Played at my mum's funeral, she passed away 3rd June from cancer and pneumonia. I love you so much and am so so greatful for the 31 years I had you in my life.
I’m sorry for your loss. This song always reminds me of my college girlfriend, Kathy. A wonderful person. This was her favorite song. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia in January 1981. She died in April 1981. 3 months later. Far too soon. It’s been over 40 years now and I still think about it. Yes, I’m pathetic.
My father is a retired Naval Officer (Commander) and I spent most of my life around the water and did a lot boating/ sailing (we owned a 25ft sailboat). He sold it when I left for the Army (87-94 at Ft. Bragg). I miss the water and like you, I too tear up when I hear this song….from one Veteran to another…Thank You for your Service…..💪💪🇺🇸
Dear, Whoever is reading this,we don’t know each other and there is a strong possibility we will never meet , but I wish nothing but the best and happiness for you ❤️👍🏿
I used to watch my parents slow dance in the living room to this song. They played this record over and over. When I hear it I’m instantly back there with Mom and Dad. I’m 46 now.
I can remember being abused my mom as a child, and feeling hopeless at times. She struggled with terrible fits of rage. My saving grace as an 8 year old child was my little league football coach, who knew nothing about my repeated abuse, playing this song in his car, driving me home after practice! I still love it till this very day!!! 🙏
I fell in love with my husband listening to this song. July 1980. He passed from pancreatic cancer 10 years ago. I hope he is sailing away in heaven and free from all the pain.
A Friend of mine passed away today, i hope he's sailing through the green fields and mountains, i hope he touch the skies and dance in the wind, travel in the stars e find serenity, i hope he can find peace in the arms of the creator and i hope he can rest in peace.
My dad passed away this past week, this was his favorite song, all though it is very hard to listen to, today I needed something to remind me of him. his favorite quote from this song that indeed in the end came true was: “soon I will be free” my dad suffered from a very rare heart disease and had 5 open heart surgery’s, his first being when he was 13, he was always in the hospital and suffered from to much pain. He is now happy and at peace in his for ever home, heaven. I loved him very much and am happy to say his favorite quote and his wish are now true he is free.
Very touching. Stay strong for your Dad, he loved you from heaven. I lost my Mom two years back from Parkinson's DX and I still miss her so much. God bless you
This song gets more beautiful to me the older I get. It brings me back to my childhood in the 80’s… Back to a time when the sun seemed to shine a bit brighter. Music is so healing. 🌹
I'm Japanese, and I'm 18 years old. When this song was released, I was not born. But somehow I feel like as if I were in 80's, and somehow I feel very sad. But that kind of feelings are so comfortable to me.
Many years ago, my father took my sister and I to Yosemite valley for a camping trip. We must have been 12 years old at the time. I remember looking out of the car window, gazing at the majestic mountains and water falls, the sweeping green meadows and the big blue sky. This song came on the radio and I soaked in the moment - it seemed the perfect soundtrack to the magical experience. Mentioning it to my dad, he instead turned off the radio and asked that we listen to the sound of the flowing water and wind, much to my chagrin. Years later, after putting up a tough yet graceful fight, he died of cancer . He told me at the time that he was not afraid of death, but of dying - because he didn't want to leave us with a bad memory of him suffering through the process. Instead, I saw him at his best, and witnessed just how strong, graceful and loving a person could be in the toughest of times. This song brings back such great memories of my father, and because he turned off the radio while this song played, it made the memory stick in my mind for some odd reason. And when the part of the song says, "Just a dream and the wind to carry me, soon I will be free," it really hits home. I'd like to think my father is out there, gliding effortlessly amongst those same beautiful mountains, waterfalls and meadows, and enjoying the moment with a smile on his face. I love you dad, and miss you every day.
A combination of a timeless great song, coinciding with a family trip in a beautiful & picturesque landscape. Which adds up to a treasured memory that you will forever carry with you, and can be relived whenever you hear this song. Priceless!
My wife and I fell in love to this song in the summer of 1980 when we were just college kids. Married in 1981, and 41 years later, here we are. Its funny how music transports me to times in my life. Still gives me chills and wonderful memories as I look back and listen.
I used to play this every Sunday morning for my mom after breakfast. She died Feb. 7 , 2021, a day before her 87th b-day...she absolutely loved this song even when it first came out back in 1980...R I P, mom.
I was depressed in college. I decided to paint the sunset instead of think about dying. This song was on and colors flooded the sky and shadows of rainbow stretched across a lake. The stars began to appear. 🌟 I painted many important expressions over the many years since. I love life. I love my family. Music is very important to me ❤
