- This is Part 1 of a epic road trip exploring the amazing landscapes and night skies of the Gascoyne region of Western Australia with photography buddy Virat Shah.
We covered some 4000km over 8 days and managed 7 consecutive nights of shooting nightscapes in what must surely be some of the darkest skies on the planet.
This episode covers the first night of the trip, driving from Perth to Carnarvon, then scouting and shooting Quobba Lighthouse and the Carnarvon Space Museum.
A big thankyou to the Carnarvon Space Museum for their friendly cooperation with allowing us after hours access and for switching off the dish lighting.

Amazing video from the Epic 1st day in Carnavron and loving the shots out of the 10mm lens.. The Star Trails at the Dish is so good!
Cannot wait to see the Part 2,3 and Part 4! Keep them coming..
Thanks mate, what a trip it was hey - and so glad we'll have these memories. The Laowa 10mm did a very commendable job 👌
You guys are doing a GREAT job!
Thanks and safe travels.
Thanks so much for watching Jose 🙌
Fantastic video Greg, magnificent photos and timelapses, great trip, congratulations Greg and Virat Shah.
Cheers Mario, we had a super productive trip, was so much fun.
Amazing shots... Definitely Australia has the perfect setting for Nightscapes. Great video. Please keep it up!
@@zayitloud Thanks for watching, working on part 2 now
Looks like an awesome trip , cant wait for the next installments . Quality images also
Cheers Ben, work on the next instalment starts tomorrow 👍
What a superb video and location Greg. What a fantastic skies, they are a dream compare to my area in Italy. I look forward to see the other videos.
Thanks Massimo, the skies get even better in the next videos as we push inland into some truly remote locations.
Hi Greg, Looks like the beginning of an epic nightscaping journey around central WA. So far so good, I liked the dish and the lighthouse, both great subjects for a nightscape. I'm keen to see the next 3 videos of the trek. 👍😁😎
Thanks for watching Geoff, these foregrounds are nearly up there with dead trees 🤣. The landscapes and skies just kept on getting better the more remote we got so can't wait to pull the rest of the videos together. I'm going to also drop a little teaser video for the trip soon to whet your appetite.
What a magnificent video! In the early 1980s, my first full-time job was as a trainee electronics technician at OTC. Carnarvon was one of the possible remote postings they teased us with when offering the job. Sadly, I never got sent there to work, so it's wonderful seeing that it's still standing today and maintained as a museum. It looks all the better under our magic Milky Way!
Wow Doug, that's amazing and glad you got to see it again. You may or may not not be aware that there is talk of the dish being recommissioned and used by a Canadian space company to track satellites
@@GrowPhotography That would be a shame, but I guess there’s not a bottomless pit of money to maintain an out-of-service facility. I’ll have to get my tail over there before it happens. Thanks again for another wonderful video, Greg.
Yeah wow - you guys did well to do the driving and then still shoot the night sky! Goodness. That's epic in itself. Looking forward to the next few videos where we get to see what else you get to experience. Such a great part of the world - it's on my one day list!! Thanks for taking us along. Love those images with the Milky Way stretching across the sky.
Thanks Denise, we weren't going to waste any opportunities 😊. Working on part 2 now and can't wait to get it out there
@@GrowPhotography good on you!
Fantastic video. ❤ Love the format of it all and great to be sharing your adventures 😃👍
Cheers Jaune, even though its a bit more work capturing video as well as images I do really enjoy the additional layer of creativity it brings 👍
@@GrowPhotography Yes, creating the extra footage to produce the vlog does take a lot of effort. Not as simple as it looks! But, it's worth it.
Absolutely fantastic images too 😃👍
Wow, what a start of probably an epic adventure! I really liked the space museum but I was totally in love with that lighthouse! Especially the short milky way timelapse blew me away. Well done guys, keep it up!
Thanks Jeroen, hope you are doing well. Just watched your video at La Palma, the results you guys achieved are stunning 🙌. What an amazing passion we have.
@@GrowPhotography we definately do! Getting better here, slowly but steadily.
Great video, looking forward to seeing the rest. Always wanted to visit the Carnarvon Space Museum, will definitely have to make the trek. Love your work.
Thanks so much for the kind words Fiona, much appreciated. This was my second visit to the space museum. We were a bit short on time this visit unfortunately but I highly recommend it 👍
Love this guys
I wanna go and pack up the car right now!😂😂
Awesome images and look forward to the next installment
Cheers Simon
Me too, reliving it with every photo I edit 🤣
Man, that is one Goliath day! That is an interesting coincidence too as I'll be heading to Carnavan in September. The space museum is No.1 on my list when there. Images were fantastic guys, especially loved the full arch over the dish. How awesome are they to allow you on-site and with the flood lights off!
That's is a coincidence Domenic, and that road trip will make ours look insignificant 🤣. Are you just going to Carnarvon or touring around a bit?
What an adventure!! Fantastic video, Greg, and you’ve been absolutely spoiled with those foregrounds 🤩! I think you know that I love a good radio dish! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Interestingly we’ve been watching an over landing channel called Next Meridien Expedition - they’ve recently been around Shark Bay and the Useless Cove, which is think is near there. I’m learning about WA all the time!
Cheers Paul, you were definitely in my thoughts as I was shooting the dish 😋. Yes, Shark Bay and Useless Loop are just around the corner from Carnarvon - do I sense a trip to WA being considered 🤔
Great work Greg, all amazing shots by both yourself and Virat.
Disappointed I didn't end up joining you guys, would have been a great adventure....and yes, I know you invited me but I just forgot all about it! 😊
Thanks Trevor, you would definitely have revelled in all the astro possibilities over the 7 nights.
Sensational images Greg & Virat. You boys are killing it over in WA ... !!! What a marvelous location to shoot. Looks like the Laowa 10mm is working to perfection. Did you use it on the full frame Z camera Greg ..?? Looks like Virat is getting right into it with the Z8 as well. Great work both of you.
Thanks Richard - yes, I used it on both the z30 and Z6 with great results. There is definitely some astigmatism in the corners but it's not terrible. Lots of fun for general landscapes too. I'll probably do a review of sorts once I've used it a little more.
I'll let @viratshah respond re the Z8 - he's still learning the nuances for long exposures
Glad I saw this. I am flying from NE NSW to Perth next weekend. Then traveling with my brother to the Pilbara while he does his work in IT for Aboriginal Communities. We finish up near the Canning Stock Route and then head East to Alice Springs, then into QLD via the Simpson and back to NE NSW, 3 weeks. Then he will head back to Perth. 2 brothers and a Ute. Cameras and Seestar are packed. Unfortunately no Startracker as it is just that too heavy. Looking forward to dark skies and clear nights. Living the Dream.
You will indeed have a ball, the skies don't get any more pristine than out in this region. I'll be heading back for the Pilbara and Kimberley regions in the future for sure 🙌
I am jealous, how do you guys get so much time away!! I only work part time but that combined with family and farm animals make it difficult to get more than one night away! :(. However, those pictures are wonderful and I really enjoy the way you share the pictures - very different way of processing the images is also interesting. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Peter, making time is definitely a challenge and this trip required some negotiating. Virat and I both have different approaches and are at different stages. For me, the kids are young adults and close to independent, only animals are a few koi and a white fluffy pupper and my wife loves the opportunity to spend more time creating in her studio when I'm out shooting the night skies (check out @bower_bird_designs on Instagram 😊).
