Here’s the disturbing reason why barber poles are red, white, and blue

- Many believe the distinct colors of the barber poles are due to patriotism. But the truth is much more disturbing. Long ago, barbers used to do more than just cut hair. They performed surgical procedures like bloodletting. The striped poles are a legacy of their practice of bloodletting.

it's because barbers also used to practice blood-letting.
red represents blood.
white represents bandages.
blue could represent vains or it could be "a nod at the US flag" but they are unsure.
Saved you like two minutes
RKellyIsABird ty.
Saved my life bro
Thanks so much man
Thanks for spoiling it -_-
RKellyIsABird was hoping someone would bust the click bait. Thank you!

Captain J. Dreadful I thought it was red white and blue because everyone loves America
"Yeah just a little off the top and cut my veins"
lance bickle 😂😂😂
lol
lance bickle lMfAO
Because even in this way too long video, you can't explain what blood letting is.....
"Bloodletting (or blood-letting) is the withdrawal of blood from a patient to cure or prevent illness and disease. Bloodletting was based on an ancient system of medicine in which blood and other bodily fluids were regarded as 'humours' that had to remain in proper balance to maintain health."
-wikipedia
Gravitate thank you I really didn't feel like googling that...
Fun fact: George Washington died because they took too much blood out of him during the process of bloodletting
dude thank you
Thanks!
Gravitate Wikipedia isn't a dependable source
So that nigga from flapjack who used to cut hair and be a surgeon was no joke...
Can't believe they stopped making episodes for flapjack.
JrodTV suuuuurgery
JrodTV Lol just realized that
lol true
JrodTV I was just thinking about that 😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Barber have been" you got a typo
how
Barbers*
It should be "Barbers have been" (needs to be plural)
tacticalbacon25 _ shoes repair lmao
ik i wasint the only one who noticed that
I thought they were just red and white
Jennifer Montgomery nigga Mandela affect is bull shit
Jennifer Montgomery lmao please stop yourself
DearEartha older models are. it even says in the video that blue was added later
Laura Sanchez how is it proof? that is the worst theory to exist. just because you remembered something wrong and others remembering it wrong only solidifying how wrong you remembered it doesn't make it real.
The one at the barber shop I go to is just red and white.
They also performed dentistry.
Damian Grouse
exactly!! the white is the teeth the blue is the barbersol or whatever it's called and the red is the medical. they got their info wrong. people way back when didn't read! they just knew you could get medical dental or a haircut by the colour of the liquid in the window since they did all of it they put all of it on the poll
They also used to perform gender reassignment surgery
Napkinatorz Pretty sure that's nowadays, not previously
Aaron Hanson its called a sarcasm
Napkinatorz 😂😂😂
Ted Bear someone should end their life because they didnt get a joke? im sure people love to hang out with you
I identify as a boneless fry
Now all I have to do is learn what "blood-letting" is.
KMS 5252 since there was no blood bags and modern serum tubes etc. they used to just cut the vein, let the blood spill and then bandage it
Google George Washington's Death
Blood letting was draining a small amount of blood however sometimes they bleed a patient to death. They didn't know what they were doing.
blue is the color you turned when they let out to much blood ! !
G. 97 Hughey lol yup that makes sense then a maybe that or this.
I read something once that barbers were practicing dentistry and surgery. Red was the blood from their work: tooth extractions, surgery and bloodletting. White was for the grooming: haircut and shaving. And my personal blue stripe theory that while the job had a certain degree of technical expertise, it was still consider 'blue collar'.
Now we know where Doctor Barber came from
Wow....I'm so disturbed now! I hope I can sleep after that! Red is blood, white is for cream that they shaved with and blue is for pen ink. The one thing the video got right was, that barbers use to do more than cut hair! Two thumbs up for me 👍👍
ok blood letting isnt that disturbing almost all cultures at one point have tried it. It just goes to show how much western medicine has evolved and its good for us to remember both the good and the bad from our past.
Barber: What you want?
Me: I wanna look good for my funeral.
Barber: Say no more.
Maybe the pole was blue in the first place? And then placing the bandage with blood on top added the white and red?
How is this disturbing?
Um no, not to sound edgy. Blood isn't disturbing to me. And thanks for making it blank to make me understand it harder.
SpoopyKing You're so edgy that a emo wants you to cut his wrist
KFC Bucket Just because I do not find it disturbing doesn't mean I'm edgy. LOL.
Hunter RIP| Nice name.
They're veins strapped to a white pole which someone is sucking from the bottom to make the illusion of spinning while dead people are lying at the top in a pile with a knife to cut them open so that's why it's infinite.
So apparently the deranged barber from flapjack is actually historically accurate
Walk to a barbershop:
How much is for blood letting?
1:10 "Bloodletting eventually went out of practice" isn't true. Hemochromatosis is a disease where bloodletting/phlebotomy may be prescribed to help with or cure symptoms.
What was the whole purpose of this? i find blood letting unneccessary
The term Barber used to be another form of the term Doctor, they did more than just surgical procedures; they were in essence medieval doctors.
I will never look at the barbers the same way again
Wrong. The BLUE was added to let people know if the barbershop was a pickup point for the US Postal service. Since some small towns didnt have a post office. The barbershop, being a central meeting point, was chosen. Barbershops would only display red & white if no mail services offered. Hence, why people remember both. The sign was to let people who were passing through know what additional services are available. Red for medical, Blue for mail.
but why
star spangled warrior Bloodletting was believed to be good and healthy back then, like a lot of things
