    I actually found a faster way, which is an open system, but much more efficient. The way I do it in all my submarines (thanks to the new gas update) is very, very close to what is done in real life, and is also pretty compact:
    1. Put a door in the top and bottom of your ballast tanks.
    2. Add 3-20 impellers (3 worked for me on a small sub) to pressurize your gas tanks to around 1,000 atm (yes, 1,000, you heard me right) which is the max you can reasonably go. Gear them to the max, and connect it to your power source (I used a medium electric motor, plenty of power there). The impellers will not increase in pumping speed at a certain rps.
    3. When your gas tanks have been filled, open the top and bottom hatches to fill ballast.
    4. When you are ready to surface, open JUST the bottom door in your ballast, and open a valve from your air to the ballast (no pumps, apart from the impellers were used throughout this process, they limit the flow of gas/liquids, and take away some of the realism). This will blow all the water out the bottom of your ballast, leaving just air. (1. make sure to be level, otherwise air will escape. 2. some water will remain (at most a few L), you may have to pump it out when you reach the surface)
    5. You are now at the surface, and can repeat this process a few more times until you need to refill your air, which should take at most a minute or so with the proper amount of large impellers.

    For me the simple fast option doesn’t work well after the first pump, as when you empty your ballast you get a really low pressure tank. This allows you to pump fast but means it will take longer to pump out if you don’t increase the pressure. It will also not work at depth.
    I have not tried the second one but I think the best solution for subs would be a combination of both systems. Letting pressure balance in a tank when it’s empty, and then stop letting air out of the tank when filling up to build the high pressure allowing you to pump out quickly. But if you are deep underwater I think you have to use compressed gas to help.

    The fastest way I've seen is using compressed air, and bottom and top hatch, to fill open both hatches, to empty open bottom hatch and open a valve allowing compressed air in. I can empty and fill at tank 4x4x10 in about 1 or 2 secs

    Where is door version? What about having another one tank with compressed air that will drain water from your ballast tank?

      A door system won’t exactly be practical, for that to work you would have to pump gas out. Pumping is faster as doors create moon pools.

      @@fcdrummer1806 well, its true, but you dont have to pump air out. You can drain it, but once youreach surface, you should recharge you air system

    Hmm i wonder what will happen if you route a pure O2 tank into a branched out modular engine air intake. A boost?

      You can run you engines on pure nitrogen or hydrogen at the moment. It seems like the gas type doesnt make any difference at all

    My only confusion is what do you do to blow the ballast when the pressure outside is greater than 1? Like when you are like greater than 30 meters under the ocean? Would you use compressed air at that point? Would compressed outside air work or does it have to be oxygen only?

      Compressed regular air works, just make sure your set up with a hatch on the bottom to push all the water out, I'm not sure how depth effects it yet I'm currently building, a Gato like sub and will try
      But setting it up like a WWII submarine works, and you can have hatches on top and bottom, (you can keep the bottom open) open the top to fill ballast, then close top and open a valve to allow the compressed air to blow the ballast (bottom hatch must be open, top hatch closed). I can blow ballast 5x the size of the tank probably 8 or 9 times before running our of air

      @@cypher1o1The hatch way probably would be much faster. I made a test block with maybe 6000 L of volume and it works but with the ports takes just too long, so I could only imagine having a much larger ballast tank.

    what if you pressurize before pumping out or depressurize before pumping in?