Reading the comments made my heart hurt. This songs reminds me of those good days as a kid but, I feel the hurt of the bad days too. I hope the pain in every heart is healed! ❤❤❤❤❤
This song saved me from depression last. I was at the lowest point in my life. I was crying and asking God for relief. Minutes later this song just automatically started playing, I looked up the lyrics and Thanked God. It was like a hug from above. This grounds me along with prayer 🙏🏽 thank you for sharing ❤️
play lots of music , watch comedy -stand up is better , and whenever your thoughts leave you daydreaming ,smell some perfume to bring your concious back to the present ( advice I got )
When I heard this song I was on my highschool days.. played by my Dad..until now I'm still listening to Christopher..I'm on my 40's now...and my eldest kid fell in love with this song...
This was the 1st birthday present I ever got from my dad. It was it is a tape of Christopher Cross actually it was a cassette single with this song and Think of Laura. I fell in love.I used to play it all the time. Now my father has passed away and I still love this song but it makes me sad.
We are playing this at my Dad’s funeral this week. It reminds me of when Dad and I went sailing years ago. He was at peace on the yacht and this song really captures the time we shared together out on the water. RIP Dad
I miss you Kevin. We are dying w/o you. Dad is ruined buddy. I’m crying at the gym right now. This family is so empty w/o you. This song makes me think of you, sailing away in stardust. No more headaches, no more back pain. No more brain injuries. I love you Kevin. Always and forevermore.
Time will heal you beautiful girl. This life can be so tragic at times. Live for your Kevin and enjoy life before it disappears. There is too much life for you to experience.
In 2021 when I turned 50 my son surprised me and played this song on the piano for me- he had secretly practiced it for weeks- this song never fails to move me and now it will be even more special-
@@chenes6879 I'm 61....just hit it 3 days ago...my daugter surprised me when she wanted to see Fletwood Mac ...Saw Stevie Nicks and them in AC in 2019.....your not alone.....we had the grace of having our kids get it....
My father was a Norwegian seafarer from when he was 16 to when he finally retired at 68. This song allways makes me think of him, and being a lil boy riding on his shoulders, as he explained the stars and how to navigate by them, something they don't teach mariners anymore...he was the last of the real vikings, not the TV type.
I'm pretty sure they do make mariners learn how to check the compasses and do morning and evening stars, these days. Apart from having to find the compass errors every watch, if possible, what happens if the sat. nav. goes down?
Love you, Mikey. (Small world ... I was reading the comment and looked up at the name. God bless you and your family) ... I hope to see you again before I leave this world. Love, Stef
As a child I was abused constantly. I was thrown outside naked at the age of 6 I would hide in a bush and cry. People would walk right past me in an apartment complex and not even look twice. It was a different time, a different age. But, certain songs carried you through the roughest times. This is one of those songs for me. I will carry it with me for life. God bless you all. If you are going through a hard time please reach out you are not alone.
Breaks my heart 🥺 I wish you well and I hope you're in a good place today with lots of love and peace. I wish you everything good in life. May the almighty ABBA YAH bless you abundantly ❤️
Was adopted by a wonderful lady from West Virginia...shes passed away 30 years ago this august 2024. Still can see her smile and hear her voice. RIP Mary Jane & smooth sailing my Angel....
This one, yes, takes me right back to when I was a kid, so vividly. I remember the car ride upstate NY watching hang gliders from the parking area a mile below the cliff, I can still see it from so long ago…
When you sail a boat, it is you, the water, the wind and the sky. All you can hear is the air, the splashing against your craft. One gets no closer to nature, to God. Yea, I cry too.
Omg so true. I’ve replayed this 5 times in a row now while I read everyone’s comments. It’s just one of those songs that will never get old and always touch the soul no matter how many Times you listen to it. I get chills each time. ❤️
DollyHolly2012, Music is "Funny" like that. It reaches a Place Deep Down that nothing else can. . . And That's a Good thing for those Lucky enough to experience it. . .
Well, it's not far down to paradise At least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find tranquility Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, believe me It's not far to never never land No reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy Of innocence again Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, believe me Sailing Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me Soon I will be free Fantasy It gets the best of me When I'm sailing All caught up in the reverie Every word is a symphony Won't you believe me? Sailing Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Well, it's not far back to sanity At least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find serenity Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, really, believe me Sailing Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free

