I love Parliament Funkadelic, my first concert experience in 1977.
The best concert that I have ever attended in my life. The Mothership Connection(Spaceship) had landed on Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, OH to a sold out arena. Weed smoke was flowing throughout the building and I had a serious contact at 14 years old. The concerts back in the 70's lasted 3 or 4 hours. They jammed from start to finish. Parliament/Funkadelic is the greatest Funk band/group on planet Earth!!!!

Tank you for giving us the P Funk : grew up listening the music, didn't understood a single word as a French child, but I knew right away I was witnessing greatness in action just by listening to the pure music.
As a black man who grew up with all aspects of P-Funk, I can tell that you get it . Funk on Michael Palmisano !
As a white kid who grew up in the 70's, blues rock, metal, psychedelic dominated what I listened to. Decades later I heard Eddie Hazel for the first time and dove in to the Funkadelic/Parliment world. Will go to my grave regretting that it took me 40 years to "discover" this sound.

Music is for the soul. I grew up when this was created and then release into the world. Let me drop a little bet you didn't know this. Phillipe Wynn from the Spinners who used to sing lead on the song "Sadie" also sung on George Clinton's Parliament. George Clinton is a legend and Icon his career goes all the way back to the 50's. When you can create a sounds and create a Genre you're a legend.

I happened upon this video while bored RUclips surfing 😂 Great chord analysis. I approached that song as though it were in D minor with associated extras. You're right about the vocals doing the heavy lifting. That was David Spradley (writer of Atomic Dog) on piano and Amp Fiddler on strap on keyboard 😂 Inside tip ... that was a one off gig that we came together to play after not playing together for a year or so. Keep it going Bro

My first introduction was probably 1976. I was 11 and already sneaking into my older brothers records when he was at work but one day I saw a strange looking album. The label stood out: Casablanca and I think it said Chocolate City. It had been severely mistreated, scratched up but that album label just had me. Something in my mind was in awe as only the Motown label had that effect with its artist and if it had that distinct Detroit map/ music it was straight. Well the album was Mothership Connection and there was no way it would play. Something intuitively said play it til it won't play. So I played it and the 1st thing I heard was :

Obviously I was hooked and pop music wouldn't do shit for me until the mid 80s and going off to college
I learned this entire solo from the album version by ear a few years ago. I always wondered where some of those notes came from. I had it narrowed down to a modulation between D minor and A Dorian. Cool to see the chords underneath. I never knew what chords were being played. The reason Eddie isn’t playing the solo is primarily because Michael Hampton is the one who played the solo on the album. That, and he pretty much replaced Eddie when he went to jail. Hell, you’ll even see him playing Maggot Brain instead of Eddie WITH Eddie being on stage. Which I never really understood. But Mike is a MONSTER of a guitar player and has some really, really insane live performances during the period which Eddie was gone. He joined the band at 17 years old. CRAZY. That’s prodigious.
First time I saw "Motor Booty Affair" footage too I tripped off that! Mike playing "Maggot Brain" with Eddie on stage. One of my P Funk friends told me though, "Mike knew Maggot Brain so well that's what got him the gig."
@@DiscoHank Yeah, rumor has it that he played the solo note for note and George and the rest of the crew were pretty blown away! There’s a few live versions where Mike ripsss it too. Like Houston 1978. I mean it’s about as good as a guitar can be played if you ask me. I’m a HUGE fan of both Mike and Eddie.

@@geralddecosta320 I have looked through so many live videos of p-funk and found so many hidden gems. The 85 Rockplast video (the one that this performance came from in the video) is among the best I have seen in its entirety. Those videos from like 76 to 79 are absolutely ridiculous when Mike has the Super Strat and the Alembic! They say that Stratocaster he plays is the first ever super strat! It predates Van Halen’s Frankenstrat (which a lot of people thought was the OG). But Mike had 3 humbuckers in that Stratocaster in 1976. And the fact that it was a lefty (Tip of the hat to Hendrix) makes it that much better. The way the strings are strung up makes the low E the longest string. Which I think gives the guitar a totally different sound. I wonder where that guitar is now? A piece of history
The keyboard player is David Spradley. The bass player is Skeet Curtis, the touring bassist for over thirty years.

