I wanted to give you all a little update on the Charlie Tan case: I am now in contact with Charlie through the inmate messaging system and he was very thankful for the coverage on his case and all the supportive comments coming through. He is doing some amazing things already in incarceration and has some big goals to impact victims of domestic violence in the future. We are brainstorming ways we can work together. He is the sweetest guy and I am just so heartbroken by his situation. Hopefully we can work together in the future and try to make an impact. Thank you everyone for all the kind words and support, I have messaged him several of your comments and i'm sure it means a lot to know people are thinking of him on the outside...

If there’s any support we can give him, anyone we can contact to get an appeal, please let us know. (I don’t live in America so don’t know the process).
20 years is absolutely ridiculous. I would understand a lighter sentence, but this is crazy. There should be something similar to battered wife syndrome but for the children who witness their horrific parents growing up

Agreed. They used the weapons charges' punishment as a stand in for murder punishment which is super unethical imo. Sure, make him serve time for the weapons charges but it was his first offense and there were mitigating circumstances. He cooperated and plead guilty, why did they throw the book at him?
Idk if he was just trying to do the right thing (by pleading guilty) and didn't actually get a plea deal, but if he had a lawyer during this time they should be fiiiiiiiired and disbarred. Still, it's incredibly bad form by the judges and DA. I'd accept somewhere between 5-10 years but closer to 5 or less if served concurrently. And then never being allowed to own weapons again and probation for however many years. This 20 year sentence is just a waste of taxpayer money

That's why I feel like after a certain number of DV calls it shouldn't be even an option for the two individuals to live together anymore. Like: "Oh you hit strike 5 of the DV calls? Guess you two have to find different housing! Nope, don't care if you don't want to press charges! We might not charge one of you for assault, but now neither of your are legally allowed to occupy the same space. I see you have children, well I guess if you want dual custody you'll have to do a kid swap at the local courthouse as the two of you are too dangerous to be anywhere near each other." On an additional note, I think if you have more than one spouse/partner that reports you for domestic abuse, you get to go to jail. At that point, you've proven you're a danger to others.

My comment may not be popular but i don’t think it was the police fault. It’s the laws that protect abusers that are at fault.
If she called 18 times but then defends him 18 times when the cops come, what do the police have against him? What can the police legally do?
we did get the specifics of one incidence & the mom defended him, coerced of course, but defended him nonetheless which is extremely common in DA. The police may have had their hands tied depending on the laws in their jurisdiction and what evidence they could get.

A guy that was like an older brother to me, and my brothers best friend growing up grew up with an abusive father. He always told us he was worried for the safety of his siblings but especially for his mother. His father always told his mother that if she did anything against his will or wanted to leave him, he’d kill her. One day, she was trying to leave before he got home and he saw the packed bags and he stabbed her to death. I absolutely think Charlie did the right thing, when someone says they are going to kill someone, 9 times out of 10 it’s only a matter of time before they do and there’s really nothing else that you can do to stop the abuse. You can’t leave, you can’t rely on law enforcement, you can’t do anything.

Charlie probably grew up watching the police disregard his mothers safety over and over again and finally took it in his own hands. I really feel like he had no choice in the situation. Going to the authorities wouldn't have solved this. The dad would get a slap on the wrist, and then come looking for them even more angry and violent than before.
I don't even see how this is controversial. It's a controversy between those who have a moral compass, and those who don't.
