After D-Day while Easy Company is recovering at a camp by Utah Beach, Alton Moore steals a bike from the infantry’s depot. Malarky and him then sneak it on to the landing craft, then the ship and somehow manage to take it back to England. While the rest of the company rides in a train in England, Moore and Malarkey follow them in a Motorcycle. They’re later caught by Sobel, who is now a supply officer. He tells them that he knows it is stolen and wants them to return it when they ship out.

A full rifle company today is about 120 guys. I don't know what they were in the 101st during WW2, but it's probably around that.
There was a comic book made of my adventures in Iraq. An artist approached me asking for stories, which I provided. He wound up combining a few people and combining a few events in order to ease the story telling.
It's unfortunate, but it's a necessary common practice. Even a full strength platoon is too big to tell a good story about. A squad is about as big as one could handle, and even then you'll have some relatively minor characters.

None of the guys of Easy Company liked him but they all pretty much unanimously agreed that it was because of how he trained them that they became what they were. Excellent training officer with absolutely shit ability to lead in the field or adapt to changes.
His death is pretty heart breaking. Doted on his wife, was tough on his kids but apparently treated them well. Not sure how but became estranged from them. In the 70's he put a gun to his head and tried to kill himself but failed, ended up severing his optic nerves. Spent the rest of his life in a VA facility where he died alone from malnutrition. His wife and kids didn't even know until a week after he died when his sister called them to let them know. His wife believed he tried to kill himself because he believed he had cancer but wasn't willing to get tested but that's just her theory, no one actually knows for sure why he did it.

      Unfit for combat?
The real guy jumped in with another Paratrooper group, gathered 4 guys and assaulted a machine gun position Saving Private Ryan style. Not something anyone would do.
I think that as a training officer who you never have to follow into combat, he was excellent. Yes he was torturous in some of his ways but things like “here’s a heavy meal eat up and now run up a big hill for an hour or two” do prepare you for the chaos and bad timing that combat can have.
And as a small unit leader who has to answer to someone else, he likely could have been an incredibly good low ranking officer. As shown by his ability to take on a machine gun nest with just 4 people. Machine gun nests are designed to hold back dozens of people and be a strongpoint in the defense.
I don’t think the real Sobel was unfit for combat. He was unfit for unsupervised leadership where he could do a lot without anyone taking notice.

Sobel was by no means an idiot, he was an excellent training officer. He was just not company commander material in combat. Despite that, he jumped on D-Day, gathered a group of paratroopers, and led an assault on a fortified MG position.
Sobel was a poor combat leader but an excellent officer otherwise. He was also a great Dad too.

That's because they had half a century's worth of hindsight and reminiscing. We're not watching the interviews decades down the line, we're watching Sobel as he was.
