How To Make Red Wine From Grapes in Just 2 Weeks

  • It’s easy to make your own wine at home and even better if you can make it from grapes you (or in my case a neighbour) have grown.
    Our recipe, although fast, makes a wine that is full of flavour and follows the principles of those used by commercial wine makers.

    You can use grapes you have grown, bought at the market, greengrocer or even the supermarket. You can even use grapes that you have frozen, just fully defrost them first.
    Remove all the stalks from the grapes as this can make the wine bitter. Do not use a juicer either as this rips any seeds inside and so you get the bitterness from them too. We want to crush the grapes and ferment them with the skins to extract lots of compounds that are in the flesh of the grapes.
    The method is slightly different for green grapes, but this video shows you how easy it is to make wine from red / black grapes.
    I didn’t have quite enough grapes to get to a full gallon, so I used some grape juice concentrate (www.brewbitz.c...) and water to bring it up to 4.5 litres. So if you have lots of grapes, you can skip this part.
    You will probably find that you will need to add some sugar to your juice, so you end up with a wine with an alcohol content you would normally expect. So in the video, I’ll show you how to calculate the amount of sugar you need to increase the alcohol to the desired level and when to add the sugar.
    I also use an old fashioned method to crush the grapes. Let me know if you give it a go too.
    Red wines can be quite acidic, and have lots of tannins that can make the wine feel dry in the mouth, so home made red wine is usually best if bottled and the left for 6-12 months or ideally 2-4 years.
    It’s really easy to make red wine at home from your own grapes and in the video I show you how easy it is. It takes about 14 days from crushing to bottling. 7-10 days for the fermentation, 2 days for the stabilisation and degassing and 3 more days to clear, then it’s ready to bottle.

    To make it more sanitary I saw an italian guy using rubber boots that he only used for grape mashing.

      True. But for small batches, and to get that amazing weird feeling of grapes popping under your toes, not to mention the weird massage feeling caused by the pips 😂😂😂

    Great to see you guys back. You inspired my first rhubarb wine 👍 I know the grapes came from the freezer but would you not normally add a campden right at the start, 24hrs before adding yeast, to kill any wild yeasts ? Also, did you do the whole ferment just in the bucket with a loose lid, no airlock ?

      Hi. If these had been fresh, you can still follow this exact recipe.
      Campden tabs dont actually kill the yeast, they just subdue the natural yeasts and allow the pitched yeast to take hold.
      The campden tablet also creates a layer of sulphur dioxide which is heavier than air so sits on top of the must and protects it from infection.
      And yes, this method is a quick method, so yes. All in a fermenting bucket and no airlock needed. Check out our video airlock or no airlock ruclips.net/video/8mJIaKC-7OA/видео.html. There are still traditional wineries and breweries that use open vessel fermentation. But if you want to use an airlock, use an airlock 🙂

    I tried making wine for the first time. I crushed washed And dried concord grapes with sugar and them put them in an air tight container for a week. when I opened them today they were all foamy and bubbly and had a strong wine scent. Is it safe to drink? Pls help.

      That was from a can of beer from a brewery in bristol “cosmic brewing co” but they only made 2 beers

    Do you find the Campden tablet has a taste have asked you before

      Ive never actually tasted a campden tablet and I dont recommend anyone to try it. However, I have added it to many wines over the years. I have not tasted the wine straight after adding a campden tablet. And I dont recommend doing that either.
      However, i have not noticed a taste.
      Wine does change over time.

    Anyone got any advice on where to buy wine grapes from online? (realise it's not the right time of year), i 'only' want enough for 6, 12 or 18 bottles, most places (understandably) want to sell by the ton 😢
