The examiners always tell you before you are asked to do an emergency stop. I used to be a driving instructor in the UK and when they look around behind them you know you've got about 3 seconds before they yell stop. Always have to remember to do the 6 point check before moving off again as you could fail if you're flustered after having nearly sent the examiner through the window.

Hes checking so much because the UK test is a hundred times more difficult and strict than the US test. Its makes a UK drivers license worth more but it also means that a single missed check or head turn can cost an entire test and all the fees and booking costs.
A missed check will only cause a fail in the UK if it's done in a safety-critical situation (like no checks at all to move lanes) or is so persistent that it shows an unsafe lack of awareness. You won't fail your test for, say, missing a blind spot check during a normal "pull up on left / drive off" situation (given that you still look to see if it's safe in the mirrors).

@@picklelover6576Cylcists, pedestrians, kids, etc. Really you should always be periodically checking your mirrors and blind spots on the road, but especially if you're about to take off. I've had cyclists cut me off when I was about to start driving after a complete stop. If I hadn't checked my blind spot, i'd have hit them. I've also had people cross the street right in front of my car as i'm about to take off.
Thank you! I passed my test a few days ago and recently got a new petrol car. I got stuck at a junction for a little bit trying to pull off with only the clutch. My instructor never taught me the gas method first in a diesel car. Makes much more sense now.

@@PeaceNinja007yeah, a diesel car has plenty of torque at low rpm respect to gas/petrol, if you're on a flat road, the car will move just by releasing the clutch (obviously in 1st gear). It's also much easier to do uphill starts, never used the handbrake in my diesel car. To be honest, diesel engines are beautiful to drive, it's a pity they're no longer sold (here in Italy at least).

You can't even get your license if you don't do it as well as he does during the test, it's a bare minimum. :) Now if he's this quick in an unexpected situation that's impressive, but unfortunately driving school can't teach the real emergency... i failed my first test because when i did this, the passenger seatbelt didn’t lock and the teacher smashed her head in the dashboard. funniest thing i’ve seen my whole life Edit: everyone is asking why I failed so here it is. Where i'm from, you have to verify that the security features (seat belts, air bags, hand brake, etc) all work fine and I never looked at if her seatbelt worked. It was an automatic failure.

She's a teacher it for certain emergency circumstances that you the driver may not be aware of that passengers could be. For example, kids running onto the street or other vehicles that the driver never noticed.

I get it's probably a joke, but if you're unaware they have to say after they're done getting you to do emergency stops. They give warning signs before telling you to stop and you have to stay at or close to the speed limit (even if you're coming up to a turn I believe). In the UK it's perfectly justified to slow down on certain roads or even if you feel unsafe, with this test you can't do that. So people generally think and behave very differently when they know they're going to emergency stop. So students have to be warned before the first stop and after the last one to put them back into normal driving.

@@premquade1056 that would be a fail on your driving exam. It's to show that in the event there is something in front of you (e.g. a child walking on to the road), you can stop efficiently. The driving instructor checks that the area is safe to perform this in the exam. You slam on the brakes first, then you can look in the mirror/blind spots etc. before driving off
What do you mean? it's because he gave it a little of gas before letting go of the clutch? that's normal for older cars and isn't damaging the car, you can also do that to accelerate more or make a burnout. I drive 1996 model car and it won't run without giving it a little bit of gas

@@picklelover6576Cylcists, pedestrians, kids, etc. Really you should always be periodically checking your mirrors and blind spots on the road, but especially if you're about to take off. I've had cyclists cut me off when I was about to start driving after a complete stop. If I hadn't checked my blind spot, i'd have hit them. I've also had people cross the street right in front of my car as i'm about to take off.

I passed my test a few days ago and recently got a new petrol car.
I got stuck at a junction for a little bit trying to pull off with only the clutch. My instructor never taught me the gas method first in a diesel car.
Makes much more sense now.

@@PeaceNinja007 unfortunately so. Don’t worry it becomes second nature. I’d recommend doing it in a diesel as well because the car will be a lot more responsive and quick to set off.
@@PeaceNinja007yeah, a diesel car has plenty of torque at low rpm respect to gas/petrol, if you're on a flat road, the car will move just by releasing the clutch (obviously in 1st gear).
It's also much easier to do uphill starts, never used the handbrake in my diesel car.
To be honest, diesel engines are beautiful to drive, it's a pity they're no longer sold (here in Italy at least).

He was talking to me the whole time, the most seemingly chillest driving instructor you could’ve ever gotten. I was 2 points away from failing though because he marked me off for every time I didn’t look Left then Right when crossing an intersection, even if it was a green light going through. He was very passionate about always looking both ways no matter what kind of intersection because of people who run red lights and kill people. Edit: everyone is asking why I failed so here it is. Where i'm from, you have to verify that the security features (seat belts, air bags, hand brake, etc) all work fine and I never looked at if her seatbelt worked. It was an automatic failure.

It's the car at the rear's responsibility to maintain proper vision, speed and distance to safely emargency stop as well. Unfortunately this is not the reality often times.

I get it's probably a joke, but if you're unaware they have to say after they're done getting you to do emergency stops. They give warning signs before telling you to stop and you have to stay at or close to the speed limit (even if you're coming up to a turn I believe). In the UK it's perfectly justified to slow down on certain roads or even if you feel unsafe, with this test you can't do that.
So people generally think and behave very differently when they know they're going to emergency stop. So students have to be warned before the first stop and after the last one to put them back into normal driving.

The driving instructor checks that the area is safe to perform this in the exam. You slam on the brakes first, then you can look in the mirror/blind spots etc. before driving off
