Their live rituals have only gotten more wild and amazing since this one. For one thing, they now have a tradition that when theyre touring North America, they'll invite local indigenous people to participate in their shows. So when they get to this song in American and Canadian shows, there's a chance that Pow Wow dancers might dance their way onstage at this point
When I saw them in California this was the final song and all the viking looking folk were dancing and then suddenly native Americans from tribes of my area appeared and danced with them in their tribal garb. It was mesmerizing and inspirational. Tears filled my eyes, and I felt like spirits were flowing all around me
@@BigKnecht Apparently they put this together 3 days before the show. What they were practicing was not what they performed here. ;p The 'old guy drummer' and the backup singer were late additions - Members of other bands joining them just for this performance (they haven't performed with Heilung again elsewhere).
@@BigKnecht Christopher, Maria, Jonas, Jacob, Juan and Alex are all seasoned musicians and have been performing (not necessarily together) since early school years. Kai is a writer (poet) and professional tattoo artist. As Heilung they had only had one small performance in front of friends and acquaintances. This WAS in fact their first public performance.
I've been to 100s of concerts. This is the one I'll remember. I left this concert, driving over the bay bridge... I remember feeling... sad.... That it was over. It wasn't a concert. It was a ritual. It woke something inside.
Hamrer Hippyer is the maddest song, in my mind. The droning, fast drums, flashing lights, brutal singing in the first half gets my blood PUMPING and makes me go wild, but then the DROP into the Merseburg spells just takes my breath away. Literally, not just figuratively.
„Blood to blood Bone to bone So it shall be glued together“ It's the Merseburg Charm, written in medieval High German, but it stems from pagan germanic times and tells, how Odin and Thor were healing a foal with a broken leg. Healing = Heilung
Also, just to add, but you were curious about the other people on stage with them that were carrying the spears and shields. When you can, watch the live performance of the song Alfadhirhaiti and you will see what they're all about.
I was also going to suggest that song, though more for some of the other vocal effects that the men come up with for that track... I agree, though, he should absolutely check that one out.
Hamrer Hippyer is such a cathartic ending to their live ritual! I saw them live last September…Crowd surfing, dancing & singing between the band and crowd breaks down all barriers. We are all one! Christoper Juul (on the left) runs all the loops and sound engineering for the band. The sung parts from this one comes from the Merseberg Charms. Much of their lyrical content comes from ancient texts. Keep it up!
sôse bênrenki, sôse bluotrenki, sôse lidirenki: bên zi bêna, bluot zi bluoda, lid zi geliden, sôse gelîmida sîn. So - to give you a small explanation of the Second Merseburg Charm :D Odin and Baldur were riding through a forest when Baldurs horse got a dislocated ankle ... so Odin spoke this spell like above mentioned ... and it means something like: "Like leg sprain - like blood sprain - like limb sprain Leg to leg, blood to blood, limb to limb so as they were glued together" You can also see some similarities to todays german words: bén - Bein; bluot - Blut; lidi - Glied or Gliedmasen; gelimida - geleimt ...also Odin is called "Wotan" here which is - if I am correct - the version for Odin in todays areas were Germany is today.
First off, thank you for doing this song. I believe this was my suggestion and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Secondly, you are 100% right, it feels really weird listening to Heilung indoors, especially if it's a live show.
I believe that most of their instruments are made by themselves and one of the drummers does do workshops where he teaches people how to make their own drums. And the new performances of some these songs hit a lot different now that they have bigger stages to preform on you will definitely tell that it seems a lot less crowded if you do get to go see them in concert, which I highly recommend. I was able to see them live last year and it is hands down one of the best concerts I've been to, them along with wardruna (which I also recommend you looking more into, I saw your reaction to helvegen some of his other songs like skugge and solringen I think you'd like), which I also saw last made me feel like I was in another world everything was just so beautifully preformed nothing will ever feel the same as their live performances.
