I know I am 2 years late to this video. But it was an excellent watch while also playing the free trial. And also FF8 has been my upmost favorite of the Final Fantasys.

The Rinoa theory is the craziest I have read. It is the only one that surpasses reality. It makes way more sense than what the creator intended. I cannot think of any other theory that has this effect.

I don't think FF VIII was that complicated. It was my first FF to play and I did not know english at the time and I figured it out anyway without internet back then and believe me, I am not a genius and I did not know until you made this video that you could get magic out of cards and I still finished the game with no issues. Secondly, why do you say Final Fantasy VIII was the first soundtrack from Nobuo with Choir and orchestra when he clearly did earlier with One Winged Angel in FF VII? I agree that FF VIII is potentially the best soundtrack historically, and no, I don't think FF XIV is a potential candidate, is a wider OST but not better.

I played 8 for the first time at like eleven. I wasn’t bothered by the beginning of the game. Games are supposed to be challenging, games should have a learning curve

Man, if you love this game, great! But this was my first RPG as a kid and it left a bad taste in my mouth, the draw and junctioning systems convinced me that maybe I just did not like RPGs, it would be years till I decided to play another RPG and actually enjoy it

Final Fantasy 8 was not my first. That was 2 (really 4) on the SNES. It's not the best Final Fantasy. I think that distinction belongs to 10, personally. But it *is* my favorite game in the series. I love it. I love its sometimes strange and convoluted story. I love its characters. I love its junction system and the way it rewards game knowledge. I love the GFs, with Diabolos, Quezacotl and DOOMTRAIN still being some of my favorites. I both long for a remake and simultaneously hope that they won't ever touch it again.

My biggest issues are the junctioning system and the fact that it negates any and all traditional sense of RPG progression and replaces it with tedium and psychological torture as well as the story being needlessly convoluted. I'm sure plenty of people enjoy the intricacies of the junctioning system and clearly a lot of people see depth where I see convolution in the story, but those two issues absolutely ruin the experience for me personally. Glad people are enjoying it, but for me it was a huge letdown back in the day - luckily 9 reinvigorated my passion for the series shortly after.

It's funny that people think this game has no fans despite being one of the most popular RPGs of all time.

It's a lost opportunity for a truly great game. Would require an overhaul mod to address the major flaws (level scaling, summons etc).

Squall and Cloud are both emotionally and MENTALLY complex and realistic characters that people remember as either edgy or in Cloud's case, they might forget he isn't a silent protagonist, if they haven't played a lot of FFVII. In other words, a lot of complaints about the Playstation Final Fantasy protagonists just seem like people not paying much attention to them.

This game is universally dumped on but I had to play it like all the others. I knew junctions would be a learning hurdle, but I was motivated so I did my homework. I had to do more than usual research on the mechanics of this game that usual. After a while I totally understood and got the hang of it. Once I could really access and master the mechanics, including Triple Triad, I was excited to realize that FF8 is in my opinion the best final fantasy comparing it to 7, 9 and 10. Im in love with all those games so this is big praise for FF8. But I had the most fun with this one and the aesthetic really grew on me. Squall ended up being my favorite protag from the PlayStation era. Never has the mass consensus been so wrong about a game.

