The dresser was built by my dad! He went all out for it and it fits the space so perfectly and I couldn't find anything like it on the market, ever. I can't put into words how grateful I am that he built that for us.
I just started setting up my shop late last year (Rocky Mountain Woodworks), and I had only made 2 cutting boards and a charcuterie tray before I got it into my head that I needed to go ahead and build my router cabinet. No graduation from projects of increasing skill and technique...just me doing what I usually do where I jump into the deep end of the pool with an anchor, and somehow manage to still tread water. lol Aside from that, I had it in my head that I had a NEED to go ahead and get the "big boys" in my garage ot get ready to work...so with no business going at all, I already have the big Dewalt 735x planer, a Delta 36-725t2 table saw, and am about to get a Wahuda 8" planer. Thankfully, all of these big boys are gifts to me from my father as this is really the first interest I have had in my life that he has supported me in, and he wants to help as much as he can now that he is getting much older (he just turned 86).
Definitely take the woodturning class at Wood Craft! I'm 65, a recently retired teacher, and have essential tremor. I too really wanted to turn. Took their beginner woodturning class and loved it! Then took their bowl turning class. I deal with fatigue, so I had to work in shorter bursts than most, but where there's a will there's a way. And I loved it! Then took their segmented bowl turning class - that one made me nervous. But I think that was because of my fatigue. I pushed myself a bit more than I should have and didn't feel confident so I think I need to turn a few regular bowls and try it again. Bought a big ol' used lathe that I now need to give a good cleaning - then I'll be off and running. I've toyed with the idea of turning my woodworking journey into a RUclips channel encouraging those with different illnesses or just getting old, to go after whatever is they want to do. You two are VERY encouraging.
Thanks for all you do! Always remember the 1st time building something takes the longest 😱 I sent you pictures of a crib I built , took forever but worth it
Careful on the lathe with your ponytail! There was a grad student that died a Columbia university a while back when her hair got caught in a metal lathe.
@731Woodworks That was so nice of Amy to commend you, Matt for your perseverance. It's also really nice that she has been such a great encouragement to/ for you over the years.
#3 Lack of confidence is something I have to remind my wife of a lot of times. She started a business as a wedding planner/coordinator a little over a year ago and she'll still get major butterflies the nights leading up to an event. I have to remind her of how awesome she is at her job and how much work she's put into an event before now. It still amazes me how little confidence this beautiful woman sometimes has in her work. I feel the same way with my own work. You feel like you have impostor syndrome sometimes.
Looking forward to you coming down to Texas, I visit there as much as I can since all of my wife’s family is in the Ft Worth area. Going there tomorrow even 😁
Love this episode! Just getting started with my own woodworking business, your advice is both timely and reassuring! Come on down to Texas! Just get ready for the humidity.
Good stuff guys. In addition to starting right off with an accountant, I'd also add a lawyer. Pricing: Anytime you start a business, for the first 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, everything is priced at 'Special Introductory Pricing' for each new customer. Specify that right up front. As you gain experience at making and being a business person finding out what you should be pricing, you can start charging the regular rate that makes you money, but also creates sales.
I moved from Birmingham, AL to the gulf coast. I put my shop in a PODS pod. I coated the cast iron in some preservation goop. Packed it all in and tied it down so it wouldn’t crash around. When the new house got built, I had it delivered and unloaded it into the garage. It worked like a charm. They get you somehow: states with no income tax get you on property tax. You can’t get away.
Your wife is your strength, . You will be her strength , . Without each other your marriage will be strong but you won’t be happy . You two need each other to be successful. ,happiness will follow . Thanks for videos ,you help more than you ever know
The first thing to do before getting an accountant, is register your business name with the city and open a business bank account. At the same time, get a credit card dedicated for business, even if it’s not technically a business credit card. Make all your purchases through the business credit card and it will just about to your accounting for you at the beginning. Pay it off as soon as the statement drops!
I have inlaws in Grand Prairie (transplants from Illinois) and before that they lived in Arlington for a little while. It's amazing how the DFW burbs has exploded with development over the past 10-15 years. Even the housing prices there have went up quite a bit. Although still cheaper than other areas of the country.
DUDE!! I'm from Arlington! My family moved here from Colorado when I was 10, and I STILL to this day remember when Highway 360 ended at Arkansas where the old Forum 303 mall was! lol
@@technewsfortechnoobs When my wife and I first visited Arlington in 2008 we were pregnant with my son (our oldest now). 360 at that time ended around I-20. They lived in Southwind Subdivision just south of I-20. I remember asking my sister-in-law why did the north/south road in that area have a weird split in it (one way, divided up, north and south lanes about 200 feet apart). She said they were planning to put in a new Interstate Toll road in the large grassy median. Just a few years later when we visited again--BOOM--here's this new toll way! Also, their subdivision, about 2/3rd finished initially, was now completely full of new houses. Even more amazing was that house they bought in the early 2000s for around 200k was worth over 300k when they moved. They had only lived there about 10 years before they sold it! You hear stories of how things progress but to see it happen rapidly is very interesting.

