the actual goal of SI, then they could have waited until we were further into October before announcing the March delay. 15 days of a pre-order "scam" is better than 10, after all. Instead, it sounds like either a further delay was requested and had to be debated in Sega corridors OR the SI overseer from Sega made the call to delay things after seeing/hearing how bad things are with the game.
    My biggest criticism over all this is that it's obvious the changeover to Unity has been a challenge. If they've been working on this for years and still need an extra 6-8 months of development time, then it was a colossal mistake to announce the shift last year. Either someone thought the Unity development was miles ahead of where it actually was, that they knew it wasn't while believing those miles would be easy to cross, or FM25 being the first Unity game was an executive decision that didn't consult the programmers.

    I'm sorry, but there's no way that SI didn't think such a massive delay was at the very least highly probable, especially taking into account the length of the delay. It wouldn't have been a decision that was just made in the last couple of days after the most recent news. To make pre-orders open and expect fans to pay from now, despite knowing the probability of such a long delay occurring is scummy.

    I completely agree with Aaron here and what he’s trying to say. I won’t be as nice about it - SI have been really bad communicators for years. But this is the tip of the iceberg, where it just frankly looks dodgy, even if they weren’t trying to be. Had they actually fulfilled their improved communication promises in the past then we could maybe give them leeway here, but it’s just compounded on what was already bad.
    I actually don’t trust SI at all, and my love for them as a studio has gone.
    I will wait obviously to see what they eventually put out. But I’m no longer excited. FM24 is dead for me personally. So I’m at a place where I’m going to look at other games which I might become more passionate about going forward.

    Another thought I have had is how sales will be hurt… who wants to pay full price for a game in march then again in November? Surely they need to maybe consider FM26 to be JUST an update giving them an extra year to nail FM27

  • @thedailylifeofthings

    I'm in the disappointed camp; but i'd rather they released a game that was actually playable than just shove something out and see it crash & burn - i know they wouldn't do it, but i'd love SI to release some scenario challenges for FM 24 to keep us going. I'm sure (i *think*) that an older FM had a Challenge mode in which it gave you a game-load scenario and you had to see if you could do better; showing my age (as i've probably got it completely wrong and just made it up), but I'm sure one of them was to do with Middlesbrough and Gareth Southgate in which you took over half way through the season to try and avoid relegation. I'd love to try Derby County 07/08 on the FM 24 engine; or, given the licensing issues of such, give us some new scenarios - that'd tide me over, and probably give content-creators something too...

    Who's gonna buy the game on March? Season we'll be almost over. Also, who's gonna buy Manager 26, with just a few months of development?
    Also... listen... I've been playing the game since 97' and I'm a really loyal & dedicated FM player, however not having a game for a year isn't the end of the world.
    I understand your concern, since you make a living out of it through your (great) videos, but we'll just keep on playing our current saves.
    The major concern atm is FM26. Since they decided to go on with the release of FM25 on March (imho it's a poor decision), there will be minimum time for updating/upgrading fm26. So, instead of buying FM25, which will we a work-in-progress game for sure, just buy FM26 and be done with it.
    FM26 will be like a patch for FM25, so why spend double money?