It’s sooooo much better than you appreciated at first - you looked spellbound as it went on - we can’t analyse it because it’s a rare moment of us and bears that’s genius
YES the Merseburg chants, oldest german documents dated between 2th and 4th a.c. :3 But yes Heilung is awesome. Remember, that we all are brothers All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted
I can confirm that they do use looper pedals. You can one of the men (not good with their names) setting up a loop with the big horn at the beginning of "Krigsgaldr." Moreover, my own experience with looper pedals says that at around 3:34 the man shown is actively interacting with the pedals based on the body language. Whether there's any tracks involved I don't know, but if I had to bet, I'd guess that the voices at least at the beginning are a series of loops set up in real time and then manipulated on the fly through some cool but probably basic audio engineering. If you want to try something super trippy some time, get a slicer pedal! I got one back in April and am still getting used to that weird thing. Regarding getting in touch with Heilung, a possible lead could be reaching out to a fellow reaction channel called The Charismatic Voice. The host, Elizabeth, once interviewed Maria Franz. Maybe they could tell you how they contacted Heilung? Moreover, I've seen Heilung be fairly responsive on social media, especially Facebook of all places. I know that's not much, but maybe it'll help.
Hey there! Great that you are getting more and more into Heilung! if they are coming near you GO SEE IT! If you want to see Maria Franz and Christopher Juul play a wonderful Scandinavian folk song without them wearing the face paints, you should react to their Scandinavian Folk Song video called Songleikr Ulvetime (HOUR OF THE WOLF).. Songleikr is the other music project that Maria Franz and Christopher Juul produce as well as Heilung! This Hour of the Wolf just shows them in their more natural state! :)
Fr man, you HAVE to see them live. You’re doing yourself dirty if you don’t. Take it from my first hand experience, if you think you’re in awe through a screen you’re not going to believe the energy when you’re actually there and a part of the ritual. It’s the most memorable experience of my life, it’s a core memory for SURE.
You aren't even spoiling the show for yourself by watching these videos because the real thing is so much more intense that it will be a total surprise to you. The male shaman has a background in traditional tattooing and shamanism so that makes sense of the music to me. A certain ancient medicinal fungus might also be involved. Hammrer Hippyer is their closer and it's great at transitioning you back to normal consciousness. I recommend reacting to Othan next. Its performed as a spell of protection, invoking Odin himself.
Only one song which included Aurora. I need to hear more Wardruna. Here's the vid I did when you have time: ruclips.net/video/Icz37uas9pU/видео.htmlsi=CMlhBanIxTjxMW14
“Buffalo sheep,” 😂 you’re not far off. Musk oxen are the step between bovine (cattle) and ovids (sheep). Their taxonomic genus is Ovibos. Also, you said you want to play with them. That’s possible! They audition Warriors all the time, just send in a tape of you doing Hakkrskaldr, they might pick you!
I have hard time believing there's no looping happening. It sure looks like it some times....and I've seen a few people mention that they use them. Nothing wrong with it either way. It's absolutely amazing.
You are right on man this song should be played and performed in a forest with a big fire and incense of juniper and sage being burned to honor the gods and ancestors
Evening Jeremy 😊 Im gonna cop flak for this but here goes...... Love your reactions, personal and heartfelt and joyous as ever 👍 but this track kinda left me cold.... Alot of fantastic elements ( i love tribal drumming) but the overall left me a wanting something more....not sure if its a music thing or an emotive performance thing..... It is intriguing but not quite the done deal if you take my meaning.....but for sure those drums were incredible.... the rest was sadly, imo, somewhat lacking....
Thanks for watching, and taking a risk to say something that might not be taken so well. I think you’re absolutely entitled to your opinion. And especially with something as special, or as specific as this…it’s not always going to grab everyone the same. Nothing wrong with that at all. I’m just fascinated by it. Definitely hope to see them live!
That's an honest take and respectfully made. I'm a huge fan of Heilung since discovering them several years ago but it's understandable that not everyone will find it to their liking. Thank you for both giving it a chance and your opinion in a way that doesn't try to devalue anyone else's.
This was Heilung’s first ever performance. The current lineup (warriors and singers) are insanely energetic during Hamrer Hippyer. They crowd surf and dance all over the stage. They have for sure been doing this before. Dozens of times in random european forests just by themselves. This was way too clean to be a flune.
