This video is so ironic, I followed you tutorial to do this for the DMG and was able to do it 3 times. I found another for the GBP and ended up breaking it too. I'm just glad to know I wasn't the only person to screw up the screen attempting this.
I’m glad I’m also not the only one😅
I broke the screen just touching the cable. They're the most fragile screens. You can't even find used ones that well.
If Jake can't make it first try, ain't no way I am even trying this out lol
If the pocket screens weren’t so fragile man🙃
Okay video has been watched, now i'll go shared your pain on the Jake64 channel :D
Btw, happy that you shared your failures too, made me learn and anticipate for futur projects, so thanks Jake!
I was able to backlight my gbp on the first attempt with thanks to this video (and some others). Appreciate it.
Question. Is there a way to fix just the ghosting on the original screen? No need for a backlight. I just wonder if we have better dot matrix screens nowadays. Because, honestly, as someone who got a DMG back in 1989, my main problem was mostly the ghosting.
I don’t think so. IPS will fix it though!😳
@@JakeSimmons oh, I know. I just dislike how quickly I go through my batteries with an IPA screen. The Duracell bunny is a liar.
this helped
A LOT
Cheap but cost few hundred in breaking screens ,I tried twice and gave up on the back light mod
wanna try to fit a gba/sp into a dmg shell?
I did a very janky version of that a long time ago
I did a gameboy frontlight mod on my pocket and reshelled it. Didn't want to separate the screen. Might make a video on an overview of it but it was about the same price$10 or so and has a little toggle switch to turn it on and off since I like to play my pocket outside on my deck. Doesn't seem to be a big drain but maybe isn't bright enough for some. I have seen other youtubers use loca to glue it but end up gluing it on backwards and getting a really dark fuzzy image and blaming the kit. But it is a directional piece of plastic. The light should bounce towards the screen not towards your eyes.. look into it if you haven't tried. Don't have to mod the screen at all so you won't make another pile trying.
Any tutorial for this? I would like to do this to mine and keep the OG screen in there
I tried this once (and only once), This video gave me PTSD lol.
Thank goodness I looked at this video first!
Yes! I want to see an e-ink screen mod. Just think of the battery life. 😮
I think that would be a funny April fool’s video
I don't enjoy the prospect of cutting into LCDs. I will stick to the modern screen mods. 😂
I guess I've been lucky. I'm 3/3 with this mod, and you are infinitely more skilled at this than i am.
If you’re 3/3 then you are way better than me😂
Got this mod years ago thinking this was the pinnacle of gameboys, then all the ips and tft mods came out a week later, it’s still sitting in my todo bin…
RIP
You should do a delve into 3D printed shells. It'd be cool to see the process of you designing your own shell and ordering it from pcbway or something. There's lots of consoles that are in pretty rough shape these days but the aftermarket shell choices are AWFUL to the point I'd almost prefer to play with tinfoil and tape.
The aftermarket shells are actually very high quality nowadays! Funnyplaying and Cloud Game Store make some of the best! There are definitely bad shells still floating around though
@@JakeSimmons Oh for GBA, GBC, DS Lite for sure. I'm just salty that I recently got an OG fat NDS with a broken hinge and the aliexpress shell I got was reallllllly bad. I also have a 3DS with a crack on the shell on the inside, which isn't a huge problem now but in like 20 years when more of these handheld are even older it'll be sad to not have any real options other than hoping some company makes a decent shell, or gutting another one.
I can't remember their name right now but some other RUclipsr did a video recently on a Sega GameGear (I think) a community member designed and they had printed in a resin shell and it came out pretty cool. Knowing stuff like that is possible at all is awesome, there's just so little information out there on how to get started.
thx
I won’t be getting good or trying this.
Gameboy lights also get screen rot that's what stopped me from buying one.
Yeah one of mine has it on the edges :/
@@JakeSimmons There's really nothing you can do to restore it other than get a new screen correct 🤔 Also your content is well done😎👍
@@NeoGeo822 yeah you can’t do anything about it that I’ve heard of :/