It had some good ideas but I feel like in a strange way, the Gundam IP itself was holding it back. Restricting the design range of the various 'heroes'. And god knows what other stupid red tape was in place. I feel like either they should've attached it to Gundam Build/Breaker, with custom mobile suits and their players as character avatars with voice lines. It would've given the game more charm, as opposed to just blank mobile suits with 0 context. I mean as a Gundam fan, of course I know what all these mobile suits are, even obscure shit that I wonder why they even made playable - like the Asshimar. But I don't see how it was even bringing Gundam to a non-Gundam fanbase, which I thought was their objective - they wanted this to be a potential gateway for a new audience to the rest of Gundam. If this was truly the case, then I don't think holding onto the existing roster isn't necessary. If they tied it to the Buildverse, they could even do little Battlelogues to introduce the MSes to people, like a parallel to the Overwatch animated shorts. The cosmetic game was also weak as fuck, just being surface recolours while competing games have full on different models. I don't know if it's because they couldn't change the design too much due to IP representation issues(hence why not just go all Build/Breaker on this shit) or maybe more likely - they just lacked the budget. Assuming there wasn't some IP-representation redtape going on, I think they could've just swapped in whole different mobile suits as the highest rarity skins. Like Banshee could've been a Unicorn skin, Astraea could've been an Exia skin. Classic MS09 DOM for the DOM Trooper. Zaku and GM have a gazillion variants. Yes maybe some of those MS 'skins' could've been their own playable characters, but I think there's plenty they could've picked that had little to no chance of being playable due to just being too damn similar. The MS choices were weird overall, and a lot of them had to be padded out with 'generic abilities'. Which to me just feels weak. Like the RX-78-2 had some random fucking napalm bomb ult. Based on the ult icon I get the feeling it was meant to be the 'Super Napalm' attachment to the rifle, but it got shitcanned for some reason. A bunch of other MSes had random arse mines, turrets and grenades. Why even pick those MSes as part of the lineup if they are so lacking? I get including the really iconic stuff, but there was plenty of strange obscure shit in there that got picked over far more iconic stuff. Guntank's suicide bomb corefighter was also goofy as fuck if you were familiar with it.... They really shouldn't have tarried so long after the beta, releasing just a month before Overwatch 2. And really should've got their heads out of their asses regarding various things like regions and monetization. I think there's definitely room for a class-less 'hero shooter' with more flex play all around. I also grew tired of OW in that it felt like there was a certain way the game wanted you to play, and it really punished you for trying to do your own thing. It kinda left no room for any creativity.

The first FF I ever played, the first Playstation game as well. I was around the age of 11. Before that I only played colourful Mario and Donkey Kong games, and then this game...I did not understand a thing about it, but I was completely hypnotized by the realistic graphics (they were phenomenal at the time), the intro, the characters, the music. It was something from another dimension. It is for me in hindisght the first step from innocent childhood to young adulthood. It will always be in my top 10 games of all time.

As a final fantasy player since Nintendo. 8 is about 4th-7th best.

Well Char's Coutnerattack is to my knowledge considered pretty good, even if some of the characters are...frustrating, then there's Quess. And Double Zeta has generally been heavily disliked, though there have been people who came around on it in the last 5 or so years. 08th MS Team is generally considered pretty good(and the one of the three 80s/90s OVAs I'd recommend), so is 0080 War in the Pocket, while 0083 Stardust Memory seems to swing between positive and negative views. If you want something with very good art and a decent story that's rather different from all of the other Gundam series so far, then give Turn A a shot since it's got a bit of a Studio Ghibli feel in it's art style outside of the mechs. Gundam X is also generally considered to be one of if not the best of the 90s alt universe Gundam series. Otherwise, kind of depends on taste. And for me Gundam Evolution was the first game like Overwatch I played. Had a fair bit of fun with it too, pity in some ways there's no preserved version of it. But I guess it's also at least somewhat better than an on life support version that's just slowly breaking and languishing over time.

This was facinating to watch from a long time player. I will say most if not all of your problems you have with the game are solved in the later expansions. Aside from obviously the linear focus on the story. On that subject I will say when I came over from wow years ago I had the same issue. Particularly around unlocking classes and just wanting to dungeon grind to level. However I will say this issue that I had became less and less important the further I got. By the end you realize while the problem is still a problem, its worth the trade off that the story facilitates for the game.

When I first played this game, I was 8. I barely understood the junction system and I STILL loved this game the most. FF7 was sooo overrated and I didn't care for it. But 8? So dope. I never grinded for spells. I drew a few each battle, then finished the enemy off. I had a nice balance of junctioning and leveling. It's not a big deal.

Idc i am a straight up apologist simp for this game, it was my first FF and I had it on a demo disc as a little kid and I don't even think I beat it lol. I got it wayyy later in my life and broke it cuz I just read the manuals, literally the game itself tells you how to break it if you pick up some subtext and follow what they all tell you. This game just hates impatient people with possible severe ADHD obviously not all cases lol. But this game is great if you're not in the former camp, I have ADD (one of them I got diagnosed as kid but they tried to say both but I doubt that's 100% true) and I fell in love with it but I do see where the criticisms are coming from, I do get it. BUT NOT THE HATE!!! lmao it don't deserve that.

I don't see how any of the "flaws" mentioned are actually flaws. It's just a unique game from FF7. FF8 is a great game and possibly the best in the FF series. The story is deep, interpretive, and I'd argue the best out of all the FF's.

Never considered Rinoa as Ultimecia.... now I can't unsee it
