Does a Bioactive Vivarium Offer ANYTHING to a Reptile or Amphibian? | Progressing Your Reptile Care

  • Bioactivity is a bit of a fad in herpetoculture at the moment. People seem to think that the addition of a few invertebrates to the substrate of a vivarium suddenly makes it a paradise for reptiles and amphibians, but is this notion really true?
Today, I illustrate the proper application of bioactivity within reptile keeping, and I put forwards what I believe to be the biggest hurdle in progressing your reptile care.

I live in Alaska so it is physically impossible for me to keep reptiles outdoors full time or else risk some really frozen herp-sickles. Bioactivity is a major step I've seen to try and give any reptile that eventually ends up in my care a closer step on recreating nature. However I appreciate the message that, like every field in science, recreating nature indoors is an ever evolving process. From adding uvb to all enclosures, simulating sunlight and sunset, rain via misting/fogging systems, and even seeing a few people adding computer fans to recreate natural wind cycles. I hope to be a part of your number making ever evolving little slices of nature!

I am absolutely loving this little journey im going on i absolutely absolutely love they u guys are not sitting here saying hey i know everything!! Instead ur here saying hey this is what i do know this is what i want to know and this is what we have learned thus far soooo loving this i currently only keep lizards i absolutely struggle emotionally and mentally (meaning i know i need to learn so much more and i do every single day) with whether or not i think we shud keep these beautiful animals indoor at all until atleast we have found a truly adequate way to replicate the sun in its entirety for them so i currently have 10 lizards Total 6 beardies and 4 leopard geckos ive recently upgraded all my leos to 40g and one is in an enclosure i built that is 5ft long by 1.5ft wide and about 18 inches high( which was for one of my beardies until she outgrew it i feel they need a minimum of 4 3ft personally id love to give them so much more if i cud ) and found they use every bit of the space ive given them however my bearded dragons i know need so much space so i will never use anything smaller than a 4x2x2 for an adult beardie and as far as the sun for them i personally live in new york so if i was to keep them outside id only be able to do so during the warmer months of the year and im still going thru an internal (lack of knowledge as well as fear) battle on whether or not it wud be safe im on long island and we get a shit ton of fire flies which can be deadly to bearded dragons if ingested! (Any thoughts) so what i do is during the warmer months i spend as many hours each day taking them outside in the natural sun when they were babys it was so much easier i simply took there enclosure right outside i kept my babys in those hard plastic shipping containers that companies use to ship there good with the interlocking lids with hardware cloth on top to olace lights and keep them in they were 24"x18xi think 18 maybe a lil taller which was perfect for the baby's and i had so many so i was able to do a max of 7 per bin most were like 5 or 6 and i transferred out the ones that were dominant into there own space as they grew i had a friend that worked at 711 and let me take as many as i needed lol but id take the whole thing outside !! Now that they are grown big babys lol i take one or 2 out at a time i try to encourage digging and all diff behaviors they absolutely love it i am in the process of building a large outdoor enclosure just one big one this way i can do my thing in the yard whatever that may be like mowing or weed whacking or if I'm building something whatever it may be however as of right now i do not yet feel comfortable to leave them outside at night without me overnight in fear they will eat something that can kill them but i can atleast during sun light be able to put one of my babys in there and not be stuck within eye sight distance!!! Any thoughts,

Would keeping their enclosure near a window with natural light help? (As long as it is not getting too hot). My snakes are in the basement, but there are partial windows so natural light does come through but it doesn't get very hot.

On nice days you could take them outside for supervised enritchment
