  • This is a simple video where we took a trip to my parents house and spent a little time in the back yard. My parents have a few plants in their yard including a pipe vine, Aristalochia sps that attracts Gold Rim Swallowtails, Battus polydamas. We got to find some larvae and eggs as well as a few other surprises.

Beautiful yard, your dad is a great gardener. I try so hard but Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. I am in North Florida.

I am the same way. I struggle with getting things to grow. My dad has “the touch” for sure

So cool. I have read that some exotic pipevines like the Giant pipevine and the elegant pipevine can be either distasteful or poisonous to the Pipevine Swallowtail. So be careful on what species you get.

You may be right. We don’t have pipeline swallowtails down here unfortunately. Only Battus polydamas which happily feeds on any of the exotic pipevines

My neighborhood has plenty of pipevine plants and I never see pipevine swallowtails. I saw a giant swallowtail once and a few atalas but never a pipevine swallowtail, why could that be?

Pipevine swallowtails live up in central and north florida. Unfortunately they don’t make it down here 😞

Is it possible for a pipevine and gold rim swallowtail to mate because they are both pipevine butterflies, because I know that the viceroy and red spotted purples to mate. I was just wondering if it was the same for them

Hey there. I’ve never tried to cross them. I suppose it’s possible but I do not believe they cross naturally.

I'm searching about battus polydamas cause I found one caterpillar in a piece of wood and my mom was going to kill it...
I had nothing to protect it so I did a thing with a pet bottle (?)
I don't have any big plants at home (even outside) and my cat would probably eat the caterpillar :c
Hope it survives, It's already at the next phase (?) I don't know the name in English, sorry
When it ends the phase of transforming into a cocoon (?) what should I do? cause It's in the ground... Should I leave there? clue it in a twig? I really don't know :c
    Can you help me?
sorry for my English, I'm Brazilian

Hey I love your heart for this. Good effort!!! If metamorphosis has already taken place and it is a chrysalis already, I’d put it in a container with paper towel on the bottom, on the sides and on the top so it has something to crawl up onto to dry it’s wings. Let me know what happens

That ugly plant and hideous flower is a Dutchman pipe. I can’t stand it. It stinks the high heaven! However, it brings one of the most beautiful butterflies on the face of the Earth, so I planted one of my yard.
