Cowan Lake Frogging & Worming For Bass in the Lily Pads - CKF Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament

- Fished the last regular tournament of the Cincinnati Kayak Fishing Trail's season at Cowan lake on September 12, had to finish near the top to make the end of season Classic, and fell short with a respectable 9th place finish (out of 39 anglers). I did manage to catch 5 keeper bass over 12", but not enough size to crack that top tier. I was determined not to go out to Cowan and throw a crankbait all day like I usually do... I was going to start back in a cove and fish lily pads! My plan was to rotate a Spro Poppin' Frog, a weightless Senko (green pumpkin black flake), and a Z-Man Evergreen Jackhammer (Spot Remover, with a 4" Keitech Easy Shiner (Gizzard Shad) trailer), and stay back in there until I ran out of bites. Well, I stayed in the lily pads the whole day and missed about 25 frog blowups, finally getting a tip from a buddy that my hookset is too weak with a frog, and I need to put a lot more muscle in it (and this video footage shows he is totally right!... who knew?! ). But I am really happy with how I did on the Senko... I made an adjustment after watching a buddy throw a worm, and realized I don't cast nearly close enough to things. So my goal was to get that Senko right up to the side of the pads, wood, whatever... and it worked! Now I have much more confidence in my finesse fishing, and I really want to go try it on other lakes and other situations!
Thanks to Brian Tacy for running the Cincinnati Kayak Fishing Trail, and for setting up these great event so I we can get out and play on the water!
Thanks to Strictly Sail & Kayak for the use of the amazing Hobie Lynx... we had 18mph winds, and I never would have been able to fish the way I wanted if I was in a less stable, agile, kayak... and I love being able to stand up to flip a worm or frog fish. Also thanks to Strictly Sail for supporting Cincinnati Kayak Fishing for another season, and for all you do for our angling community!

I know I don't talk about my equipment enough, and I often get asked about my favorite rods and reels, so I'm going to try to start telling y'all... I almost exclusively use St. Croix rods (best rods on earth!), preferring MojoBass spinning rods and AvidX casting rods. I pair those with Shimano reels... all of my baitcasters are Shimano Chronarchs, and my spinning reels are all Shimano Stradics. I use Seaguar InvzX Fluorocarbon line, between 10lbs and 15lbs, on both my baitcasters and spinning reels, and PowerPro Maxcuatro braid (50lb-60lb usually) for my frog rod. I almost always use Mustad KVD Grip-Pin 2X Fine Wire Hooks (1/0, 2/0 or 3/0, usually), and either BassPro brand or Strike King Tour Grade Tungsten weights for texas rigging (usually between 1/16oz and 1/4oz, depending on the depth and the wind). I'm not in any way sponsored by these companies, I just love their products!
Great getting to watch you at Cowan! Great fishing!
Thanks!
AWESOME VID!! I learned a ton about kayak fishing tournaments! I enjoyed the camaraderie and it was nice meeting you!
Thanks, great to meet you as well! I hope you can camp with us some next year!
Our adorable Mel Froggin' and Wormin' for bait..... who knew?
Good Job! Loved the video
Thanks!
Way to get on all those fish! That's some interesting habitat to my West Coast eyes but I can see why there'd be a lot of bass in there, and aggressive probably because the cover gives them a sense of security. I like the way those bass jump all over the place, it makes it such an exciting challenge. In Southern California surf fishing the premier species is probably the California halibut, but truth to tell they can be incredibly lazy non-fighters. I've hooked some good sized ones where I just reel and they're practically hydroplaning right in on the surface almost as if I hooked a piece of cardboard or something.
I don't bass fish but I find it interesting learning about it from your videos, which are so much more down-to-earth and accessible than most of the other dedicated bass anglers on RUclips. Also, all my life I've primarily been a shore fisherman but you're making me want to get a Hobie Lynx more and more with each video.
Aw thanks, that is nice to hear! There is a channel out there somewhere (can't think of it right now) that the guy launches his Lynx from the beach in the surf, and he says he loves it!
I’m kinda disappointed we didn’t get to see your snake wrangling skills. Haha. Great job.
🤣 I know, right? Now that would have been a good video!
Great job I have only fished Cowan lake 1 time. And used a crank bait Caught 7 small bass. Might fish Cowan next week.
I usually love a crankbait at Cowan, but it just hasn't produced for me this year. But with these cooler nights, hopefully the fall reaction bite will be kicking in soon!
