Interpretation of the melody like this requires an understanding of the chords. Sarah Vaughn was equally skilled. From there, the great timbre and intonation of his voice make for the perfect vocalist.
Mandalee Green, yes, as "TheCCCSTL" answered correctly of course, it's the late, great --- Stan Kenton. What I find ever so special about this clip is that, too many folks basically think (I used to as well) that --- band leaders --- such as Stan Kenton, well, they're up on stage waving their arms around leading their band as somewhat of a cheerleader. No, no no --- quite the contrary. A lot of people don't know that the singer (Mel Torme) was a highly talented and sought after professional "drummer" who was also blessed with exceptional "chops" as a singer. Early on he put down the drums to concentrate on his singing. He was known as the --- "Velvet Voice." In this clip you can see how in awe he (Mel) was with the backing he got from Stan's piano playing. It is first rate, top of the line accompaniment of the highest order. By the way, as I type this it is the eve of, "Thanksgiving 2016." We are just beginning our Christmas season (yes I said Christmas) and for the folks out there that might come across this, Mel Torme wrote the world famous song --- "The Christmas Song." It is also known as ---- "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire." I'm a songwriter and I'm endlessly fascinated by the --- "When, Where and How" --- a given song was originated. Mel wrote this on a hot summer day while in New York back in....Well, for those who are interested, you can easily look it up and read it for yourself. Steve
