I have been sewing my entire life, and took up making bags about 2 years ago, and I learned more in this video about techniques and the why behind them than i have in a long time!! Excellent work! Also, I can't wait to start this bag!
Thank you so much! I consider myself a technical sewist because I always want to understand why and how things work so I can replicate successful techniques. I'm never sure if other people appreciate it or care, but I enjoy explaining how I thought through the choices I made for the pattern so they're there just in case. 🥰
You method of folding the zipper at right angles is GENIUS! That's something I always struggle with, and this way looks so much easier - and consistent like you said. Also, your finished product is stunning!
I just had to jump on to talk about this pattern real quick. I discovered it on the Oklaroots channel and I can’t tell you how much I love this bag! I’ve made a bunch for myself, friends, and family. Out of all the different patterns of bags I’ve made-this is my all time favorite. People have stopped me multiple times complimenting my purse and can’t believe i made it. Thank you for this beautiful pattern!
woow!! i learned so much that i had no clue you could do things that you show...i just wished you had more tutorials...just amazing tricks and tips.thank you!!!
Your video is just as amazing as the pattern and instructions themselfs, i have never had such a wonderfull, detailed and easy to follow pattern. I didnt even jave to watch the video because the way you wrote the pattern is amazesauce!! but i am glad i did because it is absolutely wonderful! I cannot wait to get more 🥰
Wow, Phyllis thank you so much for your kind words! What you explained is exactly what I strive for! 🥹 I truly appreciate you taking the time to come back here and comment that!
Love everything about this bag! It’s like you designed it just for me … and no ugly binding. Just finished my first one. Now I want one in every color. Great video as well!
Excellent instructions. Very thorough. Just got the pattern (and another one😀) on your website. Your ‘Past Gallery Work’ photos are beautiful and inspirational and crazy fun!
What a fabulous bag! I bought your pattern, watched the video and now I’m ready to sew. Your style of presentation with the detailed instructions is very helpful and inspirational, thank you and wishing you all the best in your venture, I can’t wait to explore your other designs as well!
Hi Shannon, I’m considering using some soft black Japanese suede that was given to me as a gift and I’ve been waiting for the right project to do it justice. Do you think the Aries Crossbody will be suitable for suede? Your valued opinion would be really appreciated, thank you. Michele (Adelaide Australia)
I hesitate to answer with confidence because I haven't personally sewn with that material myself. But I think most materials are doable with this pattern! If you cannot fuse interfacing to that material, I suggest investing in some peel & stick interfacing so you still have that support and don't have any slouching occur. Quite a few have made it with faux suede and it looks/seems to feel luxurious, so as long as it isn't too thick I say go for it!! And then please be sure to share it so I can see 😍
Could be easily done by just printing the pieces at a larger scale 🥰 thankfully the pieces should make it fairly easy for you, you'd just need to calculate the zipper length!
I must say, your videos are far and away the best I've seen! Thank you so much for your explanations and demonstrations. You not only instruct, you tell us why you do the techniques the way you do. Is that Jim Hopper on your domestic machine?
I love the bag 😍 it's small but so much space. I have not seen the video yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I always appreciate a video with a pattern. Thank u so much
Shannon, my press that you recommended came today , I already have an arbor press but I love this one that you recommended so much thank you for letting me know about it! It is so easy to use!
How is it I have been sewing handbags for 2 years and NEVER learned some of the things you taught me in this video??!!! Thank you! Small thing that bothered me, you keep saying ‘either side,’ which technically means, one side. Amen for the visuals, because if it was a written pattern only, that would be confusing LOL. Please, keep making patterns! This is an excellent purse. Bought the pattern. Can’t wait to get started.
Glad to hear it, thank you! I don't recite the written pattern while filming the video - I simply explain it while doing it, which is why the rambles and rants happen, ha. So the explanations in the pattern are better. Thankfully my patterns also have tons of photo visuals to help provide further context, but I will try to use both/each/one side in place of either to help clarify. Sorry about that!
@@knottedthreadsco I have a Juki DX7 which I think is what you have, or similar. I was wondering if you could make this on just it with these materials?
Totally enjoyed your video. Great discussion on making this bag. I was greatly surprised to see you show how much fabric you had remaining from new 18" roll. Thank you you!!! I have been making bags for myself for several years. I struggle with economical pattern cut- layout in non-commercial patterns. Just being honest, maybe that is a subject you could address further in your videos?
Is that Tom Selleck on your machine 😍😍 thanks for sharing your annoying tidbits cause they are a big deal to me also. Great tutorial, I love this pattern. Just purchased!
Ha! Nope, it's David Harbour as his role as Hopper from Stranger Things. 😂 I love that sticker so much lol. And thank you so much! I'm happy to hear that! I hope you love it!
Is it possible to just use the magnet closure without using the tab for the gusset pocket? Or is the gusset too wide for the magnet to stay closed? Thanks.
I love this bag and the tutorial looks fantastic. Are you able to sew the whole thing on a domestic machine? I’ve got a Juki DX7 (which I think you have as well?), and I know it’s capable of more than most domestic machines, but do you think it would cope with this pattern whilst still using cork/vinyl in the same places you’ve demonstrated? Thanks!
Thank you! Absolutely! I've sewn up a full vinyl on my DX7 and it was a thick one. 🥰 It's designed to be domestic friendly and I haven't had anyone complain to me that their domestic can't handle it. But I always add the disclaimer that of course some materials will give your domestic a hard time. For example: Silieather bulks up super quick and is stretchy, so not a good choice for a domestic. But otherwise I take great care to avoid sewing bulk wherever possible, plus a couple tricks I came up with for this pattern to push it to be even more domestic friendly. :) The only additional thing I highly suggest is a zipper foot (and/or narrow foot) and a stapler as I don't think you'll have the best results you could without those. Hope that helps!
It does take longer to remove, but it is more exact and your work doesn't shift like it can with clips. For me, it's one of those jobs where I am working harder for the best result ☺️
I looked in your recommended and couldn't find the table top hole punch. Is it a leather punch? Do you have a video with this punch? And can you use die's with it to punch shapes?
Nope :) I'm sure it could if it were hot enough for long enough, though. But I've never had that experience. Only direct flame has melted it in my experience
I know that in the pattern it says you CAN use cotton for the exterior but certain pieces HAVE to be vinyl/cork/etc. Is there somewhere that states which pieces those are? I'd really love to use some of my nice cotton but I'm not seeing instructions for that in the pattern or video.
It's the D Ring Connectors and the Gusset Flap. It would be the pieces that require edge painting. Woven used in those places would stretch and wear over time, potentially causing it to lose functionality or durability when used for the purpose I've intended in the pattern. If you want to use woven for the Exterior Zipper Tabs, just double the length and create a bias fold and sew it on as called for after that.
I wondered the same, as I want to make a velvet one. The connectors have to be Either leather, or other non fraying material, or buy Emmaline strap anchors. That’s a nice touch!
Thank you! This one, but if I'm honest I'm not a huge fan of it. It doesn't flatten the staples enough for my preference. www.wawak.com/packaging/fasteners/staples-staplers/ace-clipper-stapler/#sku=ac1
