I met the president of Mali years ago on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was pleasantly surreal like this music and he was also dressed in blue. I stopped by because these guys are performing locally tomorrow and I want to see whazup. I'm learning that I prefer music that creates space for contemplation rather than bringing the walls in on you. Hope the weather is nice tomorrow. Be light and allow freedom.

vieux's story is awesome.... his dad is legendary... his keeper denoted by his father, the also legendary toumani diabate, steered vieux directly down the path that was obviously destined for him. he takes his father's amazing talent and propels it into his own unique blend. watching him play in any live setting is goosebump-inducing.
    thanks for this one KEXP!

Vieux Farka Touré is the son of Ali Farka Touré (makes sense), who incidentally collaborated several times with Toumani Diabaté!

@@mustafajuventino9964 I've always wanted to go, but I am a bit scared of the wildlife admittedly. It's a really diverse and interesting continent though, with an equally storied history which one day I wouldn't mind experiencing first hand, but we'll see when that is. I do agree with your statement about who is in power, it is a shame, but if it's any consolation then know that many countries used to be the same way, it doesn't last forever, the world gets better over time.

If you wanna travel to Africa just do it, a lot of people do, backpacking, cycling, traveling by land cruiser etc
I will also do the same one day, I don't know when but I will 😊

Ive listened this session a lot in the last years. Today I really needed it. I play guitar myself and I know how amazing is this fingerstyle. Its not a style. Its a unique way of holding a guitar and probably holding a pick is a no go (or a oversimplified way) for him. I know this because I'm brazilian and we have our way too. Anyway, this really elaborated and natural way of making music always allows me to just focus and feel after a hard day. Thank you vieux and kexp.

5:30 - the interviewer comments on how mali has been producing great music and musicians recently. please let us not forget how rich the musical culture of Africa (at large) is by putting it in this constraint of 'recently'. This is based on the notion that we only take recorded music seriously in this way. I understand this is not an easy topic to unpack, but it is important to give context and understanding as to why we should stop asking these kinds of questions or making these kinds of statements, and why we should open these spaces to letting storytellers tell their stories.
