- Big moves in an 8 on Your Side Investigation. We first told you about a local non-profit that's missing 100 million dollars from trust accounts for some of the most vulnerable. The Center for Special Needs Trust Administration’s board of directors have resigned.
The Board resigned because they are complicit.
In a previous video they indicated that the board was new. They took over and then discovered the missing money. I guess they were overwhelmed and resigned.

White collar crime needs much harsher punishment.
And no cushy prison.

No, you can’t trust them. The temptation to steal will cause some people to fail. But there ARE safeguards that should have been in place to make embezzlement very hard - and those were not used. Maybe by incompetence or maybe by intent. Who can say?
My limit is 3 cents.
White collar crime-stats victims rarely recover any money likely means there are many enablers who also escape any criminal penalties.

LMAO. There is no such thing and that money is gone.
@@jasonpatterson2143 There absolutely is director's insurance. I am on a number of boards, and have it. It's a liability insurance for exactly this type of situation when you get sued as a director of an organization.
Most "nonprofits" pay their officers and directors hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly.
If they generate $100,000,000 like this charity does then paying an executive director $100,000 is a wise investment. Would you rather pay someone half the salary to generate $300/mth at local bake sales or someone who can drive significant donations and excels at networking to net huge benefactors to justify twice the pay? I go with the latter.
@@AJR-zg2pythe latter sounds like business nonsense.
No worries. Just like most NGOS, they MAKE SURE 1% of all donations go to the cause.

I think I’m going to be sick. News never makes me cry but these poor people and their special needs children and families have been through hell and now their settlements are completely GONE?! I just can’t imagine the depravity of the people in control of that money! How DARE they?!
Drama much?

They make pretty little excuses for themselves to avoid the pain of confronting their evil deeds. Unless they are narcissistic psychopaths; they have no conscience and don’t worry about right or wrong. More of them around than you think.
The absolute shade of her posting her number and email on tv. Love it.
Excellent reporting. I wish more news outlets had investigative reporters like this one.
This is unbelievable.
You gotta watch your own money, don’t even trust the banks
We cannot be divided by how much or how little people lost. When it's how you kept your loved one home with you it's everything.
Q. “Do you know where the money went?” A. “No”. BULLSHIT!
Trustees can't be trusted.
That’s not loans - that’s grand larceny
The criminals usually justify it by telling themselves that they’ll pay it all back and more - which never happens. But a hardened criminal won’t bother with the excuses, they just take it.
That scumbag needs to be arrested!
A friend of mine was injured as a child. A trust was set up by a local bank. The bank put the money in an account that did NOT even earn a low rate of interest for 12 years. Nothing.
Sounds like an escrow account. Why they would leave it there beats me. Somebody should have insisted on a better form of investment. At 7% your money will double in ten years, so this was a massive loss of capital. The bank benefited greatly out of having free money to use.
So did the bank go out of their way and make a trust, or did whoever represented your friend as a child screw up?Like a parent!
That’s the parents fault🤷🏿♂️
At least they didn't give it to these people.
i would think there is more than one thief, many probably knew, how could they not know?
They are just "pinning" it on them. Everyone had a finger in the pie.
Good point, otherwise the suspects would not still be in town running businesses, they'd be out of the country with the $100M.
They are GONE.
Brittany is my favorite reporter. Her stories are always concise and informative.
The money has “disappeared” the guy will probably get 10 years out in 2 and then spend the rest of his life with his family spending the $109 million
I'm not sure if they have a fiduciary duty but I suspect that the board is liable in a civil sense if under their watch as corporate officers they facilitated an unsecured loan to another corporate officer. I suspect they're not complicit in a criminal sense but likely failed in their duties. Hopefully a lawyer skilled in this area can weigh in further.
1:48 "...over an ELEVEN YEAR span".
No independent auditors??
I was wondering the same thing. How did they go 11 years and no one knew?
Take the money cut and run now where have I heard of that before. O yea Rick Scott.
The board should resign, because they all need to be in prison. They loaned themselves 100,000,000?😡😡😡🤬🤬
Mans inhumanity to man. Never ceases to amaze me 😢
And that’s the problem with the system, they don’t want to let the families manage the money and they send it to companies that steal the money anyway.
Show the faces of the people who did this! Let the public see their faces!!
Why aren’t the 2 founders in jail facing criminal charges for grand theft.
No independent annual audits? If not, why not? Was the board asleep or in on the take?
OMG....this is horrible. This was intentional and planned. Board members resigning isn't enough, they need to be held accountable but they won't be. Love this reporter listing her phone and email... on the phone and the 'call dropped.' ha ha. Britney is on this story!!!!
What.? This is insane how dare they do this to the family, justice needs to be served.
It is sad when the pubic trust is betrayed. What kind of sick person would take money from vulnerable people?
Horrible...hope and pray they they get their money back and the culprits are jailed
There's no way someone didn't know this money was Missing
THIS IS GONNA BE A GOOD ONE!!!!!
I can't even begin to think how devastating this is for families!!!!
Keep saying they should have brought in the Federal Bureau of Investigation from the beginning over two years ago instead of a law firm!!! At this point the IRS should be involved and investigate the companies that involved as well as the former chairman and his board to see who benefited from those transactions that totalled one hundred million dollars.
absolutely true, FBI should have been called in by the law firm at least
It’s 200 million 1 is gone the other is missing 😂