Such good music. Timeless and priceless. As a trucker who drove for 28 years, I have cherished those songs so much. All alone on the highways and sometimes the rain and my windshield wipers and the sound of the tires and the engine combine with such good music is all that keeps me awake. As a foreigner in America, I couldn't help but remember my youth in St. Lucia when we used to go to parties and these songs would play. Life was so simple back then. Now times have changed and it makes me cherish these songs even more. The friends of mine who were at the parties all went to different parts of the world and started families and businesses of their own. I wonder, just wonder, what do they think of when they hear songs like these.
I'm American born and raised and grew up with great songs like this and the way it affects you is no different. It's what makes great music so special, timeless and universal. Unfortunately, the music industry has gone off the deep end in the last few decades, promoting total non-musical, meaningless garbage, in particular (C)rap.
"Soon I will be free" - as someone suffering from chronic depression due to difficulties that arise from trying to navigate a neurotypical world as a person on the autism spectrum, this particular line has several meanings to me, from hope for a better future to being one day released from my struggles through passing away.
I'm on the Autism spectrum too. I never felt part of the "normal world" never fit in, never really felt connected to anyone 100%. People who are on the Spectrum live in our own worlds and it's pretty difficult to let outsiders in our heads and hearts. I consider myself half genius and half a fool. We just don't process social norms like most people do. Embrace your uniqueness. Yes, we feel alone, weird and very very awkward in most situations. But long ago I decided my "weirdness" was a gift and once you embrace that idea...you my friend..."will be free" . Don't kill yourself...sell your unique..weird, and awkward beauty to the world. You got one life baby...live it and enjoy the ride cuz it ends too fast.
A lovely comment. I’m suffering from severe depression myself at the moment but was brought to this song today as it reminds me of happier times with my dad who is no longer with me but remembering him on Father’s Day. Let’s hope for a better future 🙏
Fun fact: the song was supposed to start with the guitar in the very first bar, but for some reason, the tape machine with the guitar didn't start until the second bar. So it starts with the strings, everybody is like 'oh that's cool!', and they won a Grammy for best arrangement. Check one of Rick Beato's shorts for the story.
This is my daddy's favorite song. I remember playing this song in our radio in a cold night when I was a kid. Now that my dad passed away this year, I cant stop to cry while listening to this... even now :(
Oh my friend he is with you wherever you go, cry it out and smile that he left such much love in you. I pray for comfort and healing for you my friend ❤️ 🙏🏻
This was my uncle’s favorite song. He passed away a month and a half ago due to Parkinson’s disease. It 100% represents what he always wanted... to be free from the disease. It brings me so much peace to know that he’s in a better place and not shaking anymore. This song reminds me of that.
I'm so sorry. I had a similar experience with my own uncle, he had cancer and always wanted to be free from it and have a peaceful life again. He passed last year and I have dedicated this song to him.
I woke at 4am this morning with this in my head. Why I have no idea why, but what an absolutely beautiful and wonderful song to be woken by and remember after so, so many years.
I hope to go sailing again soon! And this song is so amazing to listen to when sailing in the shore’s with family! Especially when going on a road trip, this song is perfect! ❤️
This song takes me back to my childhood. Sundays after church, Dad putting records on the turn table blaring this song while mom would prepare a feast in the kitchen for Sunday supper. My brothers and I outside playing. Those were such simpler times. Where did they go so quickly? 😞
... : Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see Baby believe me It's not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see Baby believe me Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Fantasy, it gets the best of me When I'm sailing All caught up in the reverie, every word is a symphony Won't you believe me? Sitting with tears in my eyes as soon as his voice kicks in....and then reading the comments....this song brings people back to their childhoods instantly
Well it's not far down to paradise At least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find tranquility The canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see Believe me It's not far to never never land No reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy Of innocence again The canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see Believe me Sailing Takes me away To where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Fantasy It gets the best of me When I'm sailing All caught up in the reverie Every word is a symphony Won't you believe me It's not far back to sanity At least it's not for me And when the wind is right you can sail away And find serenity The canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see Believe me
The greatest, "easy listening", that I have ever experienced in my life. Cross' songs bring me back to 1982 and '83. I was 6 and 7 years old and only knew love and joy in life. I'm 48 now. I still try to experience that happiness and contentment at 48. It never happens though.
After graduation, a college good buddy and I took a road trip from California to Colorado in his drop-top Mustang. Not having lots of money, we mostly camped and ate at diners. But what a great trip it was to have wind in our faces and Sailing playing on the radio! We were free as the wind with not a worry in the world. Then came graduate schools and careers and we lost touch. Since then, I have taken many domestic and international trips, stayed at luxury hotels and cruised on 6 star ships. Yet I still consider that road trip as the best trip of my life.
Wow, you sound just like the narrator in the movie "Stand By Me"; he pretty much said the same thing about his friends that summer. The summer they went to see that body.
What a special time in your lives. I bet your friend holds the same memory. It would be good if you two could meet up again. I was visualizing your memory as I read it, for a moment I felt as if I were there too!
