This game was responsible for ending a decades-long hiatus from the Gundam franchise for me. Soon after it launched, I was deep inside the Gunpla hole and watching Gundam almost constantly. I will remember it forever.
As for Gundam recommendations, I recommend watching the two Gundam Thunderbolt movies (you actually have footage from the first running while asking for recommendations), Iron-Blooded Orphans, and 00 (the source of Allelujah Haptism)

To be honest, i didnt know anything about gundam before this game's announcement, this game got me into gundam and inspired me to work on my 3d animation skills to bring a tribute and some free promotion with the meet the suit videos!

this game had its problems, but it also made me a genuine Guntank fan because of the memes and also that unit being so fun to play. the HG Guntank on my shelf is my little memorial to this game
also while it hurts to see someone not caring for G-Witch, ZZ, and CCA, that's just how it be sometimes. i'd highly recommend Iron-Blooded Orphans if you liked Zeta, that show is a great time by itself and also builds on a lot of Zeta's weirder ideas in ways I found really interesting

Gundam evolution was a game I adored and helped me get so close to a lot of my friends, and also seed a deep love for Gundam in me alongside Witch From Mercury (A show I now hold dear to my heart too).
It was an honor spending the last hours playing games with everyone, the final sendouts were beautiful and those last matches some of the most fun.
I hope some day bandai brings this game back, it deserved so much better.

This is the game that got me into FPS in general. Got to dabble in low level competitive play because of it and had a blast. This was the first video game my wife has ever gotten into. She went from 0 hours of PC FPS games to a gold IV by the Final Shooting. This game was genuinely special to suck us normies with little Gundam and fps experience into the world.
Something you missed from the movement is the concept of "G dashing" which was required for high level play. You move forward, dash and then let go of the forward button and then press your boost, let go and then do it again. It essentially uses only half of the dash bar and allows you to move quickly but keep a dash available at all times.
There were other neat things such as using your shield to reload cancel. You pull your shield up at 75% of your reload and it will instantly finish. This game was genuinely special.
Check out the Crosshair Invitational League. The community created its own tournament league because we wanted to play more.

The game felt cursed. I remember watching Moistcritical make very positive remarks about the game during beta, and I watched xQc's toxic ass chat begin warming up to the game when he played as well. Then Blizzard decided to shit out an unfinished Overwatch 2 killing Gundam Evolution almost instantly. What hurts the most is the game felt miles better than Overwatch 2 but no one took the game seriously, not even Bandai.
At least that's how it felt for me at the time.

I had some fun with this. Some things i would've added/changed would be:
    1. Role labels to reduce confusion for new players like damage, tank, and support
2 A random unit mode where everytime you died, you became a new character which i think is a mode that doesnt get enough love. In random hero modes, like in overwatch, meta isnt a problem, dying while close to your ultimate is a crushing blow to your team.
    3. A team death macth modefor people who want to practice and just get kills
    4. Letting new people join the lobby when someone leaves or disconnects.

I wish this had been advertised. I don't like hero shooters much but being Gundam would have definitely made me try it.
As for series, I grew up with Wing and I remember enjoying it, though by now I don't remember much of it. White Reflection will always be one of my favorite songs.

I don't even like shooters, full stop. G.EVO had to do a lot of heavy lifting to convince me the genre wasn't dead. Despite being free it managed to emulate the feeling of playing TF2 for the first time. A few months of no content and bad balance patches quickly killed that honeymoon period though.
I think Wing is probably the next series I'll check out, although the dude who looks identical to Char sketches me out.

Still remember me and my friend got a full team wipe out with me as guntank weaken them with my G maneuver while he follow up with his flying over head seeing our name on the logs getting those kills together is one of the best moment I have with him, quite sad that the game has potential yet almost get there, tried different Gundam game like battle operation 2 and it didn't work for my liking, still I'll be waiting for Gundam breaker 4 coming this year.

