The science and technology minister libelled a senior academic with extremely dangerous and inciting untruths that could put someone’s life and career in danger. She committed a crime.
She needs to resign.
She claimed in her 'apology' letter than she didn't imply anyone had done anything illegal.
Her own government made 'expressing support for Hamas' punishable by up to 14 years.
She even lied in her apology. A woman utterly lacking integrity.
Depends. If the civil service told her. Then its a different matter.
@@adenwellsmith6908 If the civil service told me something like that I would demand evidence. And pictures of Spiderman. And then when presented by the evidence I would be very very careful with how I delt with this information. None of that seems to have happened here.
Would it surprise you? Wouldn't surprise me. Top civil servants lie repeatedly to protect their arses. I know from experience.
It fits the fact. She pays damages from public funds. Came out of public funds because a civil servant told her porkies.

@@adenwellsmith6908 If the civil service told you to jump would you do it? She is a minister elected and appointed to have complete oversight of that department, if she is incapable of doing so, she should not have been in post in the first place. This slander and abuse of power and process requires her immediate resignation.
She was questioned about the £15,000 and her attempt to smear Professor Sang at a meeting in Bradford-on-Avon last week. She's the Tory candidate in the new Melksham & Devizes constituency and a group of us are doing our best to prevent her returning to Parliament on a minority vote. A willingness to vote tactically will be crucial.

Good. Here are some facts - It has been reported that it was a press release from Policy Exchange (a right wing think tank) that prompted her initial concerns.
The civil servant who blocked answering the question on surveillance, Sarah Munby, was previously at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and is the one that Henry Staunton alleges told him to slow payments to postmasters so that they could hobble to the election.
This whole thing stinks.

Precisely. She was alerted by one of the Tufton Street so-called "think tanks" who seem to do little other than trawl social media looking for new culture wars. The question that should have been asked, but wasn't, was who paid someone in Tufton Street to do that?
A right wing think tank with zero transparency
Just hearing her voice and the condescending tone in it, I know EXACTLY what type of person she is. She needs to lose her seat at the next general election quick. Zero remorse or sincerity. These Tories are beyond contempt.
Unlikely to happen. Very Tory seat. Once upon a time the LibDems held it but unlikely to happen these days and I can’t see anyone round here voting in Labour. (I live in her seat). 🤔🤷
So her seat of 'Chippenham' has historically been a very safe seat for the Tories, however between 2010-15 it was a Lib Dem constituency, so maybe, especially if their is tactical voting.
@@arghjayem surely it can be flipped
@@matty7758 One would hope so. At the last election she had a majority of just under 11,300, which was well down from the 16000 majority she had before. With a bit of tactical voting, this seat could go to the Liberal Democrats.
100%. You can tell by her paralanguage she doesn't give a shit.
so she abused her position and publicly defame someone based on their political views, how on earth does she still have a job?
Because she is a Tory. The defining characteristics of the current crop is moral bankruptcy, corruption and a total disregard for any normal standard of human decency. Her attitude is common in the cabinet post Johnson "How dare you oiks challenge me, I am a member of the governing party"
Tory lies matter
👍🏾
And got the taxpayer to dig her out a hole. It’s should have come out her own pocket. She should resign
And the taxpayer picked up the tab (£15,000) for her gross incompetence. Why is she still in the post? If Rishi had any authority or leadership qualities, he would've sacked her immediately.
The cost is a great deal more than £15k. Both sides legal fees will run into many more thousands and we should be told how much exactly.
Why should she be kept in post? Well, believe it or not, there is nobody left who wants anything to do with a "dead hamster" government.
The Tory view of public money is that it is theirs to squander. Hence the billions wasted on Covid in addition to the corrupt tendering overseen by Michael Gove, et al.

Not just incompetent, but a liar as well. According to an 18 November 2023 Guardian article: "Fifteen government departments have been monitoring the social media activity of potential critics and compiling “secret files” in order to block them from speaking at public events, the Observer can reveal."
Can you imagine being pulled into a meeting at work and spouting this sort of tripe and thinking it will all be ok?
... having cost your employer (in this case, the British public) £15,000 for spouting reckless nonsense. Anyone else would be sacked - but she has zero shame or regret. Vile.

