J, this is the song you play when your at home (alone), and you just busting every dance move made to man, and your feeling yourself, and can't nobody tell you, you ain't the sh**. 🤎🖤
I love all things George Clinton but every time I hear that opening it just makes me think of the track "Me, myself and I" that sampled this back in the late 80's- Des la Soul, I think.
@@MsMadAboutMusic I saw a Bootsy Collins interview where the interview asked him about Prince and he said he met him in 1976 at Funkfest. That's 2 whole years before his first album was released. I think at the time the only offer Prince had was from A&M but they wouldn't let him produce.
Disco started as a mixture of music from venues popular with African Americans, Hispanic and Latino Americans, Italian Americans, and gay men in Philadelphia and New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Disco can be seen as a reaction by the 1960s counterculture to both the dominance of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music at the time. Several dance styles were developed during the period of disco's popularity in the United States, including "the Bump" and "the Hustle". By the late 1970s, most major U.S. cities had thriving disco club scenes, and DJs would mix dance records at clubs such as Studio 54 in Manhattan, a venue popular among celebrities. Nightclub-goers often wore expensive, extravagant, and sexy fashions. There was also a thriving drug subculture in the disco scene, particularly for drugs that would enhance the experience of dancing to the loud music and the flashing lights, such as cocaine and Quaaludes, the latter being so common in disco subculture that they were nicknamed "disco biscuits". Disco clubs were also associated with promiscuity as a reflection of the sexual revolution of this era in popular history.." (Not Just) Knee Deep" is a funk song, with a running time of 15 minutes, 21 seconds, on Side 1 of Funkadelic's 1979 album Uncle Jam Wants You. An edited version of the song, appearing as Side A on the single release, reached number one on the Billboard Black Singles chart. The song was written by George Clinton (credited on some releases as "George Clinton, Jr."); the recording was arranged by Walter "Junie" Morrison and produced by Clinton under the alias "Dr. Funkenstein". The Funkadelic version is sung by Clinton and several other group members, including Philippé Wynne, who was a former lead singer of the rhythm and blues group, The Spinners, which he left two years earlier. The song is widely regarded as a funk classic, peaking at No. 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the US R&B charts in 1979. The lyrics tell of a "girl" who "was a freak of the week" and the man who was dancing with her. He was unimpressed by the Jerk, the Monkey, the Chicken, and the Moose, but was turned on by the Freak. Lead vocals: George Clinton, Garry Shider, Walter Morrison, Jessica Cleaves, Philippé Wynne Lead guitar: Michael Hampton, Walter "Junie" Morrison Keyboards: Walter "Junie" Morrison Drums: William "Bootsy" Collins Percussion: Larry Fratangelo Background vocals: Larry Heckstall, Sheila Horne, Ron Ford, Jeanette McGruder, Dawn Silva, Mike Payne, Greg Thomas, Ray Davis, Mallia Franklin, Lige Curry, James Wesley Jackson, Greg Boyer, Jerome Rogers, Linda Shider
This ain’t disco!! It’s Old school raw 1970’s house party FUNK!!!! “Atomic Dog” by George Clinton. “We want Bootsy” by Bootsy’s Rubber Band. “Flashlight” , “Chocolate City” by Parliament. “One Nation Under a Groove”, “Maggot Brain” by Funkadelic. “Don’t Stop Loving Me” by The Brides of Funkenstein”. All under the leadership of George Clinton.
I can't believe that you are reacting to Funkadelic. I have been requesting Maggot Brain forever, please check it out. It featres the late, great Eddie Hazel on guitar , playing one of the grooviest & funky guitar solos ever put on tape. You will do yourself and your fans a big favor !
Yes the Mothership Connection, Parliaments, same group members. Aqua Boogie, Flashlight, Give up the Funk, One Nation, P-Funk oh yeah George Clinton was the leader of the group and Bootsie Collins was in that group as I stated before, Hollywood Squares was one of his hit. It was sampled later by a rapper Knee Deep was also sample by De La Sol on the song Me, Myself and I.
"One Nation Under a Groove" or "Flashlight" next, please! I also wouldn't complain if you went for "P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)". Thanks! Peace from SF