Gundam Evolution was really something special. I miss how hectic this game was and all the inside jokes from the community. When down of 1 teammate and losing the match i just get immersed in character like it's our teams last stand. I'll miss all those interactions in game like when there is a ceasefire with the opposite team, the wootank, everything. This game was stupidly fun i loved it

I had a lot of fun. The attack the core was my fav mode and I adored how the Dynamis handled. But when the shut down notice was given I couldn't get a single match on PSN so I had to drop it. I was hyped as hell when the first trailer was shown. The marketing was piss poor but in my friend group when they saw the trailer, the stink over overwatch scared off a few friends, who like myself hated that game. But as a hard core Gundam fan I wanted this to be good both as a game, and as a gateway to get more Gundam content in the west. I'll never forget the amazing sniper duels I got into, or using Nu's shield to body block. Or the endless missions of being spawn camped. I honestly when an squad mate was down it was always surprised the enemy when I raised them. HOLY CRAP YOU WATCHED YTV!? Almost no one on youtube remembers YTV's anime block.

    Franken. Greg here.
Got meetings to run to (remakes aren't as easy to make as people think!) so I'll be brief. It's great to see how you've grown as a content creator and creative, and it's clear that you have a unique voice that more people should hear. Unlike Bandai Namco with this game (Mahiroo main btw, or as we call it, "let chaos mahireign" XD), I look forward to you sticking with your guns and making videos about topics and ideas that speak to you. You remind me of a young me working on the original Devil Summoner! Never lose that spark!
Well that's all for me. Persona 5 isn't going to remaster itself! Whoops! 🤭 Stay classy, Frankenshop.
PS: Who's that silly little mobile suit that looks like a trash can? Is he some kinda mascot character? Well, he's no Jack Frost, that's all I'm gonna say!

God this is such a good video love letter. If i was more confident in my own words I would make a similar video about "Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier" and how much I loved its single year of life and mourn its death even now a whole year removed. some games are just special regardless of how mainstream or niche they may be. Gundam Evo and FF7:TFS deserved better, Thanks for this video man.

    • @SwanCC
      @SwanCC  7 месяцев назад +3

Cheers dude. Part of me wants to say "you should make that video," but some parts of the process are pretty tedious; especially if you don't have a mic, recording setup, etc. Might be a project worth starting if you have access to that stuff, although I totally get the feeling of not knowing what to say. There's tons of games from my formative years I'd have no idea how to even start writing a script. It'd end up being 2 hours of me saying 'game good, trust me.'

Bit late to the party but i enjoyed my maybe 50 hours of the game, it felt fresh and unique even with the cash shop already starting gunhoe. What I really wanted to share was probably one my last games, back when it was dipping to around 1000 players.
My team was dominating another, the end was in sight on just round one. Two guys on the opposing team DQd, and I immediately called a ceasefire. A feature of the game to prevent people from leaving scottfree was that it would prevent you from queing again until the previous match you left was over, so by calling the ceasefire, it would've made those guys wait an extra 15ish minutes. It was basically WW1 Christmas, everyone was spray painting the walls, jumping on each other, talking in chat. It was a really special moment that made me realize that others also enjoyed the game like i did.
Then the next game my whole team got killed by a cheating sniper, took a break, saw in the balance notes that sniper got another round (now 6 to make sure he can kill an entire team before reloading) and sadly dropped it
Rest in peace sweet space robots

I'm sad that i never got to play this game. I never play many FPS games but this one looked like so much fun.
But hey, with Gundam Breaker 4 on the horizon, maybe that's the thing the GE players need to scratch that Gundam PVP game itch again. even if it's not FPS again, it's still gundams duking it out in melee and ranged combat together either in co-op or pvp. PLUS, you get to make your own custom Gundams with the parts you break off of enemies to add to your collection!