"You can find tranquillity". I do hope the lyrics bring peace and joyful memories whenever this is played. It was my brothers favourite album and we have fond memories playing the LP even in his final days Respect to you and your family. Robert from Manchester
He wrote this about his childhood with an alcoholic abusive father and how he found happiness with his friends father that was like a great father figure to him. He spoke about this on the Howard Stern show in 1995
Reading the comments on this it just blows my mind that 40 years later this song is still relevant and how we are all now connected from this song and all the ways it has meaning for each of us. Crazy what music can do to the soul.
This is the most peaceful and reminiscent song of all time. The rythmn and the flow is soothing that all you think about is Simply SAILING. Thanks Christopher for Sailing Thru!!
In 1980 when this came out it was one of those songs that my mom and I listened to over and over. It defined that time for us (it was right after a car accident that put the two of us in the hospital for months and took the lives of two of my parents' long-time friends) and we always reminisced over that time when we lived to tell the tale. Fast forward to September 15, 1987, my mom died from cancer when she was a couple months shy of turning 36, and I was 15. I still play this every anniversary of her death and cry my eyes out for hours as I play every song that reminds me of her and look at old pictures of her. Today is the 35 year anniversary of that day, but it feels like yesterday. I am so grateful that this song is such a special part of my (our) life and my soul. When I listen to it, it makes me feel like she's still here with me, like I can just reach out and touch her. I would give anything to see her once more. But at least I have this song. And my heart goes out to all of those who have shared their heartfelt stories on here. I can truly relate.
Avelyn, my heart goes out to you. You lost your beloved mother at such a young age. She would be proud of you. Remember she is beside you in spirit every day. Stay strong. .....
Omg! Your story touches me so much! I'm 55 and every time I had to list my favorite song as a kid, this was always my song. It's a beautiful song but it also has a bit of melancholy as it describes escaping into a better place. I was abused growing up and so the idea of escaping was very appealing. I'm sorry for your car accident and losing your mother especially at such a tender age. I'm lucky that I was able to have my mother until I was 44. She was only 62 because she had me when she was only 17. We had a somewhat tumultuous relationship but no matter. When she died, a part of me died. I never understood how connected we truly were. Thank you again for sharing your remarkable story ❤️
I am so sorry for your loss. I am still listening to this song after 50 years old. This song relaxes me over and over again. I can just keep hitting the Rewind button over and over again. Lol. I am going through something major in my life, so you are not alone. But we know a God who is going to help us through all we are going through in life. The reason is, He is bigger than life itself,"! Stay Blessed, Girl!
It's not far down to paradise At least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find tranquility The canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see Believe me It's not far to never never land No reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy Of innocence again The canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see Believe me Sailing Takes me away To where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Fantasy It gets the best of me When I'm sailing All caught up in the reverie Every word is a symphony Won't you believe me Sailing Takes me away To where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free It's not far back to sanity At least it's not for me And when the wind is right you can sail away And find serenity The canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see Believe me Sailing Takes me away To where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free
Thank you for taking the time and effort to post this... I can tell it was a labor of love. I was 14 in 1980 when this came out. Lots of warm memories.
This song takes me back to my childhood during the 80's. A time when life was much simpler and people talked to each other, face to face, for hours. If you needed answers, you rode your bike to the library and hung out with Dewey Decimal. The entire summer was spent at the public pool where the air was full of chlorine, kids were taking turns seeing how far they could swim underwater on one breath, and for snacks we had Mello Yello and Chick-o-Sticks. Riding my bike all over town because everyone knew everyone and we looked out for each other and didn't have to worry about getting snatched up or shot at. If you got in trouble, your bike was never fast enough to beat the phone call home to your parents and you were held accountable for your actions. No cellphones, no computers, no video games (unless your parents had money). We weren't allowed to sit in the house on a sunny day and we never ate a meal at home that wasn't at the table. My God, how I miss those years. I wish I would have realized how special they were.
I always tear up when I hear this. My teenaged son played it a million times. The sound bounced off his bedroom walls. He is now 41 and a successful sea captain, taking customers far out to sea off Texas to catch some big ones. He feels "free" on the water, he says. It calms his mind.
This song is beyond magic, especially if you’re an 80’s kid. Wish more of todays kids could feel this. Take it back, my 15 year old daughter does. Crazy how all us 40 something’s kids’ feel our music now. Was magical. CC is an icon.
Monterrey CA in 1981, on the dance floor with a beautiful lady wishing the moment would never end. Memories fade but music can bring them back with startling clarity.
My 84 year old grandfather passed away last October 7 due to a heart attack alongside series of complications including lung cancer and tubercolosis. He was my favorite in the family, but it's now time for him to come home. Now, I may now let the Lord sail you away into your eternal home.
What's so wrong about sex? If people didn't have it none of you would be here? Same goes for nudity, we weren't born with clothing, why are we so angry when a person isn't afraid to show their body? And politics? Music has been an incredible vehicle for politics, Jazz, Soul, Funk and folk musicians were actively involved the Civil Rights Movement Movement. Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Frank Zappa, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Kurt Cobain, Sam Cooke, Tupac, Willie Colon etc. all wrote incredibly important and beautiful social music that changed people's minds and hearts for the better! I've always disliked this narrow minded idea to box-in artists. To try and cut their creativity for conformist idea of "good" or "well-behaved". I love this song, but that doesn't mean it should be used blueprint to discard so many other interesting forms of musical expression.