We have our wood lathe set up outside under a lean-too roof with the firewood. I'm in the process of building my own diode laser with a true 21inx21in working area... and I have no idea where I'm going to put it. I'm thinking some sort of murphy-bed mechanism so that I can raise it out of the way or a cart on wheels.

Yes I used Squarespace and built it myself using videos on YT on how to build one. Marketing Made Simple and Business Made Simple books by Donald Miller are great resources too.
I'm having a heck of a time selling projects I'm really only selling on Facebook market and it just seems like people want everything for free it's very frustrating I make decent stuff I've been doing it since high school and am really starting to go at it hard now I just make random things people who buy things off me seem to always be impressed with the product.
Howdy Mr. 731 and The Mrs... Lots of Great info 👍, I really enjoyed watching. Though I've broke my barrier/fear of posting stuff online, I only actually sold one item. But, that's OK. As you said, I'm being patient. TBH, after posting some of my Planters, I haven't even gone back into Marketplace to look. 😮 That probably raised your eyebrow a bit, ehh. To use my own terminology here, I'm letting it soak. It's been about 6 weeks now. It being my first posting, I wanted to just toss it out there and "see what happens". I didn't want to bog myself or my mind down with any Data, questions to myself on WHY it isn't selling, stuff like that. I just wanted to put it there and leave it alone. But now that it's been there awhile and I haven't touched it or manipulated it, I can go back into it and look at the data, how many people viewed it, how many put it in their basket etc etc. The purpose is, NOW I've created a "Control" value of doing "Nothing". Next step is to look over the data and to make decisions on how I can tweak this/that and see how that changes from my Control. My theory is that if I changed things, tweaking this/that from the get go, I wouldn't really know what worked and what didn't. In theory anyways. In other news/thoughts. I've got another "Tool" idea for you to try and maybe do a video on. A Mortising bit attachment for use on/with a Drill Press. I'm talking about the type of Mortising bit which drills square holes. A Mortising machine which is dedicated to JUST that one purpose runs around $300+ and that's for a Wen. Well, there is a kit you can buy that attaches to your drill press and allows you to drill out mortises and those kits cost between $99 - $150 on Amazon. I'm building a Garden Bench for a friend and I'm doing it with mortise and tenon joinery. Stupid me thought I could just chuck up a mortis bit to my drill press and be done. NOPE. Don't work that way. Ya gotta have a kit. So, there's a tool I've never seen you do a review on. Could be a game changer for those of us who want to build with joinery but DONT want to chuck up a round bit into the router then turn around and hammer/chisel the ends square. Could ya do a tool review on that? Loved the video Mr. Buttons....Talk to ya later.

Then I'm a hero because I just saved them $1,300.