Something worth mentioning is that the dash, hover and boost mechanic prevented peaking corners (unless being a Sniper) gameplay making the game more dynamic in capture maps. As for overwatch you could be bottletrapped in a choke point forcing you to counter play as a flanker (tracer, sombra, etc) to solely create an chance of a opening. As for Gundam Evo, you could easily boost or dash to a position where you could flank, get highground or take space from the enemy.

I managed to get all steam achievements a couple months before the servers shut down with the comp ones (getting bronze silver gold) in one sitting for my bloody placement matches.
    tumour inducing stunlock
lack of map and gamemode verity (best one visually was the one inside a colony)
    atrocious microtransactions
very minimal counterplay to snipers (the map where the 2nd point is on a cargo ship you can literally get spawnkilled from that spawn by a sniper whos near the 1st spawn of the attacking team)
health regened too quickly making health packs and healing abilities mostly uneeded
inconsistent chat filter (sometimes it would sensor random words that weren't even curse words)
lack of advertising and only had 1 twitch drop (they had one tournament with large creators eg the vtuber zentreya)

No idea why Bandai/Sunrise cant figure out how to make a Gundam game that lasts, they had some great feeling games years ago, good example is side story 0079: rise from the ashes. That game felt like you were in a mech, movement felt heavy, felt like a giant mech should. Take that feeling and put it in a multiplayer game, add some fan service like scenes from the episodes players can take part of. Bandai/Sunrise has all the means to make a good gundam game that could last years but they choose to try to copy what's popular instead of pushing what gundam should be as a game.

Honestly, Bandai-Namco should've used the pilots of MS for the "hero" part of this "Hero Shooter". Break the characters into four classes based on whether they were tanky close combat brawlers, ranged sharpshooters, oddballs with unique one-shot gimmicks, and/or all-rounders that had no real specialization but they MADE YOU HURT WHEN THEY HIT YOU. Add a skill tree/tech tree with AT LEAST 5 tiers based on that character's history and lore for the series they appeared in as well as their overall impact on the Gundam franchise as a whole so that playing as that character feels rewarding and unique. On the MS side, have each character be given access to a small handful of famous MS from the Gundam show that character debuted in with the ability to pilot MS from other shows/timelines being unlockable from the aforementioned skill/tech tree. Take some famous locations from each series for arenas, add a cash shop for COSMETIC UNLOCKS ONLY if you must have one, throw all this stuff in the blender, and hit the big "MIX" button. Voila! You have Gundam Versus as a team-based hero shooter FPS with giant badass mechs.

  • @Aerynolae

I played the game for a couple of months when it released. Stopped playing because I found melee MS to be too powerful. When I learned of it getting shutdown, I immediately jumped back to playing. It rekindled my love for it. I played the game all the way to its inevitable fate. I even got the last achievement at the very last day of its service.
I still disliked their decision to remove the global chat though. That one sucked, but it was still fun gesturing at the enemy team and them understandingwhat I was doing. Fun times.

One of the things I rarely see people mention that largely contributed to this game dying was not being able to join matches after they began. Tons of casual games have this to reduce wait time so you can hop in a match and even don't count losses if it already started. This meant that if someone left now even though the game didn't start now you have to wait and get booted. Very quickly this killed the momentum for casual players and for me as well, why get kicked every time someone leaves when I can just play something else that doesn't have that issue.

youre right i didnt even know this game was out- it was that unadvertised- i woulda absolutely eaten this game up as im already a fan of the sources of its inspiration trust me brother- the deaths and mire left behind the team shooters 2 largest bodies was also my experience- i put tons of hours into tf2 and overwatch just to see both slowly abandoned. and one of those more fantastical than the other in how it fell off. im sad to have missed it- sounded like a blast. maybe like another game i nearly missed out on (starwars galaxies) it will someday comeback through fans- or maybe even get picked up by another interested studio like another sleeper fav wich you should get when it comes if you like moba shooters- Gigantic. its died already and coming back- and im gonna play it everyday once it is. savor it even. not many second chances in this industry so please check out Gigantic when it hits steam- even if you walk away not liking it give it the chance so we can have it be permanent.