Jay, you're the first reactor I heard go down the rabbit hole of funk. Thank you because every party danced to songs that were funk songs. We had disco and funk music at the same time. Watch these funk groups, they had a whole different vibe that you can't get from audio only reactions. 👍🏾👵🏿🤗🎶🎸💖.
Phillipe Wynn from the group The Spinners is the one who is singing "🎶I got ants in my pants and I need to dance, then he scats the remaining lyrics. The late great Phillipe Wynn RIP
React to one of their hits "Flashlight" by Parliament/Funkadelic. Both are the same group. Funkadelic is more funk. Parliament they said is more rock. Listen to the Audio version so that you can hear the song in full.
Yeah, same personnel in the two groups. But I would say Funkadelic is more rock, at least their early albums was psychedelic rock. Parliament is more funky, dance oriented with horns. But on later albums the two styles kind of merged. And (Not Just) Knee Deep is an example of that.
1979! When I was in middle school the next year the DJ's would sometimes play the four minute version of this song at dances. They also sometimes played Zapp & Roger "More Bounce To The Ounce" and Lakeside "Fantastic Voyage", but mostly they played Michael Jackson "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and Lipps, Inc. "Funkytown". But I suppose those songs are more pop than funk. 1979 was also the year Prince dropped his first hit -- "I Wanna Be Your Lover".
There are other great funk groups, but this is THE FUNK GROUP! About 1/3 of 90s hip hop, especially West coast hop hop like Dr Dre, Snoop, etc, sampled Parliament/Funkadelic in their biggest songs. They're a goldmine of dope songs. Bootsy Collins on bass, was on all those funky James Brown hits. A few other members also played with James Brown. George Clinton, singer, is an icon in hop hop / r&b to this day. He's been on tracks with Outkast, Dr Dre, Snoop. Do yourself a favor and listen to the 10 most popular songs from Parliament/Funkadelic, and you'll see the origin of what rap and r&b became in 80s and 90s. You'll hear numerous samples and almost identical melodies. They are kinda the bridge that connects old school soul and groove with a funky more cool thing happening in the cities as black culture changed.
Parliament and P-Funk. George Clinton AKA Dr. Funkenstein. Is your Funk Master. And if you listen to a lot of West Coast Rap, you’ll hear a butt load of the Parliament samples. Also this song came out circa 1979.

Welcome to the Mothership Jay. George Clinton had two bands. Funkadelic who explored the rock side of funk. Funkadelic's albums especially the early ones like Free Your Mind And Your Ass will Follow are very psychedelic. Eddie Hazel was an amazing guitarist. Check out Maggot Brain, one of the greatest guitar solos ever, George Clinton supposedly told Eddie Hazel to 'play like yo mama just died'. Also worth checking out is Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On, probably their most guitar oriented album, Eddie's on fire. George's other band Parliament were more funk based, and Mothership Connection is a great place to start. Along with James Brown Funkadelic and Parliament are sampled a lot in hip hop. Welcome to the rabbit hole, 'make my funk the P Funk, I wants to get funked up'.
Man I am enjoying your reactions! You seem sincere and I can tell you appreciate talent. I've noticed you seem to really appreciate powerful female vocals. Me too! Disco came out when I was in high school, but I was a rocker so I couldn't permit myself to enjoy any of it. Having said that, I always liked ABBA. But because I was a rocker I could absolutely fall for Heart. Ann Wilson had an amazing voice and Nancy plays an acoustic guitar like no one else, and she is always there to support her sister. The first time I saw heart was at the Texas Jam in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl, July 1978. Wow was it hot! The second time I saw Heart was in Dallas again in 2019. They are still rocking. My wife wasn't a fan until then. Her first comment screamed to me was "I can feel the music". We were wearing ear plugs, but we could still hear the music through our bones. Ann doesn't have the same range she had in her twenties, but she still has the power. They closed the show with "Barracuda". At any rate, the best videos I've found of Heart's stage performance are from "Night at Sky Church" back in 2011. Check out this one: Heart - Crazy On You (from Night At Sky Church) ruclips.net/video/Wc24rLjdIS4/видео.html
It's so funny you just posted a reaction to a "funk" song. I just heard *Fantastic Voyage by Lakeside* on Siriusxm and thought "I would love to see JayveeTV react to this song" !!
One of my all time favorite jams ever. Remember at a Lockin' battle this song came up as I was going out for the second round and just nailed it hard. Was an awesome victory. Every time I hear this tune, just can't sit still. Good vibes, proper Funk!
You HAVE to react to “Give up the funk (tear the roof off the sucka)”. It’s actually one of my youngest son’s favorite songs. (I have to play it every time we get in the car)😂
O M G old school there!!!!! I’m a grandma but at one time I was young and I loved all of this funk music lol. 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼. Parliament Flashlight was the first I heard it in Jr high
@JayveeTV I am a huge ABBA fan, and you sir in my opinion of all other reactors for some reason you give out the best reaction. I'm here in hopes to see MORE ABBA reactions. There is so many amazing ABBA songs but I'll give you 10 that you've never heard of! Songs Like: S.O.S. - Chiquitita - Does Your Mother Know - One Of US - Super Trouper - The Name Of The Game - Waterloo - Voulez Vous - Summer Night City - Money, Money, Money and many many more... ABBA is a Swedish Pop Group that became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music. "ABBA" is an acronym formed from the first letters of each group member's first name: Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid. And also ABBA are set reunite to go on a tour and release new music later this year AFTER ALMOST 40 YEARS!! 🥰
JV....that's Funkadelic! baby!!Putting the funk in your & yo ear & yo face! every note and every vocal smash is heartfelt!! pure uncut funk! when she dance 💃she set the world on fire yuh!!🔥 🔥 🔥 the raw intense feel me lyrical delivery from PFunk band, singers George, the late greats Glenn Goins & Garry Shider etc.. on various Pfunk recordings were mind blowing, out of this world, take u to church & testify, I digress.😎🤘👍✌
This came out in 1979, right at the end of the disco era, which in the US lasted from 1973/74 to 1979. There was lots of funk-disco stuff at the time so this was part of the vibe and fit right in with the other music coming out back then.
Oh, you hit a sweet spot with this one. I wish I could hit the like button x 1000! Absolutely love George Clinton. He's legendary. I saw him play in Garberville, CA at the Mattole Community Center back in 2007 or 2008. Unbelievable experience. Flashlight should be the next reaction. That video the best when he comes out of the mothership with his long hair and cane. How was it possible for someone to be so cool.
My favorite Funkadelic song!❤! Funkadelic, the masters of funk!! You must hear the extended version, you will love the instrumental section. We use to dance so hard to this song, the music keeps you moving!! George Clinton💗 a true pioneer of the Funk era!!
Oh you've come across a well of DEEP innovation and influence on music and popular culture with this. First thing to know is Funkadelic and Parliament are basically the same group; one tilted more toward rock and the other R&B. George Clinton is the mastermind behind it but there were several great artists that were part of it. Keyboardist Bernie Worrell changed the sound of music with his synth bass in the song "Flashlight," by Parliament. George always had clever turns of phrases, such as "Free your mind and your ass will follow. And Bootsy Collins and his Space Bass and star glasses is something else. The music itself was call P-Funk, which stood for Pure and Uncut Funk, "otherwise known as The Bomb." George's smash hit "Atomic Dog" has been echoed time and again in Hip Hop and P-Funk itself was a major source of inspiration for Gangster Rap, especially Dr. Dre. Other popular songs would include "One Nation Under A Groove," "Give Up The Funk" and "Bop Gun" but some other great tracks include "Funkentelechy," " Cosmic Slop" "Maggot Brain," "Dr. Funkenstein (live)" and "All Your Goodies Are Gone," which features a compelling vocal performance by George. Oh, and can't leave out the landing of the Mothership (now in the Smithsonian) from their P-Funk Earth Tour. Enjoy the trip!
“Give Up The Funk-Tare The Roof Off The Mutha” Parliament…👌🏼 Played this album non-stop in the late 70’s. There’s just nothing else like it. One of a kind. I’m so thrilled to have been raised with the best music. Funk music was my fav….still is. You can’t help but dance.
You just got funktafied it came out in 75 or 76. After all these decades I fondly got to see them in person on my 60th birthday. George Clinton announced he was retiring.
I've said it before. I find that about one out of every 25 of these reaction videos (about 4%) involve a song I haven't heard before either. This was one of those. Always a treat, because I find that my reaction matches JV's pretty closely. It's great, experiencing a song for the first time along with him. :)
Most people know this sample from De La Soul's "Me, Myself & I". Funkadelic and Parliament have been sampled so many times, anything by them is worth checking out!

