- A portait of Southwestern Louisana's Balfa Brothers, ambassadors of traditional Cajun music to the world. Filmed in Louisiana between 1978 and 1981, the film focuses on the surviving brother fiddler Dewey Balfa and his efforts to continue playing and performing his family's traditional music after the sudden death of his brothers and bandmembers in a traffic accident. This film is available on DVD from www.aginsky.com...
Will and Rodney were killed in an auto accident coming back from Alexandria LA where they brought their sister up there for a visit; they were half-way back when a tractor trailer attempted to cross over into their lane and jackknifed hitting the small truck that Will was driving; Will and Rodney were killed and the sister was injured critically but survived. After Rodney's death, his son Tony Balfa played with Dewey many times. Will was married to my mothers sister, my Aunt Euna. All are missed very much.
Being From Southwest Louisiana For All Of My Life I Grew Up listening To Dewey Balfa And The Balfa Brothers And Cajun Music With My Dad On The Local Radio Stations And Programs Like Allon Dancer With Jerry Dugas Fror Instance. Cajun Music Is One Of The Most Purest Genres Of Music Known To Mankind. I Always Liked The Music Of Dewey Balfa And The Balfa Brothers Because Like Cajun Music Itself It's A Part Of My Heritage, My Heart, And Soul.
Rest in Peace Mr. Balfa...you music will live on! thank you thank you Merci!
Really enjoyed this. Love from an Acadian in Nova Scotia.
What a beautiful film - the joy amidst the deep sadness of loss accentuates the fact that family and culture can be so sustaining
This is so wonderful, its what Cajun music is all abot
Rodney Balfa was the best cajun songwriter ever.
my best friend growing up is dewey's grandaughter. he'll be missed.
So good -- so blue...
God bless you Dewey and RIP

I'm no expert, but I just watched another cajun video with very very similar lyrics and the song was called "Les barres de la prison". I think that's the title of this song.
Willspires, you were right the first time, it was Douglas Bellard. He went to jail for killing a guy stealing chickens. He also made the song Austin Pitre became famous for, "Les Flammes D'En Fer".

The brothers were on their way to Pittsburgh, for a concert, when the brothers were killed. Dewey played alone that night. Great guy!

Why does it sound like the last lyrics of "Les Barres de la Prison"?
Ma pauvre vieille maman
Elle s'a mis sur ses genoux
Ses deux mains sur la tete en pleurant pour moi
Elle dit, "Mm-mm,
Cher petit garcon Moi,
je vas jamais te revoir.
Toi, t'as ete condamne
Pour la balance de ta vie
Dans les barres de la prison"
J'ai dit, "Chere vieille maman,
Pleure pas pour moi,
Faut tu pries pour ton enfant pour essayer de Sauver son ame,
De les flammes de l'enfer"
Can someone please tell me the name of the song he sings
Jai dit bye à mon pap, et chere tit soeur, et tout mes tit freres, parce que jai parti pour toujour. Moi jai condemné pour la balance de mes jours. Ma chere famille, moi jva jamais vous voir encore.