I think they had one tournament near the game's launch that had influencers involved and maybe a Vtuber?
It's too bad because there was a lot of fresh ideas, but there was a definite lack of experience in how to run a live service competitive game. No shoot Bandai Namco was going to keep the project afloat while they gained that experience.
G.EVO getting the plug pulled feels like a cultural difference. I'm used to seeing western live service games stick around way past expiry, becoming a bot riddled mess like whatever the hell is going on with TF2.
Also you blew my mind with this Gigantic game. This came out in 2017?

From the start i heard about Gundam Evolution, i know that this game will not last for long, eventhough i'm kinda shocked how fast the game closed. A few factor that i think why this game failed are :
    1. Not enough advertisement. Not enough people know about this game, even in gundam community
    2. They're to late jumping on hero shooter hype. The market already full of hero shooter and already feel a bit stale
    3. I don't think first person shooter is a good game for gundam. One of the fun of gundam is seeing your ms move and attack enemies. Gundam evo on the other hand, with its first person perspective, you can only see your hand and nothing else
    4. There's no iconic sound or music from the anime. Another one of important aspect of gundam that sometimes people don't realise or care is the sound effect, for example like newtype flash, beam rifle shot, trans-am, etc. Gundam evo only using a generic sound effect and it's really bad
    5. The monetization, nuff said
All of this really make gundam evo feel like a generic hero shooter with gundam skin, not something unique in the already stale market of heo shooter

I'll say this i regards to there being to many hero shooters and it's over saturated that's both true and u trust there's like 3 hero shooters that exist
      TF2, paladins and overwatch
If gundam evolution got advertised and came out around spring last year when overwatch was in its dark period I think the game might have done alot better exspecially if they fixed the monetization around that time sooo many people wanted a alternative to overwatch and gundam evolution is the closest any hero shooter feels to overwatch

Honestly I love the game in compare to overwatch because of 2 main things:
    1. There are no role restriction, hell there aren't real define role in the first place
    2. the lethality of the game where healing isn't as effective, character isn't as fast or as small and how high dmg trading can be it make for a intense game where you rarely can ever tank and outheal dmg
At the end of the day, nothing feel better than telling a charging Barbie to piss off with a GM's shield bash and a shot to the head

Well Char's Coutnerattack is to my knowledge considered pretty good, even if some of the characters are...frustrating, then there's Quess. And Double Zeta has generally been heavily disliked, though there have been people who came around on it in the last 5 or so years.
08th MS Team is generally considered pretty good(and the one of the three 80s/90s OVAs I'd recommend), so is 0080 War in the Pocket, while 0083 Stardust Memory seems to swing between positive and negative views. If you want something with very good art and a decent story that's rather different from all of the other Gundam series so far, then give Turn A a shot since it's got a bit of a Studio Ghibli feel in it's art style outside of the mechs. Gundam X is also generally considered to be one of if not the best of the 90s alt universe Gundam series. Otherwise, kind of depends on taste.
And for me Gundam Evolution was the first game like Overwatch I played. Had a fair bit of fun with it too, pity in some ways there's no preserved version of it. But I guess it's also at least somewhat better than an on life support version that's just slowly breaking and languishing over time.

