A solid performer. Very stable after warm-up and even suitable for quality RTTY
reception. The AVC release time is a bit long. The somewhat ugly carry handle may
be swivelled down to angle the receiver, or swung up over the top of the receiver.

The flaw with the R1000 is on ssb usb is it is off frequency by 1kz so if you want to listen to 8176 usb you would need to be on 8177

When I bought mine back in 1989 I thought something was wrong with it. Tuning MW with it when I brought it home sounded almost "dead". Took the radio & schematic diagram to the basement work bench. Studied the diagram and found the problem. A factory design. A resistor that attenuated the signal path on MW! Fixed that real quick with no overload on strong stations, nor any harmonic "bleed through" on the rest of the frequency coverage. Why they did that.......I have no idea!

+service1956 I could never understand why kenwood attenuated MW, especially with the 60 db attenuator..
Wish I could do the mod..

Can you send me instructions for the mod? Thanks

@@shoppersplace On the main board, remove R-161 and R-163. Replace R-162 with a jumper.

Ive had tthree or four of these over the years, my latest one ,I bought on EBAY for a stingey £106 inc, postage!! it,s a mint example with hardly any use ,the "silent key " ham must have kept it in it,s box! anyway, I didn,t even have to renew the 12 volt "wheat grain " bulbs, suffice to say, I won,t be selling this one,
the only thing I,ve done as a mod to these is strictly "cosmetic, removing the "handle" to me is a good thing, as I find it "awkward" amongst my bench space, the other "mod" if you can call it that is a spot of white paint on the timer switch, and a "ferrule" around the phones socket, Just personal choice ,
apart from those things, I find no fault at all with this "fabulous old rig," if you see one, that looks smart, "grab it!" with both hands, they are still out there for less than £200.00 and worth every penny, im, listening to "radio cuba"at the moment on mine, on 6 ft of wire!! 570kcs, what more can I say??
    happy dx to all swl,s

Hi David, no air band reception (VHF). Just from 153 kHz to 30.000 kHz. 73, Rudolf Grimm

Look for youtube videos that refer to the Kenwood R-1000. About the antenna depends on the place where you live. House with yard, a single-wire horizontal antenna. Apartment, indoor loops. My sugestion.

I have had one of these for many years and it's a great rig. One little problem is the the "S" meter reads full scale when I power it up and stays that way. I can't figure out why it would do that.

sorry but I am not a technician. You are right though, they are a nice little receiver

Hi , I,ve had a few of these, read my comment above,
it seems to me that your A.G.C.circuit has failed thus letting everything in that should be suppressed?
the meter should respond to the incoming signals and slowly "drop down" on switch on,??
first time i,ve heard of this, in all the years of owning these fabulous old radios,
If you are a member of your local "ham club"ask if anyone can help? otherwise take a "google" at kenwood/trio ,R1000 agc faults,
      good luck, 73,s

It's easy to make the attenuator operate in 10 dB, rather than 20 dB steps. Just google "Kenwood R1000 mods," and you'll find it.