JAY... A bunch of people sampled this song in hip hop.... React to De La Soul.. song: me myself and i
Man I am enjoying your reactions!
Check out this one:

I got to see them around 95-96 in Dallas. Great concert. Love really good funk.
One Nation under groove. Funkadelics
You HAVE to react to “Give up the funk (tear the roof off the sucka)”. It’s actually one of my youngest son’s favorite songs. (I have to play it every time we get in the car)😂
The late Phillppé Wynn of the Spinners is also singing some of the leads on this.
I remember when it first came out it still has not lost the excitement of his songs
I wonder what the beginning of your intro it says “get the bk”
O M G old school there!!!!! I’m a grandma but at one time I was young and I loved all of this funk music lol. 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼. Parliament Flashlight was the first I heard it in Jr high
Another interesting fact the female singer was Jessica Cleaves who was the original lead singer of Earth Wind and Fire
I thought there was a woman singer in ewandf I saw it years ago
The power of the one. Junie Morrison, the Operatic voices, dirty bottom, Michael Hampton guitar solo, Phillipe Wynn, a funk Opera!!

Simply the best. THAT ladies and gentlemen IS the funk!
Life is better with Funkadelic really cool seeing you enjoy it stay funky dude
This came out in 1979, right at the end of the disco era, which in the US lasted from 1973/74 to 1979. There was lots of funk-disco stuff at the time so this was part of the vibe and fit right in with the other music coming out back then.
Yesssssss -- one of my all time favorite bands.
Please do more from the Parliament/Funkadelic family! Check out the tales of Sir Nose D Voidoffunk, Flashlight, Mothership Connection….
“Give Up The Funk-Tare The Roof Off The Mutha” Parliament…👌🏼
Played this album non-stop in the late 70’s. There’s just nothing else like it. One of a kind. I’m so thrilled to have been raised with the best music. Funk music was my fav….still is. You can’t help but dance.
It didn't hurt listening to this song and seeing this hot young man 🎉🎉🎉
Greatest song of all time to me.. So many samples have come just from this song it’s incredible.. Dr Dre used tf outta this song every part
Yes, these Funk Masters are at the top of the Food Chain -- often imitated but NEVER duplicated. Parliamnent/Funkadelic are the template 💪💪💪
You just got funktafied it came out in 75 or 76. After all these decades I fondly got to see them in person on my 60th birthday. George Clinton announced he was retiring.
That's my JAM!!
Can appreciate the fact that you really listen and try to understand songs you've never heard before. Kudo's bro 💪💪