He’s probably talkin about this recording which is actually from ‘77, but there’s a few others from 76 on youtube but they don’t have long guitar solos so idk.
ALSO I strongly advocate that you take a look into Eddie Hazel’s deeper cuts for a new potential video. Like you could look up Funkadelic live 1969 which will bring to you 14 minutes of incredible footage of the original Funkadelic lineup playing live (I think it’s the only live footage of that era of PFunk available to us). The funky guitar grooves in that video are AWESOME, it would be so cool if you could break them down. It also features the band seamlessly transitioning in between several of their early songs in a medley-esque way...very tight.
Have you heard The Goose by Parliament? If not, you should. So much is talked about Eddie’s blistering loud Maggot Brainy solo work but no one ever talks about or analyzes his incredible rhythm guitar ability, like that which he lays down on The Goose, along with a beautifully funky, subtle and laid back quiet solo towards the end of the jam. PUHLEASE man look at The Goose!

I've watched so many of your videos but this is my all time favorite. I listen to everything from Slayer to Duke Ellington but for some reason the older I get the more and more I find myself listening to P funk. Nothing puts me in a better mood than the raw minimal rules of real funk. It's so amazing to see someone else nerd out on funk as much as I have in my older age. 🤘🏽 P funk for life!

I like to thank you man for posting your awesomeness video on the tight rhythmic sound of PFunk!! I am 67 years young and I still jam to George Clinton and the PFunk Allstars from 72 and still today. I have seen this video you used to explain the the bands technics in developing the PFunk sound. The music is and was before it’s time such and like the band Sly and the Family Stone!! George is a great band leader and yes he commands what he wants to hear and gives the band to leeway to build on the musics notes that makes the crowds get up out of their seats to move and groove man!! The Parliament Funkadelic band of today is awesome as well with Black Byrd McKnight in lead guitar demonstrating his dynamic skills on the fretboards... with an awesome drummer Benzel Baltimore on drums to keep the beat in time for the band and the natives on the floor!!! Again I enjoyed your video I have subscribed and will keep tuning into you a whole lot more!! I’m not a guitar player but I do have a few guitars that play around with ....hopefully one day I will learn to play some PFunk tunes man!!! Bruh! So, my first album I ever bought was Uncle Jam Wants You by Funkadelic in '79, so I am partial to the P-Funk. But, your analysis emphasizes what I heard years ago. in an interview with Bootsy Collins, he compares backing James Brown like being in the military and going to George Clinton like the opposite. Free form and feel. Your analysis just reinforces that. Super cool!
Funny thing about that. If the story is more truth than rumor...it was James Brown who indirectly kicked off Parliament/Funkadelic further evolution. James Brown's music formula always relied on the One. When Bootsy left the JBs he took that with him and passed it on to George Clinton ...it was like an epiphany for George Clinton and everything was on The One from then on.

Man thanks for video. The very first concert I ever attended was a Funkadelic concert in Houston TX. A friend of mines snuck me in because I was only 17 years old. I can still remember the Mothership coming down and being high as a kite because of the second hand smoke. I had never seen that many T and A's in one place. I was pimple faced kid who for one night had gone to P-Funk heaven.

Great to see a fan who is also a musician react. Dennis killed it. They were super tight. This also shows Gary as the leader and M D. When they were this tight not many bands could touch them. Great video. I think it was Razor on keys maybe boogie on bass. So many great musicians came through this camp.
I’ve been telling people for years that Parliament/Funkadelic was the greatest band ever, just because of all the hidden gems within their songs. I’ve seen them 30 times easily over the years and was never disappointed. I even played with Eddie Hazel in “Funkadelic 2nd Generation before he passed in 1992 and I’ve jammed with Mike Kidd Funkadelic Hampton a couple of times.

Great vid and explanation of what’s going on. Other than Prince not sure of any band as good. I worked stage local on a Smokin Grooves show. Standing off stage I was amazed. First, George seemed like he could barely stand (and yes late to come out). But was amazed at the cues he gave to the band. How much control he had over everything that was happening. Things most would miss or no even know (like you pointed out he needed the mic hotter). Live...they are one of the greatest experiences ever.

That HOB show in Myrtle Beach that you are talking about was back in 2007 and I was there. I was standing on stage most of the show next to Danny Bedrozen. Before the show me and my brother were hanging out in my 18 wheeler in the hotel parking lot...playing guitar with the late Garry Shider and Boogie Mosson and of course, my good friend, Kidd Funkadelic...Michael Hampton.

Hey old school. So a background singer helped me sneek in to a showw at the fox in Detroit. Saw the whole show from the rafters on stage when they played flashlight I climbed down and danced on stage with my heros

dude I don't know what the music scene was like in Ctown when you lived there, but the music scene there these days is insane! all the guitarists are insane and amazing jam band guys, I played in a couple gigging bands in Charleston when I lived there back in 2010 and considered myself lucky to be playing among such great guitarists.
