I miss all those late night sessions of playing this game- this is THE game that REALLY got me into the "metroidvania" obsession- SOTN had so many firsts for me- I don't think anything can dethrone this game from the top of my list...
Indeed, I personally prefer the DS Vanias and Aria but this game is something magical, what a masterpiece... And it has so much content and secrets, it's insane !
I've played a lot of games in the genre, and there's only 2 I would say dethrones SOTN. Environmental Station Alpha was the first, and it felt more like a tie than a dethrone. Then Hollow Knight. I wasn't even sure about HK on my first playthrough either, but it's grown on me more and more as I replay it. That's saying a lot, because I adore the GBA/DS Castlevanias, but I can't say any of them were as great as SOTN.
@@signa8 Nothing will be better than SOTN, unless you talk about the Metroid's. I haven't given Hollow Knight that much attention but if it out-dues Last Messenger then I'm in.
@@KarcusKorpse There's some really solid things in The Messenger, but I like HK A LOT more. HK doesn't have a hilarious merchant guy, but Messenger also spends a lot of time being linear, and the bosses are a bit easy, where you can face-tank your way past them. They were going for a different game than what I was looking for, and I think they pulled it off, but it didn't resonate with me the same. And I'm completely serious about HK being better than SOTN. I didn't think so at first, and there's still things that SOTN did that I don't think we'll ever see in a game again (shield rod + Alucard shield, amongst them), but after playing through it a few times, the movement in HK is some of the best character control in all the games I've played. Alucard controls like a tank by comparison. Better or not in your book, it still took about 20 years for a solid contender to show up, and that still speaks volumes about how good SOTN is/was. It had 6 great sequels on the GBA/DS, and each had great positives to be happy about, but none of them could quite match what SOTN did before it. Then Konami gave up being a real company.
If you haven't played it yet, Bloodstained Ritual of the Night pays homage to SotN and The Aria/Dawn of Sorrow games in a few ways I enjoyed those 3 Castlevania games a lot, replayed SotN tons of times too. I think Bloodstained does capture some of the charm. I enjoyed it more the second time around, after learning how to play/manage the game better
A faster way is to turn into mist form, float past the first enemy, then go back into normal form between the two. Then cast the soul steal spell and it kills both of them at the same time. You can use the save point to replenish your magic bar if you run low. I got the sword in no time at all with this trick.
He would have been much faster to have used the shield rod, with the Alucard sheild, and just ran through the enemies killing them instantly. He could dash cancel, and tap the shield so the few frames its coming out insta kills. Legit Alucard shield, and shield rod, are broken.
lol nice, my dude. at first I didnt get your infatuation with werebane but i will say: its always cool when a weapon gives you the cool attack of its original wielder, that you so crave. the ability to see an enemy's attack and go "ooo I'd like to do that" and then succeed is a very empowering thing in these games.
I liked to use all the interesting weapons. Fist of tulkas, jewel knuckles, stone sword, heaven sword, shotel, Alucard sword, rapier, the brand swords, marsil, combat knife, mourneblade, gurthang, muramasa, masamune, etc. There was so much stuff in this game; my favorite game.
Nice sword for the collection. My favorite strategy is farming 2 heavens swords from the flying knights in the clock tower. It is the first thing I do on a new run. Drop rate is extremely low though, but once you get it you can run through the entire game with them easily. Also it's helps to change the attack buttons to make them close to each other to easily activate the dual heavens sword special.
@@artemi-music since when? I spent 2 hrs farming 2 Varda rings before taking on the inverted castle. Crisaegrim is the second farming goal after making my way to the inverted library. Neither requires you beat the game first. Not sure what you're on about.

It's been a while, but I found a glitch that makes her just float up and ignore you. What's the Werebane good for? Does this do something interesting beside extra damage to "were" creatures? Been playing since '98 and I've never seen it. LoL :)
it's a misleading description, as it doesn't do extra damage to were-creatures :/ it's one of the stronger weapons that can obtained in the regular castle, useful for bosses like richter

@@danteardy9309 down, then down-forward diagonal, then forward+attack (just try to transition smoothly from down to forward and press attack by the same time you end up pressing forward).
rapier is much better than werebane as the hits are more rapid and can actually carry you from normal to invertted castle until you pick up "val manwe / crissaegrim". Also if you kill the same mob in the church tower, it's way faster to spawn her there each screen, than this room.
how did you test this? with rapier I'm getting +7 atk for normal slash and +15 atk for flurry, but with werebane I get +18 atk for normal and +40 for flurry. both flurries are landing 5 hits with no noticeable difference in speed. I'm testing on the Blades in black marble gallery..

One casaigrimm and ur invincible
Yes, its the Best sword, you will pass the game very fast xD
Don't be stupid. You couldn't get the sword in the early game. Were bane is good sword for normal castle.
I remember accidentally finding this sword and falling in love with it.
Alucard shield is the best with shield rod you can wear it at the start to finish using the x-x thing code or glitch
So... farm hunting girl until you get it?