Nothing wrong with sex, sex is indisociable from love, well being and life. It is life, sex is at the start of life. I guess what he’s trying to say is this song manages to touch your soul and awaken emotions without unnecessary sexual stimulation like a lot of mediocre music feel like they need to use to catch attention
This song is a memory of a better time. Before all of the current b.s. I weep for this generation. They have no concept of the soul and the music that touches it in a positive way like this song, and the times that this song came out. The 80's were a blessed time looking back. I wish we could go back to those times, but at the same time looking forward to Jesus' return.
Someday I will be sailing. . My mom said that this song reminds her of me. Christopher Cross your music takes me to a place that i will soon be. Thank you for your music.
Chris. My mom and dad lived, and loved, every song on this amazing timeless album. And now, 40 years later...........jeez im old...........i am blessed enough to share your gift with my little girl...you have no idea how much joy you have bought to my family, via your art. God bless you! From the bottom of my heart, Thank you!!! Please be well, and be safe!!! God bless!!
God bless you for your words! I, too, was captured by this soothing melody when I was 17. Today I think that Chris had a heavenly inspiration while writing this masterpiece.
The most smoothest, softest, tranquil music theory ever...combined with his voice and the perfect studio/sound engineers...everything in balance. Perfect...absolutely flawless
I sang this song to my cat when we would sit & watch the birds. She passed away today and this song fills me with love and better times with her. RIP Maggie. ♥️🐾
Its 6 AM as I write this... Lost my little brother in February ; 24 years old.. kid was literally born 20 years after this song.. Yet HE put ME on to this song along with so many others.. A soul ahead of his time ; as a 30 year old man.. I cry each and every time this song plays.. Yet I cant get enough of it.. to everybody fighting battles with music as our refuge.. Chin up chest out 💯 ❤
It's summer 1980 & I'm sailing from Falmouth to the Vineyard. The sun is high in the sky, a warm wind is blowing through my hair and this song is on the radio...
I’m a 12 year old and love older music because my grandpa passed away and listens to it with my dad and now me and my dad listen to it together and this is our song and I always wished I grew up in this time because although we didn’t have video games you wouldn’t even think of it because they barley were what they are today and just being friends with almost everyone it seemed like the world was a great place back then and this song will always mean something for me especially when my dad passes
I remember in like 83' ish my dad would take me to the beach all the time...this song would always be on in the car..had a lot of fun...miss those days...miss you dad..r.i.p..❤
Was in the Navy in the second half of the 70's and remember sailing the world's oceans especially during the summer months. Remember sailing through the Greek islands on a Sunday where we only had to stand our watches and ships work would be back again Monday morning. Made the best of those relaxing times watching the bluest seas you ever saw and majestic mountains rising out of the sea. Reminded me of Forest Gump running across this beautiful country. Sitting on deck with my shipmates realizing how lucky we were to experience this tranquil beauty being at peace but knowing at any moment we might have to sail into harms way. Years later with the internet available I found all my shipmates and have a reunion every other year to remember those times with the closest brothers you would ever have. Every year there are fewer of us but our bond will remain as we pass. RIP my brothers calm seas to those of us that remain.
This song won a grammy in 1981; song of the year. After all this time, it's still as beautiful as it was the day I first heard it. Classics never go out of style. Enjoy.
I believe he win the best new artist of the year as well. The dreaded Grammy curse of newest artist of the year has a track record of being a curse... I believe I have 2 of these on vinyl. Love me some vinyl now...and zipps tennies...
I think he won it all that year, I think it was 4 awards, best album, best song, best New artist, I forget the last category, Sailing, is one of those songs that never gets old. My Playlist has these songs: Sailing - Christopher Cross Landslide - Fleetwood Mac Time in a bottle - Jim Croce Careless whisper - George Michael Hotel California - The Eagles Waiting for a girl like you - Foreigner Ordinary World - Duran Duran Arthur's Theme - Christopher Cross Between the sheets - The Isley Brothers
Won Record of the Year for this song, too. Record of the Year is more about performance and production, while Song of the Year is more about composition.
This particular song helped me through a difficult summer in 1980, and is easily the most beautiful song on this incredible album. Thank you forever Christopher Cross.
I lived in Mauritius for a year and used to go to the beach at 7am every morning to sit on the beach. I remember 1 particular day getting out of the water and sitting on a gorgeous beach looking at the sea and this came on a playlist on my phone. If captured the most perfect moment of peace and happiness . Every time I her this song my memory takes me back there it was just a magical moment . It’s such a beautiful song
This debut album from Chirstopher Cross, specifically 'Sailing', take me to place just where I need to be to relax ........ Sailing! Christopher ........ Thank you for your simply smooth ebb and flow artistry!
This song is truly TRANSCENDANT! This gentleman never, ever disappoints. Every song he's done is excellent! But this one goes well beyond that. A musical version of the " Serenity Prayer " if ever there was one.......better than counting to ten during some of life's harsher moments.......Thank-you Christopher Cross ( I'd venture to say you have saved lives with this masterpiece!!). Note to Christopher Cross: You have made so many lives richer by sharing your true gift of song..... I know all of us out here are praying for your speedy recovery! Stay strong, and God bless!!
I’m a 46 year old black man…