How this woman has the brass neck to remain in her post is just breathtaking!
They are the ‘Rich Taxpayers Alliance’…they don’t give a damn about the tax bills of ordinary people. It’s basically a tax avoidance front for massive corporations and millionaires.
It has been reported that it was a press release from Policy Exchange (a right wing think tank) that prompted her initial concerns.
Lies as easily as she breathes.
So standard Tory then.

She said her first duty is to always do the right thing ! So why didn't she resign. Every unelected member of this disgrace of a government is corrupt and incompetent.
Her definition of "doing the right thing" is using her department to fan the flames of whatever confected culture war she thinks will help the Tories.
She fails to mention that, according to general reporting, the academics’ remarks were originally drawn to the government’s attention by the Right-Wing, Tufton Street-based think-tank, Policy Exchange. And the Committee fails to develop this source, that is… Why is Policy Exchange ‘informing’ Departments of tweets made by individuals?
Civil Servant: "I'm not going to give you an hour by hour, day by day of who what where...". How dare she! Who the **** does she think she is? She is accountable to every British citizen and unless it's of critical national security should be prepared to answer fully and truthfully any question put to her! What a vile self-righteous creature.
Another Oxford PPE graduate. That whole department should be disbanded.
Minor edit; that answer came from the elected minister. A civil servant would have pulled out a folder when asked that question and provided an day by day, hour by hour account of all advice they provided, to whom, when and where.

What a performance! Does she really think anyone is going to be taken in by all the rigmarole - that ends with her using £15,000 of taxpayers money, for HER mistake. Her motivations don't matter - her lack of ability does matter. Apologies do NOT cut it!

One very crafted response. She's not capable of coming up with that on her own, most likely sent from some think tank to cover themselves. She took action on gossip and hyperbole not government sources
Exactly the scriptwriters were busy for a few hours cobbling that word salad.
Probably the same think tank that told her to raise the original post. These shadowy figures need to be dragged out into the daylight!
It has been reported that it was a press release from Policy Exchange (a right wing think tank) that prompted her initial concerns. This is even worse than ‘gossip’.
This woman is loathsome. She only votes for things that gets her promoted. Now she’s using taxpayers money to pay for her incompetence. It would have taken two minutes to get clarification on any messages before spouting nonsense. This decision was hers and she should be paying for it, not us. Unacceptable.
Why are they not asking Michelle Donelan about the fact that no one was taling about these academic's twitter feed until the right wing Think Tank, the Policy Exchange had flagged it? It was literally a press release that prompted the intervention by Michelle Donelan.
'Policy Exchange' the think-tank that just keeps giving....

Yes, we've heard it all before Miss Malignent Incompetence.
She needed sacking. The coward Sunak won’t do it. The Tories are toast.
I'm sorry but it's one thing to notify a body which you have responsibility for of concerns you have about an appointment and is clearly part of her ministerial responsibilities. However subsequently publishing her concerns on social media is not and she not have recourse to public funds to discharge the defamation case she was facing. It's particularly egregious when the accusations where publicised before any investigation had been made. The lady is being economical with the actuality, a Tufton Street think tank is the source of the allegations which where based on the academic liking a number of 'left' posts in the past, the report provide no evidence of person concerned supporting Hamas and the subsequent investigation only found a like of a post expressing concern about the situation in Gaza with no direct reference to Hamas. This is what prompted the out of court settlement and indicates that the Minister went far beyond her ministerial duties and casts serious doubts on her judgement and suitability for the role she is currently in. It also brings the competence of the Civil Servants advising her into serious doubt.
👍🏾
Thanks, that's a good clear summary.
So she initiates an investigation because an academic links to a Guardian article that criticises the government. And doesn't see an issue with that stance.
Has she been sacked? this is shocking.
Never forget this! Who is the spectacled blocker next to Donelan who refused to give an answer to a direct question? Shocking arrogance and disdain.

The problem with this minister and the whole government, they over share on social media to try and show how tough they are being and it ends up with consequences like this. If they could just govern like they’re meant to to, and raise things properly without showing it online too then that would be great
she should be paying out her own pocket but she should really be in front of a judge for defamation and anything else they can throw at her.

Whomever gave the poor and inaccurate advice needs training, an HR review and possibly a note in their HR file…