star spangled warrior if ya want to get historic not much was known about the body back then. Autopsys were banned by the catholic church and everyone was uneducated compared to our knowledge of the body nowadays. The knowledge of human Anatomy was basically that we had 4 systems in our bodies called humors. If we were sick then they were unbalanced so removing blood from the body was thought to balance things out and release toxins
If y'all didn't know. Barber poles are supposed to be illusions. The idea is that is looks like an elevator where the pole is moving straight up. As soon as I realized this I can't unsee it and it's driving me crazy
Spinning Barber Poles are great -- they can tell you from a far distance is the shop is open or not.
This may be 1 of the reasons for the colors on the poles BUT.........
The poles use to be on eather side of the chair below the arm rest and use to have GROOVES cut out in them. to let the blood flow down to a bucket that was below.
The patient would grab the top of the pole which was a metal ball and have his or her wrist cut, letting the blood flow down the ball, down the groves into the bucket below!!!
I ain't gonna look at a barbershop the same way again
Wow interesting facts I never new about Thank You for Sharing this information!!!
No blue in the history of barber poles! It’s just red and white. As usual the US sees a way of adding a colour for their own means. No blue should be present I’m afraid.
This makes so much sense now! There was a barber surgeon in the cartoon "flapjack"
in the uk there only red and white
Anyone else just remember Dr. Barber from The Marvellous Misadventures of Flapjack?
It's for when there's a hood barber and they are letting you know crips and bloods are welcome
Shocking, something from the past was gross.
Theory 3 for the blue color: They didn't want the poles to look like huge candy canes
Sure glad the barbers don't do blood letting or treating sick people any more.
Glad I'm Asian descent because in my culture in the past, barbers only cut hairs and doctors only treat sick people.
they still practice bloodletting in Delhi..
In Tibetan Buddhism there are three main life force energy channels. Red masculine, blue feminine and white the marriage of the two or neutral energy. Male is positive energy and female negative. If you look at an anatomy picture veins and arteries are represented in red and blue. Arteries carry oxygen to the cells, and veins carry co2 to the lungs to be released. Both arteries send And and receive something showing that feminine and masculine are no different yet polar opposites interdependent on each other. Oxygen is a yang energy or positive masculine force and co2 a feminine negative yin force in the human body. Every time I see a barber pole I think of this and the electromagnetism(North Pole make South Pole female) of a human bio electric field. Life is interesting and full of synchronisities
I find this not at all disturbing. They also did dental work. They had the sharp tools.
practiced in England originally so unlikely to be a reference to our flag
It's... It's... It's because the first barber was from Holland... ...right?
Barber: What you need?
Me: emo kid wrist
Barber: say no more fam
I don't think it was added because of the US flag, because those colours are used in loads of flags including that of France and the UK
France’s flag 🇫🇷
and also another theory the color of the pole represent Flag of Thailand
Always remember kids... don't believe everything on the internet
So now I understand what that barber from flapjack was....
Bloodletting was probably a lot safer than taking modern day medications and cheaper too.
I remember learning about this in world history
nothing disturbing about this it's historical stuff that everyone should know
Son that explains Doctor Barber from flapjack
I'm just gonna think of this as the colors of our flag and say no more
Wow I just happened to pass by the channel because on of the videos were trending and I was right on time
My grandfather Said the barbers were "Dentists" too
What exactly is disturbing about that?
so the barber from the cartoon flap jack is doing this low key? 🤔
what I'm concerned about is: who the hell did research on a barber pole because it was res white and blue. and why the hell did they take the time to do research about it when they can be doing something productive? (unless they're bored) this kinda surprised me though
this is why i believed what
Odd1Sout said....
So what does the spinning represent?
How is that disturbing that's sounds awesome that they were also sergeants expect that there were no pain killers but still.
I really shouldn't have watched this before going to the barbers tomorrow lol
Sir can I please just have a #3 on the sides and a trim at the top...
Never knew it had blue
There is nothing "inside" *or* "business"!
Barbers did blood letting: used to hang the rags out.
Someone's getting lazy.
👎
There might be another theory that all of the colors represent the American flag 🇺🇸💈 as those are all of their colors on there.
In England it's just white and red
Barbara would also do many other things like pull out a bad tooth or other stuff to I don't know
Suddenly Dr Barber from flapjack makes more sense!!
I WAS LITERALLY WONDERING WHY WHEN THIS VID CAME OUT
if these came after the practice died then I want to meet the pole salesman who was able to convince so many barbers to buy this stupid thing.
I got my hair cut today, now I can't look at that thing the same
I cringe more about the haircuts than the blood letting.
I have the one for sale, from Fort Monmouth, NJ Barber Shop. $1,200
Maybe explain wtf is blood letting
💈 who knew this emoji existed I didn’t
wait no they used to be your barber, doctor, and dentist
is this a repost?
I really don't know why blood letting fell out of practice...seems sane to me.
wait my barber polo is just red and white... shit
How is that disturbing 🤔
I don't understand what is disturbing abput this.
Pole's turning the wrong way?
Is it bad that I already knew this
5th Animated
No, Knowledge is power
Or maybe it's just a popular color.
Only in america not in uk or anywhere else
the Blue also represents INK. because barbershop also... do tattoos
Omg, Dr. Barber from Flapjack! And they say T.V. doesn't teach you anything
Figured it had something to do with racial discrimination
Um...Thailand flag.
B-but it's toothpaste
Sounds like Dr.Barber of flapjack
More complete and utter internet horseshit propagated by companies that for some reason, people trust to report the truth.
Ugh.
Yeah, Theodd1lsout already told us.
"Lemme get a fade with a Zero on my veins"
what is the movie at the 0.13 picture?
What was the name of the music used?
