  • Exploring a forest on the remote Nevada/California border that is home to the oldest trees on Earth! These beautifully warped, twisted trees are up to 5,000 years old...making them the oldest living species on the entire planet. The oldest tree in this grove is 5,066 years old and the second oldest is over 4800...but they are unmarked, to protect them from vandals.

When I was working in Bakersfield, used to go up into the Sierra Nevada on weekend campouts.
Went on a hike up Sirretta Peak, near a place called Big Meadows in Kern County and discovered Foxtail Pines, which also look knarly and have purple cones.
    Foxtail Pines very rare also.

A blast from the past. My college geology class took a field trip to the White Mountains and the bristle cone forest years ago. We also found trilobite fossils in some of the nearby shale deposits. Very interesting ecology in that area. That guy - Methuselah, from the Bible, was said to have lived 969 years - a mere whippersnapper compared to the tree that bears his name. Cheers.

Hey Thanks! I've read about this place and always wondered what the grove and terrain looked like. Yes, they count the rings and use something called Carbon 14 analysis that gives a very accurate age to living and once living things. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how old these trees are. They lived through heat, fire from lighting strike, high winds, ice and snow, very major earthquakes and global things like super volcano eruption and meteor strikes! Methuselah and other trees were two thousand years old during the times of ancient Rome and Greece...

I know!!! It's so amazing, I freaking love these trees. A group of artists are even making a giant metal sculpture called Methuselah, and bringing it to Burning Man this year. I will definitely be checking that out!!

Thanks so much for sharing this video! 3 years ago I climbed Mt. Whitney, and had also planned on hiking the Methuselah Trail on the way home, but by the time I got to the visitor center it was getting late and I was super exhausted, so I didn't do the hike to the bristlecone pines, a decision I've regretted ever since, as I now live very far away from the area. Nice to be able to hike vicariously through your video!

I remember visiting the grove as a young kid sometime in the mid sixties . As best I can recall the 2 trees were the Methuselah and the other was the patriarch. At the time they were both marked. Will have to look back through old slides to see If any photos exist.

Have you considered giving tours of these different locations, aside from the nude location photo shoots? I own a Sikorsky S-76B that holds 12 people - This is what you need for tours and for quick exploration. On cold mornings I spotted the steam from hot pools of water that are yet un-mapped and 30 miles from any roads. The real cool hot springs are the ones you can only fly too. Sahra, you need a pilots license trust me! There is too much your missing out on down there at ground level. Learn to fly girl!

Methuselah is unmarked because of the Prometheus scandal.
In 1964 the US Forest Service issued a permit to a graduate student from North Carolina allowing him to legally cut down an old Bristlecone pine known as Prometheus. It was growing on the slopes of Wheeler Peak in northeastern Nevada. After it was cut down, it was determined that Prometheus was almost 5200 years old (according to a retired UC Berkeley forestry professor who had aged the tree at the time). That means the forest service had issued a permit to cut down the oldest living thing on earth.
The forest service tried to cover it up, but word leaked out and public outrage led to several decisions in an attempt to protect the remaining trees. One of them was not to identify any of the ancient trees in either the White Mountains of California or the Snake Range in Nevada. It also eventually led to the creation of The Great Basin National Park.

3,000 BC was before the Pyramids of ancient Egypt.
They wouldn't be carbon dating the trees as that typical works only after the organic matter has been dead a substantial amount of time. They would be counting the rings in the Plug
