In 2004, a bored college student named Brad Borne started learning how to create animations in games in Flash, as he quickly brought a character from his notebooks named "Fancy Pants Man" into the digital realm. He began work on a game featuring this protagonist that would eventually become known as The Fancy Pants Adventures: World 1, a 2D platformer that featured completely free-form, hand-drawn levels, something that was really unlike anything that Flash had seen before. The series truly skyrocketed in popularity once Fancy Pants World 2 released, which improved upon the already great first entry in almost every way. The game quickly caught on with a casual audience, many of whom found tons of replay value in simply playing the same levels over and over while trying to optimize their movement as much as possible. Some of these individuals became dedicated enough to play the games over and over again to see how fast they could really go.

Yeah thats funny
I was absolutely obsessed with Fancy Pants as a kid. I used every opportunity to play the first and second part. My sister and I drew our own levels, stories, gameplay scenarios etc. Once my dad took a picture of us holding our "fanarts" and sent them to Brad in an e-mail. And a few days later, he actually responded. He sent us a picture of characters from the game waving and a short message dedicated to us. For a 7 year old it was incredible. I still remember how happy I felt when I saw that drawing. Still one of the best gifts I've received :)
That is so incredibly wholesome
Your dad is an awesome guy
So excited to see speedruns of these games getting some attention! I've been a part of the FPA speedrunning community for a few years; I made the SFPA autosplitter and briefly held the any% and glitchless world records for Fancy Pants 3. These games' communities are criminally small. Hopefully your video can spark some interest.
Oh wow, huge props for contributing to the community by making the sfpa autosplitter! I made all of the individual autosplitters for the Red Ball games, which was a huge improvement for splitting, even though load-removal isn't a necessary thing in those games.
Same, love that/those games
is there a community for flash speed running? a discord or something?
Oh man, it's almost criminal that these games have only been covered a little in speedrunning. Brad Borne was the guy EA contracted to make a Mirror's Edge flash demake! Thanks again for your hard work and everyone who contributed.
True
I had no idea! But talk about a perfect man for the job, Brad earned it
The fact that there are two people and two games, and how the world record holders flipped THREE times in the span of a year as they pushed the games to new levels of optimization is insane.

But seriously, thanks for including me! It's so random to see this after it's been so long. And it's fun to see all the improvements that these proper runners have made 😁

29:39 Super spider skip was actually found by AJcomics, 0/10 unwatchable video smh
No but in all serious this was such an amazing video to watch, perhaps your best one yet. I’ve been watching ever since the sub 20 train video, and you’ve been a huge inspiration to me and I’m sure many others. It’s crazy to think that I’ve gotten to know you better ever since then, and now actually appearing in one of your videos, something that I never would’ve thought was possible. I say this pretty often but the Fancy Pants series really needs more attention, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this putting the series in front of the eyes of many more people. This story is just one of many in the community and there are still many more to come :)
I am so glad that we can shine a light on these incredible games! It was a pleasure working with you on this video :D
Also, I can't believe that dha lied to me....

Between yours and Summoning Salt’s recent video, I find it cool how documenting the history of speedruns plays a part in the history itself
Loved every second of this video! Great work!
Yo thanks PikaJ, been loving your stuff as well! :D
i love this!
This reminds me a lot of the Zelda WR Explained video by Bismuth. A video that has so many new things added that it brings up the quality to a whole new level. The different font, the variety of music choices, the many different narrators, and of course the length, are all things that make me want to create my own videos. You, Bismuth, and Summoning Salt are definitely my biggest inspirations for how to edit any videos that I eventually want to make, and I am so happy that I got recommended your sub 20 train video back in 2020.
Bismuth is so good
also with Shift's videos on bfbb speedrunning
Look into using Google Earth for animated graphics.
It was an honor helping you with the video! This game has so much charm and personality put to these games that it's a shame that it isn't exactly super popular in the speedrunning scene nowadays. It really is awesome to know that I managed to have an impact on this community just by running my favorite flash game series. I really highly recommend running these games if you were a fan of this series or a newcomer in general! It may seem dead for WR possibility but it really is not so. This is exactly the situation when I first joined the community, and look what happened! When I first joined, the record seemed so optimized that I only wanted to see how fast I could go, but I managed to be a contender. I don't doubt there's still more to find in these games too!! Thank you for making this video max, and now I guess it's time to run world 2 again.. :) here's my twitch if anyone wants to watch. www.twitch.tv/luciousnesss

Bitch, please! Your videos are always a treat to watch, Maximum! And they have improved in quality so much ever since Red Ball. I may assume they will only continue to get better in the future. Like, guest appearances? Wild, man!
So glad that somebody covered this. This series of games has my favorite movement of any 2D platformer. You can tell that Borne had spent countless amounts of hours doing small refining and tinkering to make it absolutely perfect. The slide (especially in World 3 and Super) is extremely satisfying. It makes it so fun to jump from high up points and gain as much speed as possible. Animations on Fancy Pants Man himself is animated extremely fluidly which surprisingly enough makes the game feel way more fluid.
This, this has me wearing some $256 dollar pants that look very fancy.

This is the second time that I've seen a video that wouldn't have existed if the person hadn't made a prior video about speedrunning a game. First Summing Salt and now you. You're an example of one of the best, not just speaking to the history of it, but actually contributing to it even with your videos now.

dha will forever be a legend in flash game speedrunning. he was the first person I ever dmed in discord and his 2:35.675 wr in titol is what inspired me to start running way back in 2017. I’ve been keeping one eye on his other runs, especially fancy pants and seeing him get wrs in the series but this video really helped shine a light on how he was able to get them. Fancy pants was my absolute favorite flash game as a kid and when i saw this pop up i knew it was gonna be a banger of a video. Good job man, you made my day
I love what videos like this emphasize about the speedrunning community. It's not just the most optimal runners. It's every person lower on the leaderboards that discovered a new strat that contributes to the perfect run.
That one spider spawning strat being lost to time for like a decade shows how much of a difference something like that can make, when they were formerly shaving off fractions of seconds.
Always looking forward to your videos. You keep improving with every upload. Very impressive
What a blast from the past. I remember thinking as a kid how smooth and fluid the motion felt in this game so it makes sense it is speedrun to this day. wow

Dude your vids just keep getting better and better! Incredibly entertaining, so well edited and narrated.
10/10 video!!
We will see more records in this game. Because, "People who used to break FPA 1.2 records may think that this cannot be done further" and the result: Years later (ie you saw it in this video) that they can break better records. Then, what will happen?
My Opinion: Any person who can think just like a computer can shock the audience with tactics and playing style that no one has ever known or seen. (How can this happen? Only time can tell)
Another absolute banger video Maximum! God I love everything about your content. Thanks again for the awesome speedrunning content ;)