It had some good ideas but I feel like in a strange way, the Gundam IP itself was holding it back. Restricting the design range of the various 'heroes'. And god knows what other stupid red tape was in place.
I feel like either they should've attached it to Gundam Build/Breaker, with custom mobile suits and their players as character avatars with voice lines. It would've given the game more charm, as opposed to just blank mobile suits with 0 context. I mean as a Gundam fan, of course I know what all these mobile suits are, even obscure shit that I wonder why they even made playable - like the Asshimar. But I don't see how it was even bringing Gundam to a non-Gundam fanbase, which I thought was their objective - they wanted this to be a potential gateway for a new audience to the rest of Gundam. If this was truly the case, then I don't think holding onto the existing roster isn't necessary. If they tied it to the Buildverse, they could even do little Battlelogues to introduce the MSes to people, like a parallel to the Overwatch animated shorts.
The cosmetic game was also weak as fuck, just being surface recolours while competing games have full on different models. I don't know if it's because they couldn't change the design too much due to IP representation issues(hence why not just go all Build/Breaker on this shit) or maybe more likely - they just lacked the budget. Assuming there wasn't some IP-representation redtape going on, I think they could've just swapped in whole different mobile suits as the highest rarity skins. Like Banshee could've been a Unicorn skin, Astraea could've been an Exia skin. Classic MS09 DOM for the DOM Trooper. Zaku and GM have a gazillion variants. Yes maybe some of those MS 'skins' could've been their own playable characters, but I think there's plenty they could've picked that had little to no chance of being playable due to just being too damn similar.
The MS choices were weird overall, and a lot of them had to be padded out with 'generic abilities'. Which to me just feels weak. Like the RX-78-2 had some random fucking napalm bomb ult. Based on the ult icon I get the feeling it was meant to be the 'Super Napalm' attachment to the rifle, but it got shitcanned for some reason. A bunch of other MSes had random arse mines, turrets and grenades. Why even pick those MSes as part of the lineup if they are so lacking? I get including the really iconic stuff, but there was plenty of strange obscure shit in there that got picked over far more iconic stuff. Guntank's suicide bomb corefighter was also goofy as fuck if you were familiar with it....
They really shouldn't have tarried so long after the beta, releasing just a month before Overwatch 2. And really should've got their heads out of their asses regarding various things like regions and monetization.
I think there's definitely room for a class-less 'hero shooter' with more flex play all around. I also grew tired of OW in that it felt like there was a certain way the game wanted you to play, and it really punished you for trying to do your own thing. It kinda left no room for any creativity.

To be brutally honest, this game was doomed to fail. Despite being a Gundam fan, I had no interest in it at all. Nor do I have interest in GBO and GBO2, and Vs Gundam games anymore. They're basically all the same game just different gameplay wise. Just Arena style Shooter/Fighting games. Even Gundam Breaker is technically like that. I actually consider this period a Dark Age when it comes to Gundam video games because that is literally all we are given anymore, and often they're not even that stellar. With the last really interesting Gundam games being Gundam Senki 0081 and Gundam Unicorn both for the PS3, and ya that was a long time ago.
Meanwhile something like Ace Combat 7 cames out and gives a better Gundam experience but without the Gundams. I don't want Gundam games that have Gundams in it, I want Gundam games that make me feel like I'm actually in a Gundam anime. That is why this game was doomed to fail. It's designed for an audience that isn't exactly a Gundam fan audience. A huge chunk of Gundam fans are fans because of the characters/stories, not the mechs themselves.

That was my problem with Gundam Evolution, it just felt like an overwatch style shooter and never felt like I was piloting a giant mechanical robot. Even overwatch does a better job of making me feel like I'm piloting a mech with D.va.
Also Gundam Evolutions' maps were basic, small, and boring. They really missed out by not having aerial space combat and massive maps... fighting in hallways is not Gundam...

It's a shame, for all the people who called it an Overwatch ripoff Gundam Evolution was way more fun to play lol, at least in my opinion. The universal boost/dodge/hover mechanics + only one support with limited healing + no tank characters with barriers + less gimmicky character kits made the gunplay and engagements way more enjoyable than Overwatch ever could be.
Only if Bamco cared about making a good service instead of trying to make a money farm.

I LOVED this game. But my issue is the fact the developers were GENUINELY LAZY.
"Adding more than one suit a season is too much stress on our team😏"

To be fair, BandaiNamco are notoriously stingy in funding their game studios.
Plus, their core design of copying OW heavily crippled in designing the future mobile suits.