Thanks for sharing your fishing excursions with us. I hope that the end to the Cincinnati Kayak Trails Tournaments does not mean you are storing away your fishing equipment for polishing your ski's for the soon to be upon us ski season. --- I believe you fished the "Snowball Tournament" last year in the middle of winter. Will you be doing that again? ---- Thanks for sharing the equipment you use. I find it quite useful. It is interesting to watch as you make adjustments throughout the season, as well as adjustments from one body of water to the next. Thanks and Take Care.
Thanks! Once ski season starts, I really focus on that for the 13-15 weeks it runs. But I’ll fish til the ski area opens!
Episode thirty four of Mill House series. Andy chats about his olympic ski career (the up's and down's of winter sport competition). I thought you'd enjoy a listen. I thought it was very interesting.
SOLID FISHING THERE
Thanks!
looks like you had a great day fishing despite the wind. :)
Well, I hid from the wind in a cove! I'm too old and lazy to battle that wind all day if I have another option! I was prepared to head out in it if I couldn't find a bite in the cove... just happy I didn't have to!
@@GirlGoneFishing Pretty soon I will be able to do a lot more fishing. We are moving back home to Michigan in less than a week & I would love to get into kayak fishing.
@@MakinSawdust I’m jealous you’ll be in Michigan! Amazing fishing up there!
Wow what a nice video. I started fishing a frog my last trip out (for the first time). I had 8 huge blowups and 0 fish. I waited, felt their wait and reeled in weeds. I am thinking/hoping that I'm not setting the hook hard enough - thanks for the tip (I hope!)
Thanks! I didn’t know if all that extra stuff about my hook set discovery would be good or bad, but I thought I’d leave it in a see how it was received. What I learned this trip was that not only do you wait those 3 seconds, but take that time to reel down so you have maximum leverage for the hook set. Then haul back on the rod so dramatically it is like you are making a joke of how exaggerated it is. I think that is the secret, and I cannot wait to get out and try again! Let me know how it goes for you!
@@GirlGoneFishing im gonna try that next time i get to go out!
Awesome video as usual! Could you do a short video of your kayak setup and how you keep all your gear from falling over? I assume it’s much different than your sit in setup. Keep up the good videos, thanks.
Thanks! I have 2 rigging videos up for the Lynx… here is the original one as I was first setting it up when I got it in June, and the next one is an updated one I did after making some changes after a couple months of tournaments with the Lynx. So here is my original rigging video: ruclips.net/video/xfn83ctFo2Y/видео.html
And here is the one I did last month showing a few changes/ new additions to my setup: ruclips.net/video/zIBj3tBMdOY/видео.html
Great videos. I am facilitated by kayak fishing. Watching your proficiency makes me think I could do it.
Of course you could do it! Just go for it!
Dang girl, my heart sank when that big one came off at the boat. I've been there and done it too, so I could feel your emotions. You certainly found the fish on this one, so that's a plus. That was the thick stuff you was in, for sure. Awesome vid as always. Be looking for the next one.
Thanks, Wayne! As I was reeling the chatterbait fish in, and saw that rod on my net, I thought well this isn't going to go well. Sigh..
Dang! Looks like you need to let fish take the frog, thn set the hook. Nice job!
Definitely need to put more umph into the hookset!
I had the EXACT same type of day at cowan...must have missed 15 on a black frog...changed color of frog to a bluegill color, and landed 2...sometimes color matters...check out the lake fork trailer hook made for frogs...it actually works!
I always forget about trying a different color! This frog was green pumpkin with an orange “mouth”, I should have switched it up!
well I like that spot better than mine!!
🤣🤣🤣 I'd never fished back there with the pads grown up, it was really fun! You and I should go hit it again after Rocky Fork!
You would have had 100 fish that day back in that cove, since you manage to actually hook the frog blowups!
Awesome video I can’t wait for that kayak get in stock ai can buy it
Thanks! It is the best kayak!
9th place is just to prepare you for next time with Win, Place or Show... Guuurl!
Definitely a good finish for me, always happy with a Top 10!
Dang!!! That 2nd one looked at least 16” or better!!! Good haul overall!!!
Yeah that one made me really sad since it was a stupid mistake on my part, being lazy, and I know better.
How was the Hobie drive in all that vegetation?
It was no problem, if I got in really deep in the pads, I split the pedals to move the fins flush against the hull and paddled, but mostly it would power through.
My advice with the frog fishing would be to ditch the spro frog. Those frogs are way too hard for me. I miss way too many with that frog. Get the booyah pad crasher. Way softer and cheaper. Hooks them way better. And I think waiting a few seconds is overrated. If the bass is going to eat it. He’s going to eat it right away. Just set the hook as hard as you can straight up. ✅
I have to find somewhere the frog bite is on so I can practice! I need lots of practice!
@@GirlGoneFishing it should be on soon with the warm weather finally here in Ohio!
