You got that right. Moving a floppy sandbag is in any direction nothing like doing it with a bar/dumbbell. I've got a 'gym rat' buddy that came to HD with me to pick up some Quickcrete and he was gassed in no time loading the bags into the back of my truck.
Hope you're not broke with student debt now! Just wanted to say, a cheap duffel bag with a trash bag liner can get you started. Just don't try to use the straps to lift it, and don't drop it hard or the zipper may burst. Good sandbags are expensive for a reason.
No matter what solution you come to sandbags are probably one of the most fun and functional things you can add to the gym. Especially the ones with handle options.
I have built some heavy sandbags recently. A 50-kg-sandbag is somehow barbaric to lift, as compared to a 50-kg-barbell which is babystuff. The asymetric loads are a good inspiration. Thanks :)
Couldn’t have been a better day for this, just made my own sandbag yesterday (girlfriend actually helped and did majority of the work) but very simple and cheap. Mine ran about for $15 because of the contractor bags (mine are 2mil) but you should be able to get away with trash bags double bagged and duct tape. I already had a duffle bag as well so that helped. Mines currently holding 100 pounds but going to keep it at 70 for the mean time. Make it work.
i use bulgarian bags . but just got in this type of sandbag . bought 120lb 150lb 175 and 225 . what a difference from bar weight. these are killer exercises will try them this weekend
I made sandbag from big gym bag. First I made couple smaller sandbags from polyester bags(use double layer) and closed them with a lot of tape. Smaller ones are around 15kg(33 lbs) and it's possible to put 6 in big bag. Also put one small sandbag in backpack and you can use it for curls, overhead triceps extensions, weighted push ups/ chin ups/ plank etc. It's not perfect, but it will do the job.
Thank you so much for this video!! Been losing my mind in quarantine tying to train at home, but have been following you and BBM content for guidance. I recently ordered a sandbag online because I thought it would be variable and versatile, and it should be in this week. This video could not have come at a better time. Thanks for crushing it and offering so much insight during this tough time.
Thanks for still cranking out the content and useful advice. I wish it didn't take me two weeks to realize heavy sandbags were a good alternative to barbell strength training... Bought me a sandbag and some sand today, can't wait to get at it.
(Y) Luckily I have kettlebells (16 kg and 32 kg) at home, similar exercises can be done with these. Plus of course classical kettlebell exercises too. Also I plan to make one heavier sandbag for my self for squats and overhead press.
This is crazy timing. I went to Lowe’s yesterday and got me two 50lbs bags for 3.85 a piece. But.... if you want to get even cheaper water weight is good also. Tap water filled in a large container
MasonMillevoi Fitness find contractor bags also at Lowe’s or your Home Depot. Then put the sandbags inside so they won’t leak sand everywhere. I wrapped duct tape around them to make sure they were sealed
Great I like the premitive nature of all the workout technique. Thanks Alan for sharing this. I look so raw and all muscle powered. I got a sandbag for 4 dollar, put that in a old backpack, tied additional strips for strength I am good to workout along with you :-D
Sandbag workouts are awesome! I bought a sandbag off Craigslist a few years ago. You can really get a hard, fun workout in with one. Here's some more movements you can do with a sandbag ruclips.net/video/NRqt30FQDck/видео.html If you don't have the same sandbag as in the video you can use a study duffle bag and put sand or rubber mulch in it. You could also buy a lightweight, used punching bag for pretty cheap and use that. You can normally find someone selling they're never used 60lb Everlast heavy bag.
Alan its so cool that you are putting these videos out.....It must really suck being a gym owner and not being able to be there....Ive noticed a lot of rain there in your videos? God bless you and your family....stay strong
This is a time in our lives where we'll see how dedicated everyone really is for the love of weight training. Just bought a few bags of concrete mix and some duct tape to make ghetto sandbags. Went on RUclips to look for some workouts, saw yours, knew was going to be fucking savage. Love your videos man, you're doing the Lord's work.