I’m sorry for your loss. This song always reminds me of my college girlfriend, Kathy. A wonderful person. This was her favorite song. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia in January 1981. She died in April 1981. 3 months later. Far too soon. It’s been over 40 years now and I still think about it. Yes, I’m pathetic.

You're not pathetic Richard. You have a kind heart and soul. God bless. 🙏 ✌️
I am an old salt that built fishing boats and joined the navy. I am not ashamed to say I shed tears listening to this song. It's sublime and majestic
My father is a retired Naval Officer (Commander) and I spent most of my life around the water and did a lot boating/ sailing (we owned a 25ft sailboat). He sold it when I left for the Army (87-94 at Ft. Bragg). I miss the water and like you, I too tear up when I hear this song….from one Veteran to another…Thank You for your Service…..💪💪🇺🇸
my boys are in the navy, my dad taught me to sail and nothing can take the place of that free spirit amen!

I used to watch my parents slow dance in the living room to this song. They played this record over and over. When I hear it I’m instantly back there with Mom and Dad. I’m 46 now.
You saw your parents as human beings, like you are now. Often, we never or rarely do. Cherish that memory.
time goes too fast if we are happy and goes too slow when we are sad
Same!!!!!!!
I love your parents!
What a beautiful memory
I can remember being abused my mom as a child, and feeling hopeless at times. She struggled with terrible fits of rage. My saving grace as an 8 year old child was my little league football coach, who knew nothing about my repeated abuse, playing this song in his car, driving me home after practice! I still love it till this very day!!! 🙏

