Good practice to remove the round disc behind the prop, fishing line gets wrapped around behind there. Peck/pry, and it comes off. Clean it well, soot will be on the back. Side facing you is flat, back side is not. Inspect behind it, clean it, grease it, install with flat side facing prop. You are welcome.

What stainless steel propeller are you using?

I run the OEM one that came with the motor... Mercury Laser II.

I think you just wallered out your retaining washer. I think it should turn with the nut till tight.,, then you tighten till the tabs line up with a notch to bend back into… when you locked the tabs in and then spun the nut you gouged out the flats where the nut seats into the retainer,, better fix that before you lose your prop in the lake.

I actually have done it that way before, but the problem is as your tightening sometimes the tabs dont line up correctly. What I had to do is back off nut to get retaining washer loose, position washer correctly in the groves, re tighten, then finish bending tabs. After that happing a few times, I have always just done as shown in the video for the last 13 years and never had a problem. My Mercury service manual doesn't mention anything specific on either method so I'm assuming they would produce the same result.

Nick, You are absolutely correct. Either he has replaced the nut to a smaller diameter and it dont fit the retainer correctly, or possibly incorrect retainer for that nut size, or it has been wallered out like you stated.

I’m lettin this one ride on it’s own.
I just know I will do it the way I described for my own stuff. If he’s never had a problem then maybe the way he’s doin it is right for him’