I got 2 15kg sand bags for cheap and duct taped them together, probably my best bit of home gym equipment as it is pretty compact and the duct tape adds allot of grip even if you have a bit of a sweat. It only cost me roughly £12 to make too so not bank breaking.
@@AspireWu True, but if your using it all the time then you may aswell buy a proper sand bag. It is okay for this kind of situation where you need it once and a while.
Man I love this, never even though about just using a literal sand bag until yesterday, spent my day unloading sand bags for construction. Do you think the lack of handles improves your gripping workout as well?
Hey Alan, do you think you could do a video on how to go heavy on some of these exercises? For example a front squat is much more difficult to position properly when you're doing a challenging weight (say one that you can do for 5 reps or so).
I'm trying to get ready to join the army. (Currently have back issues from work and am therefore super out of shape. Back is getting better though) do you think exercises like these with sandbags would be good preparation for getting in shape for bootcamp? I'm already working on getting my chest-to-floor pushups in order, pullups stronger, and working on jogging and long sprints. Would getting a gym membership and starting a 5x5 or 5x3x1 again be more beneficial? I cant overload myself currently because of the back issues, but one higher intensity thing like this or easing back into weight lifting may be good. (Moms a physical therapist so I can get her guidance on my health progress)
Running, pullups, sit ups, planks, squat thrusts, burpees, running, and running. Once you get to your unit in the operating forces and your body has basically adjusted to the physical workload (unit pt and field ops don't physically break you anymore) you will have a better time getting functionally strong enough to excel without risking injury or creating useless mass that will disappear after a week in the field or on a deployment.
I think often part of back issues is not having enough strength. So avoiding lifting involving your back may do you a disservice. I’m not an expert but rippetoe is and you can search for articles and podcasts where he discusses this. Squats!
If anyone wants to buy rouge style bags, go on alibaba. 200 bucks gets you a full set from 50lb - 250lb. Takes a month to deliver but very cost effective compared to alternative. I bought from Rizhao Feiqing and they are excellent quality, identical to rouge imo.
This is a great workout, thank you for sharing! As a wheelchair user, I'm looking to modify this program. Quick question: What's the weight on the black sand bag?
I think max weight sandbag size will hold 80lbs. I bought a Rogue Feed Sack, which holds a max of 100lbs sand and is less compact than Rogue sandbags. But the Feed Back isn't designed for dropping or dragging.
How do you stay motivated to do workouts? Especially with the virus running about. I've been struggling with motivation for a while now and any little peice of advice would be really appreciated. Also I'm unsure if I should lose weight and then build muscle or the other way round. I'm not trying to "impress" anyone so I dont really care about my physical appearance. I just dont want to be a weak boy child anymore. PS - I love your videos and you are a true inspiration to the fitness world. Stay safe and dont die.
Yo how heavy is your bag? im making one now i gave 72kg of stones but im not too sure weather to make it 54 or 72kg i had a 60kg keg at one point and that was a bastard xD
Just got a Rogue 200lb sandbag and some washed play sand from home depot. Alan, or anyone, y'all know if its ok to put sand in it that is damp? I don't want it to mildew, but I'm jonesing to start doing some reps. Thx folks.
Should have just called this video the following: how to workout like a construction worker. We do this stuff all the time using bags of concrete, bags of gravel, bags of trash, bags of various material, tool bags, and of course sand bags lol. And we do these on the most contorting, uncomfortable, and awkward ways possible. Pushing a loaded wheel barrow uphill is a hell of a workout too
Sissy squats are great for targeting the quads. Just be careful because ankle mobility may be an issue. I like to attach some BFR bands around my quads and even add a tempo.
I went around the woods in my yard and found some rocks and been training with them. I’ve never done strongman type of training and it’s really fun
Angel Duarte after this social distancing is over I will do so
👀
Lol you gonna snap some shit up
Alan, you are a fantastic person and give such amazing, achievable, realistic advice. Thank you.
Overhead pressing a sandbag is extremely humbling.

Its estimated at 30 to 50 percent more challenging than free weights.
Right!