So sorry for your loss.. you both were so fortunate to have each other in your lives🙏

Priceless!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful memory. I wish you the best.

It would be nice to learn traditions should always be cherish and pass on
I am pretty sure that your father was a badass. Beautiful story.
I'm pretty sure they do make mariners learn how to check the compasses and do morning and evening stars, these days. Apart from having to find the compass errors every watch, if possible, what happens if the sat. nav. goes down?

They remember you and those times my friend.
Some of us Canadians feel the same, believe me wait and see. I used to have to re
Timeless and priceless indeed.

"Soon I will be free" - as someone suffering from chronic depression due to difficulties that arise from trying to navigate a neurotypical world as a person on the autism spectrum, this particular line has several meanings to me, from hope for a better future to being one day released from my struggles through passing away.
💚
Exactly
SWEETNESS JESUS LOVES AND I DO TOO
PLEASE KNOW YOU ARE NEVER ALONE.. YOU CAN JOY AND PEACE HERE AS WELL.
JUST CALL OUT TO JESUS HE IS WAITING ON YOU
I'm on the Autism spectrum too.
The utter beauty of this song gives me chills. You can feel the wind on your face.
This is my daddy's favorite song. I remember playing this song in our radio in a cold night when I was a kid. Now that my dad passed away this year, I cant stop to cry while listening to this... even now :(

Brings to mind the television series ROUTE 66.
What a special time in your lives. I bet your friend holds the same memory. It would be good if you two could meet up again. I was visualizing your memory as I read it, for a moment I felt as if I were there too!
Amen brother
wow...thats beautiful
My brother was a US NAVY veteran and this was his favorite song. He passed away in 2016 and it is fitting that his epitaph reads, "GONE SAILING."❤❤❤
Lo lamento mucho, que Dios te de la paz.
Omg! Bless him and you! 🙏
Rest in peace sailor ⛵🙏
"You can find tranquillity". I do hope the lyrics bring peace and joyful memories whenever this is played. It was my brothers favourite album and we have fond memories playing the LP even in his final days Respect to you and your family. Robert from Manchester
@@robertbest3796 Thank you! Yes, the song never fails to bring joyful memories and heartache as well. I'm sorry for your loss.
He wrote this about his childhood with an alcoholic abusive father and how he found happiness with his friends father that was like a great father figure to him. He spoke about this on the Howard Stern show in 1995
Yeah, we know. We also have RUclips.