I'm so old, I remember Bob Hite and Gayle Sierens as WFLA anchors.
You can't hardly blame them all for resigning. The owners did this! They will likely go down for federal crimes.
There HAS to be more people who knew and know what’s happened to these peoples money. Shame!!
I think every non government company with “Administration” in their title should be investigated.
I was also wondering if many of these families were perhaps under the impression that the funds were being overseen by a government agency -- at least at first.
Anyone can start a none profit and take off. There was a lady in Florida that caused issues after Irma in fact I went over to them about four years after Irma out of curiosity when the lady told me I didn’t qualify for hurricane relief due to no ID which makes no sense as they ask for all of this before they did the paper work. I found out not only did they fire that worker that worker lied and told them that I was suppose to shoot them where they had to literally get to no me just to wipe the slate clean. I told them “if you had to fire someone for being a bad employee don’t you think it’s best to not even give them the time of day because they had this bad track record?”
Imma assume they got that story from my ex landlord that was also let go for her conduct as one lawyer down there said “the reason we no longer take tenant landlord cases is because even if you win they find a way to make you lose where they call everyone to deny an application as one of my client won and due to it being a small world she had to move to another county”
And also find it ironic as I had an attorney call a non profit only for them to go from that to claiming “we a business we can deny whoever we want” similar to the bad landlady case even spirit pulls that one where standard airline rules might as well be throw out the window for “this is my house we do what we want” when in reality they just bunking in a building that doesn’t really belong to them. Kinda like those section 8 people with the “it’s my house” bs when everyone knows that’s not their house
They need to locate and seize every asset these two men have, and upon completion of the criminal prosecution the court would order those assets liquidated and the funds returned to the Center.
The problem with a NFP run by a board is that the board members are protected from losing their personal wealth...homes, cars, jewelry, etc.... if the company had the right protection. I can't trust people who protect themselves from being sued personally for their wrong doings. It is a sad greedy evil that if I was a super hero or Queen Witch of the Universe, I would remove greed from humakind to make us better people. No consequences means people will do selfish things.
WTF 😮 are the feds and auditors going to fix this wtf
$200,000,000.00 ALL GONE‼️🤯🤯🤯💸💸💸👣👣👣👺
They need to make every person that worked there pay back every cent and then some
Follow the board and make sure they don’t leave the country.
*"Who's in Jail?"*
That's the Question that should be Asked! If that QUESTION cannot be Answered:
Authorities were in on the Scam 100%!
Can a trust be FDIC insured?
Our systems continue to prey on the most vulnerable and it’s sickening. We need government to better regulate. And help its people.
I think there does need to be more oversight for nonprofits. Seems like this happens a lot where people funnel obscene amounts of money through nonprofits into their own pockets.
Glad Channel 8 is publicizing this so the FBI can grab the embezzlers.
Of utmost importance charge and freeze all management even personal accounts.
How did this go unnoticed? Were they falsifying statements that should have gone out monthly, let alone annually?
Often, the people entrusted to oversee large sums of money, are wealthy individuals who don’t live within their means. No matter how much money they “acquire”,it’s not enough. Safeguards should have been in place that no monies could be removed from the trust without a legitimate third party’s permission and signature, so that there would be some accountability by someone. I hope that each and every board member is thoroughly investigated and brought to justice. How could these people be so low and slimy as to steal from the special needs community? Disgusting!
And the thieves are the usual suspects

If there isn't any O and E insurance, that board is screwed.
How could this happen? How are people even assigned to the board?
Reminds me of the "social workers" who jacked up elderly people who were fine, yet the "social workers" took control of their accounts and even got the local police involved (implicated) to chuck them out of their house under the guise of "caretaking."
Money brings out the absolute worst in people.

Families are reading this. We're scared and your comment isn't helping. All we want is to be able to keep our kids at home to care for them.
How do they sleep at night?
Lawyers will steal your settlement as well
This is more common than we even know. I’d venture to guess the vast majority of nonprofits misappropriate funds in one way or another. Same with government agencies.
Next time you want to donate to a nonprofit, take a look at what percentage of their funding goes to administration vs what percentage goes to direct client services/support.
Most nonprofits I have seen do not misappropriate funds. Percentages don't tell the whole story about how effective programs are, you have to dig deeper to see what the impact is. Unfortunately there can be abuses whether for profit, non profit or govt. agency, but you can't make such huge generalizations.
This is horrific. And nothing will be done. That’s devastating.
They should be jailed
Maybe lost my number or doesn't have my email...SAVAGE like Joey on Cheaters.😂👏🏾👌🏾
Been moving that money off-shore for a decade, right where they are now.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was given to a campaign fund.
When it comes to a trust, there should be regular reports from a third party on what money has been spent, where it was spent, and by whom. That way crooks can’t “loan” themselves money and get away with it.
They stole the money and now they are going away to live a good life for them and their kids
