    Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT)
What is Electro Convulsive Therapy or ECT and can I be forced to accept it when I’m detained under the Mental Health Act? My name’s Sasha and I’m a Solicitor in the Mental Health Department here at GN Law and this is the second video I’m doing in a series about consent to treatment.
So, ECT is a form of treatment for severe depression, catatonic, or mania which involves running an electric current through the brain. ECT is a form of treatment that is afforded special safeguards under the Mental Health Act, so while the general position is that you don’t have to consent to treatment if ECT is something that’s being proposed, not only do you have to consent to the treatment, but your doctor also has to get a second opinion doctor to confirm that you understand what you are consenting to and that this treatment is appropriate for you. There are different provisions if you lack capacity or if you’re under 18, however, I won’t go into these in detail on this video.
So, if you want to know more about ECT or treatment under the Mental Health Act in general then please call me on 020 8492 2290 and don’t forget to keep an eye out for other videos in this series that will be uploaded soon and of course, please don’t forget to like and share this video.
If you need help or advice please call Sasha or one of the team on 020 8492 2290