Reading the comments on this it just blows my mind that 40 years later this song is still relevant and how we are all now connected from this song and all the ways it has meaning for each of us. Crazy what music can do to the soul.
Every so often, a song is made that speaks to the human soul and consequently transcends generations. The beauty of timeless music.
Thanks for your continuous love and support Vanilla ❤️❤️
How long have you been a fan of mine Vanilla???
Music can save this world. I know it has kept me above ground many times. It brings you to a higher place. Imagine this world without music.
@TortillasAreNotBiceps-wr1jf If it wasn't for music I would definitely not be here. Without music there is no life only toasterbath
This is the most peaceful and reminiscent song of all time. The rythmn and the flow is soothing that all you think about is Simply SAILING. Thanks Christopher for Sailing Thru!!
AMEN!!!!!
I was lucky enough to win this album at the skating rink 🥰
Wow, that's a powerful story, I love the song even more now. I wish you well Avelyn , and hope you find the most profound peace and joy.
Sorry for your loss. 💗

It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Thank you!

Timothy young Amen!🦋
And you had to be home when the street lights came on. Saturday night at the roller rink. Dad will pick you up at 10pm.

I always tear up when I hear this. My teenaged son played it a million times. The sound bounced off his bedroom walls. He is now 41 and a successful sea captain, taking customers far out to sea off Texas to catch some big ones. He feels "free" on the water, he says. It calms his mind.
There's no better thing than feeling free doing what we like
What a heaven voice does he have? It's his voice that leads the song, he does it
This song is beyond magic, especially if you’re an 80’s kid. Wish more of todays kids could feel this. Take it back, my 15 year old daughter does. Crazy how all us 40 something’s kids’ feel our music now. Was magical. CC is an icon.

My 84 year old grandfather passed away last October 7 due to a heart attack alongside series of complications including lung cancer and tubercolosis. He was my favorite in the family, but it's now time for him to come home. Now, I may now let the Lord sail you away into your eternal home.
0% Sex
0% Drugs
0% Nudity
0% Violence
0% Politics
100% Great music!
@James ....LMAO
I love songs with all those things, and I love this song. Don’t turn such a nice song into a “uebegsv today’s generation blah blah” thing.

I don't know why, but listening to this song makes me want to cry and tell my loved ones how much I love them.

The power of music...when it mesmerizes. This tune is emblematic of the wistful, flowing, fleeting notion of a lifetime.
This was my mother's suicide note she wrote every word, I was 8. I'm 52 now about to join her
3 months since you wrote that. I hope you are doing well

Amen!
Better times just up ahead as the LORD will soon return!
Someday I will be sailing. . My mom said that this song reminds her of me. Christopher Cross your music takes me to a place that i will soon be. Thank you for your music.

My Playlist has these songs:
Sailing - Christopher Cross
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
Time in a bottle - Jim Croce
Careless whisper - George Michael
Hotel California - The Eagles
Waiting for a girl like you - Foreigner
Ordinary World - Duran Duran
Arthur's Theme - Christopher Cross
Between the sheets - The Isley Brothers
Won Record of the Year for this song, too. Record of the Year is more about performance and production, while Song of the Year is more about composition.
This particular song helped me through a difficult summer in 1980, and is easily the most beautiful song on this incredible album. Thank you forever Christopher Cross.
I lived in Mauritius for a year and used to go to the beach at 7am every morning to sit on the beach. I remember 1 particular day getting out of the water and sitting on a gorgeous beach looking at the sea and this came on a playlist on my phone.
